Yes, games and new media thingies will be bigger.
That's probably why Fox and other established companies who see their potential customerbase dwindling are so keen to put games in a less-than-realistic 'cause of all evil' light.
But hey, luckily 'panta rhei' or something.

StartRunning

No no really. maybe you guys should look at the the graph on SlashFilm.com from a couple weeks ago about the money made from the movie industry in 2007 compared to the game industry.

The game industry is no where near as big and will never be as big as the movie biz.

The whole Halo 3 fiasco was just plain dumb. No good movie came out when Halo 3 came out so they tried to say Halo 3 took people away from seeing the crappy Heartbreak Kid. Not to mention they tried to say the while Halo 3 made this much money on the 1st day thing.

Well when a game cost around 6 times the price of a movie ticket no to mention we can't forget the overpriced Legendary and Special Editions so why wouldn't it make more money?

Halo 3 saw lets say 8 million people while over 70 million people saw Spiderman 3 and thats not counting DVDs, VOD, or downloads.

The game industry is big but no company in the game business will ever be as big as a movie studio and the game industry will never overtake the movie industry. I mean the biggest video game company in the world is mainly a movie and television company.

So in short no GTA 4 will not stop Iron Man from getting anything. People whom were going to see Iron Man will still more than likely go see Iron Man.

GMR2008

I dunno. I think a lot more people watch movies than buy videogames, the only reason that videogames seem like they're competing is that the premier titles cost about 5 to 6 times the price of a movie ticket.

Of course there might be hidden figures, like usually people only need one or two games per household, whereas if a family or group of friends want to go to a movie, EVERYBODY needs a ticket, so maybe it evens out.

DeBurgo

perhaps its because the movie industry can recreate a game's story in an interesting movie form, whereas a movie tends to include elements that don't translate well into videogame gameplay.

they haven't really figured a way to allow you to PLAY something without running, and performing actions on the environment... selecting dialogue is much less entertaining than watching a good actor say it with meaning.

so, ya.. i think thats one of the main reason that the transfer really only goes one way...

because movie games tend to be really shitty. although game movies are often pretty bad too, if you think about it.

but yah, GTAIV is definitely going to be a more momentous occation in my life than any movie of recent times.

i am going to spend indefinitely more time playing it than watching any particular movie.. so ya.. they do have THAT going for them.

joelface

Hollywood counts the opening weekend box-office numbers as one of the ways a movie is "successful".

My whole point was that they are separate mediums, with distinct strengths when those strengths are addressed correctly and with intelligence. I don't see games as being a convergence of mediums, but a separate medium altogether. The interactivity changes things completely. This isn't a knock on linear, structured narratives in film and literature, it's just different, and for the most part, game developers haven't found the key to depth and timelessness in the narrative that film makers and writers have. BioShock, Shadow of the Colossus, and ICO being some of the only anomolies. Of course, there is massive potential, but that won't stop me from watching great films.

SpiralJacobs

Well it all depends on your definition of "bigger". High profile video games have higher gross in the short term, but they tend to have a smaller audience, and are less profitable long term. A game only has to sell 1 million copies to break 50 million gross, but a film would have to sell about 5x more to do the same. So film tends to have a much larger audience still. When it comes down to profits video game profits rapidly diminish after about 6 months where as films get a new life with DVD, then again with cable/tv contracts. Not to mention that each time a new format is released you're likely to get a slight sales boost from the re-release.

jrhawk42

I don't think that any self-resptecting GTAIV fan is not going to see Iron Man but it will have an impact on opening week only in that people may say "I'll wait until the crowds have abated before I go and in the meantime I'll play GTAIV". Hollywood will likely watch with great interest.

A SONY exec at a games conference I went to in the late '90s drew a diagram illustrating the importance of video games compared to other intellectual properties at SONY as a function of income generation. He drew a small circle that was music, a slightley larger circle around that that was movies and television properties and a final much larger circle that represented video games.

mariospants

The difference here is that movie execs blamed Halo 3 AFTER that Ben Stiller movie did poorly, whereas we're hearing that GTA4 is being blamed BEFORE Iron Man underperforms. It may not seem like much, but there is a big difference there.

Cypher19

Halo 3 launched in late September Bashcraft and that 's pretty much a dead period for cinema box-office. The situation with GTA4 is much more interesting because it will be launched as studios start rolling out their summer blockbusters. Iron Man in particular that premieres first, a couple of days after GTA4 should take a pretty big hit. And this type of movies sell about half of their lifetime tickets on opening weekend so its producers have plenty to worry about...
I predict the same thing happening to the "Incredible Hulk" that premieres on, oh well, June 13th.

dionion

In my opinion the only movies that don't suck are sci fi movies and comedy movies (e.g. matrix, austin powers). All the others are getting too predictable. Cleched story lines all the time. At list in video games there's some kind of twist. Which usually ends up in somebody being killed or giant monsters appearing. But at least video games do it in a creative way.

fadecy

Games IMHO are the primary future of entertainment, they are a convergence of all other types of entertainment (acting, music, writing, etc) and they also offer one thing all the other industries cannot offer: interaction.

Do you want to watch Luke Skywalker blow up the Death Star, or do you want to do it yourself? As games mature and the level of interaction between the character and the world increases I can only see films, TV, etc further receding as an entertainment platform. People won't be tuning in for their favourite soap, they'll be joining in. The future is games!

photoboy

The problem is that the EA boss is referring to a film industry that has stagnated, and that has not so much 'run out of stories' as become exceedingly risk-averse. THIS comes about because huge megacorps have consolidated, and the studios have become more about satisfying the profit-with-little-risk masters and shareholders.

So what exactly will the difference be once EA takes over Take Two and every other company? Or when there are only three or four giants in THIS industry? Heck, we're close already in this world of Halo X, FF 4x10^23, etc.
phloog
