but it doesn't change the music industry (riaa.)

if they cared about the artists they represent or the consumers they sell to,
one would already be able to fill up a media playing device at best buy or fye.

luckily, they've failed miserably at quashing these new formats;
in the process they've loosened their grip over popular music as a whole.

"Nine Lives" is Def Leppard's new single from their album "Songs from the Sparkle Lounge", and it is a collaboration between them and Tim McGraw.

And... um... It's actually already being played on radios and such, and is pretty kicking. You can go ahead and listen to it on Youtube already.

Plus, that's Rick Allen on the right, in the gray shirt, very PRE accident.

It's pretty fascinating the whole Guitar Hero phenomenon. It's really taken a life of it's own, but it looks like this is just the beginning. What with Aerosmith getting it's own Guitar Hero game and now it's rumored that the Beatles and Guns N Roses and slew of other bands want to get in on the act, with their own GH games. It could change how music is marketed to our youth.

@FTANK: Screw you, they've got a shitload of awesome songs in their catalogue: Animal, Rocket, Hysteria, Let's Get Rocked, Heaven Is... all awesome 80's style glam rock. They're a perfect fit for Guitar Hero.

Didn't the earlier news say that Animal was going to be one of the tracks too? I hope they haven't dropped it, I freaking love that song.

Well, its a buck per song on most conventional sites, Most which will rarely see 500K+sale. The Artists/Masters probably gets the same amount of royalty from GH/RB, if not more, but with already 2+million fanbase+quarantined market+locked down source of income=Better survival rate. I mean, didn't GH:Aerosmith say it all?, I would love to see is some hard data on cashflow from that game.

To be slightly more serious than the previous posters, this does represent good news for the video game industry. Like the band or not, they have name recognition. May set a precedent before Metallica gets there new stuff out there.

And personally, I think games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero have huge potential to bring new and old music that gamers may have never heard back into the "mainstream."

The radio playing Rock Band only songs is a good example, and I personally have discovered some incredible music from those two games, Coheed & Cambria as well as Rush being notable examples.

First of all, I'm quite utterly surprised to hear that Def Leppard are still going.

Second of all, I think it's great that video games are now popular enough to be seen as a viable platform to debut new material. (I know Metallica plan to debut the first single off their new album on Rock Band, as well.)

This is pretty cool to hear, though I won't be indulging myself in it (I don't have to funds to constantly buy tracks and buy games :/).

Though, what would be fabulous is if a whole soundtrack debuted for a game, say a "Halo" or something like that. Movies have done that, so you figure it's only a little while until games do.

Video games didn't kill the music industry. The music industry is a dying dinosaur, clinging to it's outdated ways. To continue my obtuse metaphors, the ship is sinking*, and the people are jumping onto anything that might save them, or is making money.
Hence, video games. Video games are making a profit. Crappy bands and delivery systems aren't. Which do you think the musicians want to associate with?

*It's a dinosaur ship, okay? Or just a pretty lame metaphor. But you get my point.
