@Morpork: CyberConnect 2 has already done two Shippuuden games for the PS2, Narutimate Accel 1 and 2. Both are pretty great.

Since they're jumping to the PS3, they likely want to do something "from the start" that can also be marketed to the English market.

CyberConnect 2 does *great* cel-shading, even their PS2 Naruto games looked pretty unbelievable, especially the "ougi" attack sequences.

Evidently only two of those five pics earlier were ingame, they have great cellshading going on in there, but drawn animation will stick out. Two things one has to give credit to them, good facial animation and clever way to filter textures at distance, gives nice feel to the backgrounds.

Meh, looks the same as the 360 Naruto game to me. Maybe a bit more washed out with the colors.(ie. more faded looking, not as bright)

Not saying the 360 game looked bad, but I dont see why everyone is all over this title like its amazing or something, still looks like another boring ass anime based game.(of which there has never been a good one)

Can't say it looks any different than the Xbox 360 version to my eyes... but then, the Xbox 360 version looked freakin' incredible, so that's okay! And the gameplay was pretty great too---fighting was simple, but interesting, and world-exploration was a really good time.

sorry, thats some inside lingo... but i couldnt help it because that was just that exciting. i was thinking about it at work all night tonight. i have to say, 2008 is looking to get me more excited about games than i have since the demise of the dreamcast. first street fighter IV leading a pack of impressive looking fighting games (kof XII), and then sonic unleashed not looking like more of sonic 2006. now if sega just unveiled a new streets of rage, id quit life and just game for the rest of my days.

like many others, im not even a naruto fan, but the 360 game had me really intrigued, and this one looks even better. besides jet set radio, i cant think of any time where i absolutely loved cel shading, but if more games start looking like this, thats going to change. i cant help but think how cool sf IV would have looked in this style more so than in its own. but oh well, hopefully capcoms sees this and we get sequels to powerstone and rival schools in this style.

Namco Bandai Really know how to do cell shading. This is like their 3rd game or something this gen using it and its only getting better and better.

As with most screenshots vs. video comparisons, the differences between the animation and the game become more apparent. With just the (possibly touched up) screenshots it's almost impossible to tell the difference. However, as soon as the game starts moving, the combination of jaggies and aliasing issues with the texture differences and the odd dynamic shading/lighting changes make it hard not to see the difference. Not that it doesn't look great, but there's still some improvement needed before they can say that the line has disappeared.

These graphics are much more impressive to me than Killzone 2. Its not just throwing as many pixels and bullet effects on the screen as possible, its using advanced shading and coloring techniques to make it look good.

I quit watching Naruto after a few things happened with the plot that turned me off, but I think this trailer is amazing, and that this PS3 Naruto game could end up being really fun.

The thing is, the same thing happened with the Xbox 360 Naruto game. Several months before its release, an amazing trailer is released, promising a fun, polished challenge. What we ended up with was a shiny piece of crap, much like Ubisoft's other kid's games (The entire "Imagine ____z" series on the DS). You know what? I'm not falling for it a second time.

This does NOT look as good as the screen shots from yesterday.

Paused and compared to the "screenshots" it isn't even disputable.

A big thing would be the use of traditional blurs...which were not used in the pics yesterday. In those pics they actually had rendered streaking colors as though they had been traditionally animated that way.

So yeah, I am calling bullshot on those pics yesterday.

That being said, this is still very, very good.

However, its still likely all cuts-cenes. And until I see actual game-play I will hold off judgment on just how good this is actually going to be.

But I have always held the Ultimate Ninja games on the PS2 as the best Naruto games there are. With the 360 version being a second and highly flawed game with awesome graphics and a great city hub element.

The screenshots WERE technically bullshit, but... the actual gameplay footage is a hell of a lot closer than I expected it to be, heh. The most impressive aspect to me is the effects animation. Good models and all but it's been done, just this is slightly better. It's the things like the anime-streak motion blurs and the hand-drawn-looking fire and lightning, etc.

That is the awesomest cellshaded engine ever. I partially bought the 360 naruto game to see how well a current gen cell shaded game could look, and was impressed overall, but some of the lighting looked goofy and a bit blocky. This game seems to be absolutely nailing the shading and outlining seen in the best episodes of the show, I sort of wonder when they'll start making new episodes with one of these engines.

Man, I have sworn not to ever purchase another Ultimate Ninja/Narutimate Hero game after realizing that series of fighting games was going the route of "The anime game we can rehash till doomsday" road that hurts many anime fighters, but then I'm shown this! I'm highly conflicted with my views yet again. I wish that a One Piece or JoJo's Bizarre Adventure fighting game would be announced getting this graphical treatment. As a Naruto fan, and gamer, I’m impressed already.

My jaw is still dropped...it's the little things, like the motion lines/blur when they punch and kick, and the color palette (notice how the backgrounds have that look of the show, where you can tell they were drawn separately from the animated cells?)

No need to mention about dual audio. It is the biggest disservice if this game cannot go dual audio.

The lack of JP audio is automatically minus 20% out of 100%.

I know many, many will agree. Yes, some games voice-overs are great; a la Lost Odyssey. Naruto, as well as all other JP Anime/Movie, games should have the original audio.

Put the BD to use, there is no excuse anymore.

That's gotta be the prettiest cel-shading I've ever seen in a game.

I know it will never happen for the us in the U.S. but, hopefully they'll make a 'Jump Ultimate Stars' for PS3 using this type of cel-shading. I would not hesitate to import THAT!

As for this game... I'll have to wait for reviews before I even consider this game.

@akzidenzgrotesk: The tech being used for SF4 is much more advanced but you would have to understand a few basic things about Cell shading to realize that. Long story short... the details in the silhouette is what you should be focusing on, not the flat color. SF4 has the quality of hand sketched comic book illustrations than the smoother lines found in cell-based animation. If you want to really test a 3D engine, try to get it to do this style:

I recommend you watch Kemonozume. It may be one of the best anime styles you'll ever see :)

I'm not buying into anything until I get confirmation there is dual audio. Remember, Ubisoft almost messed up when they published a Naruto game for the Xbox 360. Luckily, they made up for it as a downloadable content via Xbox Live. In this case, there shouldn't be a downloadable content because of the massive disc space of the blu-ray.

Games will only look better and better given more time. With techniques like cell shading, they get better in iterations... You compare this to Valkyrie Profile and you see that's the case. A year from now we will be talking about how shitty this looks compared to the next thing. I'm happy to see these techs being realized with such richness. Here's to hoping that more things on all platforms will start to experiment with pixel shaders more.

Don't see why they'd pull the screens, some of them were already in gameinformer.

Anyway. It looks great, but the line's still clearly there. The motions are smooth, but they feel somewhat empty to gaze upon.

I must admit, i was amongst the disbelievers when i initially saw the screens, but this looks like it's going to be one darn fine looking game. There's something magical about seeing the style of 2D animation represented in a 3D plane like this, these must be amongst the first truly 'next-gen' visuals i've seen in a game.

People say it looks better than that Xbawks cel shaded game as well, but I look at both em trailers and I see almost the same quality.

Too much radiation on my eyes from staring at the monitor since age 6 I guess.
