We need a test like this for Japanese students (the dictionaries out there are OK, but they lack hyperlinks for words that I don't understand in the definition).

I guess I'm old fashioned, but I always thought the best way to get better at a standardized test was to take available tests, with studying in between. I did that for the SAT, AP exams, Physics GRE (the general exam is a joke; easier than the SAT), and even the horribly unstandard qual exams in my graduate program (admittedly, taking old qual exams is mostly unhelpful). The hardest thing about exams is figuring out what the questions are asking, which is why reading a book is rarely helpful. I've never used flashcards for studying, regardless, so I guess I'm not really the target demographic anyway.

This probably will end up being a lot more popular than other electronic versions they've published in previous years, even though it will end up having less content, almost assuredly. I'm figuring that vocabulary and math would be the highlights of the cart, while there's things that I can't really see working too well (such as comprehension and any kind of essay questions). Still, this would be an effective and relatively inexpensive method of improving at least part of a person's SAT score, and the method of doing so should be more enjoyable, more productive, and less mentally tiring. At least if they produce the cart correctly.

I wonder what good ole' Doc Kawashima over at Tohoku U. is thinking of this? Probably "THIS IS NOT STUDYING!! STUDYING SHOULD NOT BE FUN!!!!"

Screw test prep. The most prep I did was the PSAT and a Kaplan test (both twice- once a year). And nothing else, besides not becoming stupid....

I think the light weight easy to carry portability of the DS will lend it's self quite well to tease kinds of test. For example it's a lot easier to study on the buss with a handhold device than with an open laptop.

@frank0127: in-seat menu? no shit? that'd be insanely wicked. damn seattleans! not sure i'd study using a DS. maybe if it were fully certified and whatnot.. i'd be afraid deviating from the tried-and-true (text, specific PC program) would bite me in the ass. however, can't wait to check out the german DS tutor when it comes out, mostly because it doesn't determine what college i get into.

I took the SAT in october, I regret not practicing as much as I should have, got a 780 on math, 620 verbal

I used Kaplan's Schweser study notes when I was studying for my CFA charter. That would be (would have been) totally sweet to have that stuff in DS form.

i would have used it, if this was out when i was in high school.

and in the long run, i think the DS being used for uses other than gaming (in-seat menu at the Mariners' home games, Map system for Disneyworld) has hit a high point being used for the SATs, of all things.

can't wait to see if this game actually helps people or not. probably will.

That's a pretty good idea, actually. With the popularity of DSes in high schools, it could definitely work - I know I could probably convince my parents to buy me a test prep-related game.

The problem is there are far more appealing things to do with a DS. Namely, play a different game.

It would be useful for the vocabulary prep if nothing else. When I was preparing the GRE (SAT for grad school), for vocab studying, the choice was between a thick, awkward book and a pile of easy-to-lose, awkward flashcards. I definitely would have paid to have that all compacted onto my DS.

I don't see the DS as a strong SAT prep platform. The SAT is pretty heavy study based material. My brother's boy did prep online though. I think he used Boston Test Prep.

What's sad is that all this stuff people are doing with the DS could already have been done on Palm's. The DS really isn't anything new. It's too bad Palm didn't manage to tap into this. They used to be a decent company.
