If it is still optional when it gets to Europe, I will most likely not install the first time I try it. When I get a new game I have been waiting for,I want to play it the second i pop that disc in, not 1-10 minutes later.

Though, I will use the install the next time, or when I'm done with the first test of the game.

Why is there an option if this is designed specifically for the PS3? The others were developed with the 360 in mind, or so I beleive, and I assumed that lazy / too costly to fix mindsets were the reason the PS3 was laddened with installs. There shouldn't be any reason for this game to have an "optional" install or force 15 second load times on you. It doesn't appear to be pushing the graphical barrier here and it's no MGS or DMC, so I don't get how this is even possible. Sony needs to step in and regulate this crap. Most harddrives are going to be filled within a year or two for any hardcore gamer if this trend continues.

Easiest fix ever. Now those that can wait and have the space go with the install. Those that dont have the space or the paitence pop the disk in and play. Every one wins.

By the way im in love with the way this game looks. Probably one of the coolest looking art styles i've ever seen. Excluding Okami.

Hmm this isn't too hard.. you can jump right into the game right away and deal with the 15 second load times for awhile, then once you're done with that session, install the game and leave your PS3 on for the night. It won't explode like a certain other console anyway if you leave it on while you sleep. There, the best of both worlds. Immediate satisfaction when you want it and fast load times in short order.

Thank god, this is all I really wanted from PS3 games. As ive stated over and over I hate installs, but if they give us the option, all is great.

As someone else mentioned, if the game is great, now we have the option to install it to make the load times better. If its not good, than were not forced to have some worthless pile of crap on the HDD just to play the game if we so get the whim.

That being said, I couldnt care less about load times. Especially in a turn based title. Its the ADD generation that seems to have issues with it.

Loading times had never been a major issue for turn-based strategy games and I don't think that it will pose a major problem for Valkyria Chronicles;
In turn-based strategy games,the audience only had to face a single loading screen for the duration of each level, if a gamer still feels that the loading time is an issue, then he is probably not suited for this genre, turn-based strategy games can truly test a gamers' patience.

I think we're talking about switching out the internal drive with a bigger, laptop drive. I still run my default 60gb, but I took it out and put it back in... because that's the sort of thing that I'm prone to do (don't ask I tinker with everything.) Prices aren't as bad as a lot of people act, but $60 games give me pause for thought among other expenses. I'm not in a hurry to upgrade, and no game should force us to. For better or worse, MS requires games be compatible with the "retard pack" without the hard drive. Sony shipped a 20GB model once upon a time ago. No one should be forced to give up 1/4 of that drive for one game. It's idiotic.

dvd at 32X is 326 mbps but the 360 uses upto only 16X which is 168 mbps. So yea BD isn't that bad per capita read speed but dvd at 16X is faster.

you can get a 500gig HD for less than $150 easily in case anyone think it's too expensive.

I really enjoy the install for Yakuza 3 because it cut the load time to almost nil.

the only reason 360 game doesn't offer it as a support because MS can't approve games that requires an installation, because old 360 doesn't have built in HD.

Interesting, after reading and doing research according to the wizards of wikipedia a X2 BD drive (PS3) transfers at 72 mbps. While a 1X DVD transfers at 1350 kbps which the X360 runs at up to 32X which is roughly 42.1 mbps. If this is true then your comment of zonal recording seems the only possible explanation as to why the BD drive of the ps3 would run slower than a 360 dvd drive unless there is something I am missing. Something strange is afoot......

well, mgs4 uses it a full dual layer up, so it doesn't seem that pointless. Yes BD tracking speed is balls compared to dvd but the extra space is worth it for developers who want to wanna push a system to the limit by expanding the game's assets and length. I like the idea of installs so long as they are optional mainly because people will bitch if they do not include it. I like how the ps3 is blending with the pc to create better games. Especially with mods from UT3 that really offer a lot to the experience.

Really, I think that developers should begin to make installs onto hard drives more prevalent to improve the quality of the game. An install could allow the game to run much smoother and eliminate the need to access repetitive code over again freeing more space on the Blu-Ray disc. I want to see a game that is super epic with hours of play time available (hopefully MGS 4 ;)). But so far I am not really upset at all with installs especially with Valkyria Chronicles lookin so awesome.

Same here. I'm usually only playing 1 or 2 games at a time. Even though I have less than 10GB free on my 60GB drive, I can delete the data and re-install it again when I go to play the game. I already do that with games that have a "mandatory" install.

@freakout: Not that it matters anymore with 16x DVD drives but authoring DVD's used to be a pain in the ass and for example, stuff that was only seldom accessed was thrown towards the center and things that you accessed regularly (menus, interactive content, subtitles) towards the edges.

@chainlink13: No it isn't, BD drives are CLV, every bit of the disk is read at the exact same speed, DVD drives are CAV meaning you read faster at the edge and slow down as you approach the center of the disk.

If you look at the transfer rates of both, BD drives are slightly faster thanks to a higher sustained transfer rate.

It does mean however that you can't organize data the same way as in a DVD drive.

I think its great when developers keep it optional instead of forcing you. Not everyone wants to install their games, not to mention if every game from now on is going to take between 3gb and 5gb of installs, your going to find yourself filling that 40gb pretty fast and lets not get into the fact some people actually bought 20gb models. Of course you can always delete stuff for room but this is console gaming, you really should just be able to slap the disk in and be able to play right off the bat. Still +1 for Sega, they give people who don't care about loading times no required install and people who like to shorten load times the install. Everybody wins!

I wouldn't install on principle. The simplicity of playing a game on a console (put the disc/cart in and away you go) is just so much more gratifying than dicking around freeing up enough space on your HDD, and then having to wait ten minutes while it installs before you can even play your nice new game.

And as every PC gamer knows, installing means sweet dick all for load times. Install or no install every game will always have load times at some point or another and there's no avoiding it. This is just console developers getting lazy and not wanting to bother optimizing their games for disc streaming.

That, and the PS3's slower-than-Grandma Blu-Ray drive forcing their hand. (Nice and quiet though...)

I'm going to do the install. I plan on getting a 300 GB HDD for my PS3 anyways *$179 same price as a 120GB 360 HDD*.

If I can do any of the installs for any games I will do it. Taking the time to do the install is better then having loading times, and is one of the reasons the HDD is there.

When we're revisiting these titles years from now and we only want to play an hour or so, these install times will matter. If you're the type to sell your games when you're done and never look back then I suppose it's not an issue, but I could see it being a problem for me.

Installing the games ain't so bad! Makes the loading times pretty crisp!

And you know, I have a Macbook Pro filled with a half-dozen TV shows to catch up on, and a couple of guitars -- plenty of things to do while the game installs!

More to the point: I really want this game. I'm going to play it with the fury of a hundred hungry screeching hyenas!

I wish there was an online VS mode. Hell, maybe there is. Though either way, I will play For Great Justice.

When I played it at TGS last year my jaw figuratively dropped at how it's, you know, an Actual Game, and not just some pandering anime trash.

That said, even if it were pandering anime trash -- this is the type of anime I like!

And White Knight Story is the kind of anime I love. Man, maybe the Japanese 80s are on a comeback, too.

15 seconds is a long time? I could install but I don't mind load times. Unless the loading will wear out the disc drive. I didn't mind it for every other generation so I'll prolly just wait for the load times. Unless the game loads every 5 seconds. Then I'd have to install.

@Hostile: People can't complain if they get the option. People just need something to hate about so they pick stuff that might just help the game. If people can decide, they're less prone to nitpick.

@NeVeRMoRe666: Video Game Systems have always been computers that were tailored to play games. Installations always let masses of data be used without slowdown. Why not impliment that technology into our current systems? It would kind of be like buying a PC Game and installing it, but then again: Most of the people cannot afford a PC that can run the same game that they can get by just buying a console and the game. It works out longer in the longrun because Developers develop for certain specs whereas PCs are boundless

Have you noticed with the option, people are still picking to install? Hmm... hypocrites (not saying the people that are insalling condemned it before, but look at the majority now.)

Some games SAVE (Yes, your precious saves and screenshots and scores) are huge as hell too.

Not saying the PS3 is bad just that BD seems kind of pointless if you are not going to fill it up, why not use DVDs in the meantime.

@NeVeRMoRe666: The reason why consoles are different is that it's the same system for everyone and games are optomized for them because of that reason. PC games have to take into account any number of things. Consoles also cost far less and tend to require upgrading far less often to play the newest games (read: once per generation rather than once every 2 or so years.)

The fact that we can display we stuff in Home that is saved to our HD kinda worries me with so many games asking for large installs. I see the point of wanting more free space just hoping I can really have all I want to decorate my HOME.

I would install for sure. I've been waiting months since I first saw this as god knows what name on Siliconera, and I'm going to be stuck waiting several more months after it releases in Japan. What difference is another 10-15 minutes.

I guess the days of plug and play gameplay are going the way of the do-do. I just hope they improve load times in games in the future. Or else, what really makes having a console that much different from a PC? If every game is like this, its the same as buying a PC game and installing it. What do you guys think?

I think that's all people wanted: A choice. Now I want to see more developers use cache when a hard drive is a available on the 360 (as oblivion and many other games like crackdown) rather than complaining about Microsoft not allowing them to do an install.

I've been looking through the data from my games and the majority of games save around 2-4gigs of data to the system. Most hide it though.

I'm not surprised to see everyone here saying install. It's easy to bitch and moan about installing a console game, but when it makes load times almost obsolete everyone will be praising them.

I would always take an install over load times any day.

I'd install. A 60GB+ Hard Drive is a lot of space. Plus its upgradeable with cheap 160GB harddrives nowadays. I would install.
