I completely agree. We I was a kid if I did something wrong I would get punished for it, and I would learn my lesson. Now a days I see kids control their parents,kicking and screaming in the mall and the parent almost to tears, and that just makes me sick. In the end as a parent you only try to do what you think is best for your kid, and that alone is a hard thing to do.

I give props for the mother, cause in the end it's best for her kid to learn that doing stupid stunts like that will only backfire in his face and not produce the results that he thinks are right.

You know, the fact that the kid broke the vacuum cleaner reminds me of a thought I had when I was a teenager. One of the fundamental problems of adolescence is that it's an age when an individual has an equal capacity to destroy property or hurt others (with the help of specific tools, mostly) as an adult. On that criteria, they should both act more like adults, and be expected to perform like adults. Because if they aren't, they'll destroy things.

I kind of got the impression that adolescence in this country is actually very messed up compared to other countries. It's nice to see a mom out there who keeps her expectations up when her child fails to reach them the first time.

Fan-freaking-tastic! My mom once took away my NES and I had to try to sneak it at night. She never would have sold it as my folks were of the belief that you do have your own possessions but since the TV was their property, they could restrict my gaming system on their TV.

My only thing is, after seeing the auction that would make me question her a little is that the kid had M rated games like Halo. My folks NEVER let me buy (or bought for me) M Rated games. Granted, I was always more into Mario type games and while mom didn't like Contra at first, she was okay when she thought they were really robots or aliens.

Back in the day if my father did that (Mother died at 10) I would just find my games somewhere hidden, not do the chores and if he screwed that up I would, slash the tires of all his cars, no car no getting to work for that ends meat. Fight him, leave the house for a week no calls no nothing, do a through rampage in the whole house even on his bills & recipts that all parents keep and everything goes back to normal. I keep my games and he ignores me. I went to boot camp to for a whole year, got kicked out(They said I'm disturbed and there was nothing we can do to help him). Not to mention that when I came back I was alot worse, for know I had the strengh to hit harder and go on a heavier rampage. Plus, him doing all this his poor now because 180k was wasted just to change me, I told him before I left the house "Only I can change me, no man can do that, only if there GOD which I doubt". But, he didn't listen, now he's poor and I'm sitting in a 850k home(thats how much its worth now, I brought the house when it was at upper 400k)no kidz just me and all the Ps3 games , accessories (same with xbox360)money can buy. Also, with 20k micro-points. Crazy aint it. HAHAHAHA stupid father, he will die poor and me rich. Love money, hate friends, people, and family.

i'm deadly serious on both counts. Also they shouldn't have mobile/cell phones until they are 16.

Our gen managed without, granted there seemed to be less kiddy fiddlers around then to snatch you after school but, pagers or single number (parents) phones that are of no use to other kids or for useless texts would be one solution.

I personally agree and disagree with the comments. I think there should be a healthy balance between the old and the new ways to parent. Don't beat the square-living shit out of your children, that's just abuse and you'll make your kid hate you rather than love you, though I don't think you should just let your children control you with lukewarm punishment. Spank them, take away what they want, use reverse psychology, etc., but don't spoil your kids, and don't beat them to a pulp. Find a healthy medium.

They work if implemented correctly. The old ways of corporal punishment have gone for a reason. If we continue to adhere to that old thinking it can progress into something far worse later on in development.

Parent's should take responsibility and realize that the best way out is not always the easiest. The government can't do it all for you, it can help but it can't replace the act of responsible parenting.

I agree with the actions taken by the mother, but this kind of behavior can be avoided through careful and strict planning throughout the early stages of childhood. The conditioning must be consistent as you can't chastise the child one day and not the other.

The act of corporal punishment usually tends to bring more satisfaction to the parent than to the child; making the act much more common over time as a means to relieve stress.

But enough about that, those that attribute their well-being to corporal punishment usually don't recall why or how that action has changed their behavior.

It is quite difficult with all the gore and violence on TV...

..but thank god for the ability to block TV channels!

That's exactly what kids need these days. I am so tired of watching as each freshman class entering my university gets worse and worse. It's getting ridiculous. I think it's the cause of immature parents that are too lazy or scared to punish their children.

Hell I'm only 22, but I'm still scared of my mom. I'm 6'6" and she's 5'3". But it's not the size that matters. I respect her. She's a single mother who worked her ass off to raise me and my sister. And if I didn't respect her she would whoop my ass. Period. It sounds so wrong, but kids don't get beat enough these days. It's just a fact. Back when I was a kid my mom would whoop me anywhere and everywhere. House, store, parking lot, etc. They were all included. Especially the store. I remember when I acted up in stores my mom would give me the "look" and say "Wait till we get to the parking lot". Of course I tried to fix things between then and the checkout, but did that work? Hell no. My ass was tore up when I got to the parking lot and the groceries were in the car. God I love my mom.
