@onikuwagata: Actually, the opposite is true. If you check Wikipedia, you'll see that in Japanese the haiku traditionally goes by sounds in the word rather than syllables. The syllabic rule is more of an English thing.

Haikus are eleghantly simple poems... when done correctly. They consist of 17 syllables arranged in 5-7-5. Personally, I don't like half the crap that people post on the internet about poetry, but this Mario one was pretty clever.

@Cchrist: A haiku is a poetic form. The purpose of writing one is to be artful and eloquent, while at the same time adhering to a strict set of rules that governs how the poetry may be written. This affords the poet with a bit of a challenge, and is why non-free verse poetry is often held in higher regard. Haiku isn't the only poetic form, btw...and it's far from the most difficult. There are others that don't get enough credit (try writing a Villanelle...hoo boy!) and some that get too much credit (limericks, sonnets).

As far as Haiku, my personal favorite (The author slips my mind at this time):

Haiku could be described as being "like deer". Seeing as it's a Japanese word and they have no plural forms, the word is always haiku, whether you use it plural or not. Counters or context would probably indicate how many are being discussed.

So while like deer, it doesn't have a plural because of it's origin. Not sure about deer's reason. I think that's just because we English speaking people are fucked up.
