In fact, I was thinking of possible story lines..bridging III to IV...what if Vader and Yoda's appearance in Soul Calibur is connected to the stories? Maybe "legend" of the soul blades gives Vader/Anakin that with the blades he can bring back Padme or perhaps restore his complete body and become immortal? What if Yoda is going to try to stop Vader, knowing the soul blades can only corrupt vader more and completely destroy the balance of the force?

It's not canon, so "fanfiction" style stories that make sense are fair game.

But it's not "breaking" the setting. They're not really "in" the setting to begin with. They were just added as fun additions and don't actually interact with the story of the game at all. This was all posted in a blog about the devs defining what makes a guest character and a bonus character different. I look at them like fun easter eggs that aren't hidden. I mean this kinda of stuff happens all the time. Anyone else remeber all the Star Wars references in Mercenaries? Did it break cannon that a bunch of the WMD plans you find are Star Wars nods? I didn't think so, but maybe that's just me.

ARGH. What is with Vader's one-handed lightsaber-slinging?

Not only is canon violated, but his form is all crap! After SC2, all the proper adherence to weapon forms went out the window. That doesn't look like the ominous, determined, and powerful stance Vader took in the movies, it looks like he's just wantonly running around actually TRYING hard, when his mystique was always about his cold and unstoppable air.

I have no serious problem with the canon violation, it's already been done with Link and Spawn and those weren't so bad, but at least be true to the character.

I am not as totally put of by this as I would have thought.

O.k., lightaber/sword issue aside (it must be a magical sword. ok, fine) I am happy to Vader fighting like a man, and not some flying, acrobatic martial artist.

I might be interested in Soul Caliber again if they expanded upon this idea and made it a crazy "East-vs-West" cultural icons kind of thing. Like a more intense Smash Bros. for sci-fi/fantasy nerds.

Just because it's ridiculous doesn't mean it doesn't have canon. They aren't adding new strange characters, they're adding SCI-FI characters into a FANTASY setting; highly recognizable sci-fi characters at that.

It. Is. Promotional. And it 'breaks' canon. Whether it's good for the franchise or not, it is true that it is breaking the setting.

Pirates vs Ninjas? Ridiculous, still makes sense in that universe. Now throw a guy with an M16 in there in an Army fatigue, and tell me that makes the same amount of sense.

I'm not a Starwars fan but Yoda actually looks fun to play as, opposed to Vadar who looks slightly dull (though bad ass).

However if i may, am i the only one who thinks the lighting effects are pretty bad? Why is it in all Japanese fighters, the character models seem to glow unnaturally in the light, almost as if they are made of plastic... Ugh, i hate it!

What I'm in lurv with is how Vader's style fits his armor. Direct, powerful slashes with little unnecessary movement or flourish. It totally fits the restrictions implied by his armor.

In the prequels Anakin's style was full of that shit, but after he lost his limbs and skin he changed his style. Awesome and well thought-out. Star Wars is one of the few franchises /cultural artifacts I've seen the Japanese treat well.

I hated the jumping-bean light saber wielding Yoda of the prequels. I thought it betrayed everything that was genuinely cool about his character from the original movies.

I don't want to see him in Soul calibur, let alone in that cash-in,toy selling, crappy form.

But Soul Calibur has always rocked, so this is a pretty certain purchase for me none the less.

I don't have a PS3, but Vader bothers me a lot less just on the general principle. I would much rather have him in the game personally.

I think all of the weapons in the Soul universe are enchanted. They're all based off of legendary weapons I think. None of that vibroblade nonsense. Just good ol' myth, magic, and lore.

@ArmyofJuan: Tekken changed immensely from its first iteration to its most recent. I would say something more like Tekken 5 = Tekken 3. Tekken 1 and 2 had insane jumping and Tekken 4 had obstacles and elevated stages.

Those who complaining about Star Wars characters being out of place or how lightsabers don't cut through things are forgetting how ridiculous Soul Calibur is in the first place.

Before this Star Wars business, we had knights vs. samurai vs. pirates vs. ninjas vs. vampires. How is that not ridiculous? Toss in combinations of zombie pirates and magical ninjas and evil swords and girls with huge breasts and it gets more ridiculous. And these sharp metal blades doesn't cut anyone in half, so why should lightsabers?

The only bad thing about this is that I won't get Darth Vader on the 360 version. =[

Looks like Vader's light saber does a number on an innocent rock in the video so there must be something special about those swords they're fighting against. Anyway, there's no such thing as Star Wars "canon" because George Lucas fucked that up a long time ago. Besides, Vader's had his ass handed to him by Obi Wan Kenobi AND Luke Skwywalk and there's nothing in Episode IV, V and VI to indicate that he's so special. He just looks cool.

However, it would be nice to play a properly weighted game where finishing the game would open an unlocked Vader that could easily make mincemeat out of his opponents.

Spawn and Link were pretty damn out of place, and at least Vader will appeal to more people than any of the extras from SC2

and i really really wish everyone would stop saying how the lightsabers should cut through everyone and that this isnt canon etc etc. Can't people just have fun with their games now? does everything have to "fit".

@balls187++: just like Tekken 1 = 2 = 3 = 4 = 5 with slight upgrades in between?

Or how about DoA 1=2=3=4?

It's a fighting game. Do you really need change? If i bought/played/enjoyed SC1-3 why would i want anything different from SC4?

The proof that having fun and enjoying scenarios and gameplay is more important than good storylines, plots, or even something that makes sense is right here. I don´t see noone complaning about this matter on this game... and I see no reason why.

Even Smash bros makes more sense since they are in a "toy story" alike world with "trophies figurines battling each other"

But even with everthing I just say, it makes me wonder why Namco did a Star Wars fighting game instead... well, maybe there simply aren´t too many ineresting characters to make one.. (about 10 at max?) and we don´t want another masters of tera kasi or whatever it was it´s name.

Why not just bring them into the game as two Uber killer characters, who are only evenly matched when fighting each other? It might be fun to play as Vader and you're having trouble beating some guy as any other player, but with Vader...yeah, force choke bitch, how ya like me now?

Exactly what I thought.... KOTOR introduced swords that could withstand lightsaber blows so i'll let my imagination wander into the possibilities that the technology survived and was somehow transported into the SC universe.

Now, why their bodies don't just fall apart at the first touch of a lightsaber is another story :D
