I can see that a lot of brazilians (including me) are complaining about this fact. But now I wonder, why don't we stand to this outrageous acts?! This country's policy is just going to change when its population starts to do something.
We are not hopeless, for those who believe we are a joke, you should know that we are among the biggest economies in the world.
Don't sit and wait for changes, a government is the reflection of its people.

Freakeeg

You see, this is a democracy since 1985, kinda yesterday. Most of our system remains since dictatorship and this authoritarian way of deciding things without racional thought or research stems from that. Those who hold power don't want to change nothing. So the causes of problems will remain and the actions will be taken upon scapegoats.

That's said, it's widely known that while judges, politicians and mass media hate videogames, games will always come as piracy, consoles will always be sold in grey market and one of the best PS2 modchips in the world is Brazilian.

And while Bully is banned, public schools are ruled and tormented by drug dealers and it is not Rockstar the one putting guns in children's hands.

They can ban Bully, Counter-Strike, Mortal Kombat, Carmaggedon, Everquest, Postal. Street (grey) markets are even considered touristic venues and if you will to pay the price, you sure can find the imported original ones. Besides that, there's internet.

I wanted video game companies in Brazil, but yeah, this place is a joke! This ain't no democracy.

We have a fan-club. It's called Hell.

Cris_Spiegel

The problem about Brazil is that people here try to act like "oh, we´re tough, we´re the USA from South America and blah blah blah" when, in reality, most people are stupid, can´t read or write, ignore the facts, etc etc. Just to show how much POWER they have (Oh, I´m so scarred it hurts...) ridiculous shit.

Facts:

- They banned Counter Strike because you could play in a Favela (Slums). There are way more violent ones but they just don´t ban it cause it doesn´t "disrespect our people" (yes I´m being way ironic here).

- They banned Bully because it makes people beat up other children. Ridiculous shit, again, Bully is about teaching the Bullies a lesson and it´s one of the finest games I´ve ever played. Seriously, I HATE LAW people, not all over the world. But all the judges in Brazil are abusing power whores and they have no power at all... lol

lucasreis

I was fully translating an article writen by a gamer female lawyer from the south region (where the game is being banned.)... but it's not going to be taken with proper seriousness anyway .. so I stopped mid-through it... posting just so I don't waste it.

I will continue to play Bully and I pity of those who knock at my door to forbhid me.

Once again I'm perplexed with the lack of enlightment (Culture?) of certain law-enforcers when I read the news regarding the proibition to import, distribute and comercialize the game Bully.

Banning the comercialization of games because of too much violence or any other reasion is the last straw of the absurdity and a proof of stupidity and cultural backwardness.

I'll explain myself better so I don't raise polemic and to not offend anyone.

Eletronic Games (as the original article named Bully.) are both fun and culture forms as books and movies are.

Yes, culture, because there are games that are compared to masterpieces of art, Okami as an example (Game based on a japanese legend that was entirely developed as a painting in movement.) and won countless prizes on the face of this planet (which maybe isn't the same planet this ministerium agent and the judge live in.)

Console or computer games (online or offline, I repeat, as books and movies are CULTURE disseminators and to better illustrate I name Call of Duty and Medal Of Honor, World War II games, but that are above all excelent history lessons.

It can't be left out of this article the wonderful Shadow of the Colossus, which brings an very interessting phylosophical discussion and God of War, an incredible lesson on Greek Mythology.

Bully isn't meant for kids under 16 years old and therefore, shouldn't be sold to under 16 kids, but I have 26 years old want to have the right to continue buying this kind of game, better, any kind of entreteniment (because games are also entreteniment.) I'll certainly keep my 4 year old son from playing bully as much as I don't let him watch Globo or SBT (Brazilian Public TV Channels.) But what I don't accept in any way is someone imposing what I should or shouldn't let MY son to watch. I want my constitucional right to choose what is better to myself, regarding culture and entreteniment to me and my son.

This is keeping people from having access to information, because there's a clear message in this game regarding the dangers of real bulling, that which happens in schools or even in offices.

The ones that should choose what is better for the kids are their own parents and it's outrageous the way that the judiciary has been interfeering in this family relation when they ban games.

Therefore, as I said before, Bully isn't indicated for childrens under 16 and if after 16 someone play this game and walk around mimicing it's behavior, then we should reform the constituition so 16 year olds can't vote for absolute lack of brain development.

I'm terrified from the movie named "Saw", extremelly violent and for me, without any goal other than showing that anyone can play God while judging other people's sins. I admire the fact that they tried to ban Bully but not this movie, if it was a game, would it be banned?

Do in Brazil the idea that games are unlike movies still persists? To the ones that still think like this, I warn you: The videogame industry is quickly becoming as powerful as the movie industry.

Gentleman, we are living in a information society where the new cultural paradigmas vigorate. It's an set back to not admit that virtual reality technologies are here to stay and aren't just children's toys, but a mean to propagate ideas and business which is set to grow more and more.

the rest is here,
[forum.jogos.uol.com.br] .. lol

Ludwig

Another proof on how stupid judges are no Brazil.
Let me remind the viewers that not long ago, Counter Strike and Everquest (which doesn't even have an official brazilian version) were banned based on bullsh*t like that.

No, it was even worse: Counter Strike was banned because of a custom non-official map. No kidding. Judges don't even know what they are judging nowadays.

Again, Bully was yet another game banned by some stupid judge who probably doesn't even know what a Playstation 3 is, or how to turn a computer on.

And this is exactly why this country will never evolve. Stupid people on power are not exceptions, they are the rule.

Oh, I am brazilian and I live on Brazil btw.

Why are things like these happening? Because Brazil still didn't got over it's addiction to follow trends of developed countries.

And now, with all the discussion raised by Fox News, japanese news, and european... brazilian's dumbest self-proclaimed "intellectuals" probably think they have to do something about it too.

But here's how things goes with stuff like these: Bully gets prohibited. The very very rare and few people who actually accepts paying an absurd price (due to taxes - they add up to 60% of the product's original value) for the original games will just go ahead and buy a pirated copy.

And believe me when I say this: It's far easier to buy (not only because of the price) a pirated game here than an original one.

2 blocks from where I live, there's actually a commercial establishment selling pirated copies of Counter Strike, Everquest and Bully.. plus tons others of course.

And I bet I can find tens or more stores that does the same in my neighborhood only.

So, the results of what this judge did is:
- Promoted the game as a whole... because now every gamer will know about it, and want to check why it was banned. You know, it's "cool" among kids to play forbidden stuff;
- Got people who actually bought original products to buy the pirated version - there's no other option and a lame excuse such as the judge said won't make people less eager to play the game. Or maybe, it'll make people want to play it even more;
- Showed how stupid the judge and the people involved in it are;
- Spent time and money on meaningless stuff... time which could be used for something productive (which is something rare in Brazil, I must admit).

Brazil is really hopeless. Judges spend their time on stuff like these while corruption reaches new levels everywhere in our society.

Never in our history corruption and impunity have been so evident in our society. Education is reaching new lows. And judges have the nerve to do stuff like that while ignoring other important issues.

Just some days ago a group of judges absolved another judge that allowed a girl with 15 to 17 years to be held in a male prison for almost a month.
She was raped and abused during the whole time. And the judge who allowed something like this to happen was absolved.

Such is the country were I live. And I'm ashamed of it. And I'm really tired of trying to make it better, to a point that I'm actually trying to move somewhere else.

Bokusatsu_Tenshi

Jesus Christ, stuff like this makes me glad I live in a free country. And dispite the name of the game being 'Bully' you spend a lot of the game fighting bullies, not being one yourself. First of all: it's NOT a children game. So everyone playing it, should be able to understand, that it's fiction.
And second: In progress of the story, you realise, that being a bad bully isn't going to get you anywhere.

In fact, after the first part of the game, I spent most of my time in the town outside of the school. And yes, there is a lot of fighting off bullies and beating people up at the beginning...but as you move on in the story, it becomes less of an issue.

I knew that such violence was present in the game, but the sheer degree to which missions are focused around punching other students seems odd and unnecessary.

It's a great game, but it would have been just as easy to make a great game that didn't require you to beat up your peers every other mission.

durango

@TOCATL:
Yeah that´s what I mean. Instead of promoting education, you ban stuff on third world countries (mine.) that are developing (so they do illegal stuff all the time, specially pirating stuff, like all the first world´s ones did.) instead of caring for the real needs.

But I know what´s going on. Politicians here are too damn well lazy. If someone complain about something they will choose the easier route to satisfy the dumb masses since it´s easier to educate them.

But I don´t see them burning books with "offensive content".

But thing is, like I usually say, why do people ban games, not guns, ban books about violance but are not deporting violent people to a isolated island, (lol) and such stuff? Why they take measures to control wrongdoing (as they claim) by banning the wrongdiong themselves instead of the "content about wrongdoing"? I don´t want my child to be ignorant and dumb, and at thie rate, he´ll grow up like a fucking retard if I let the world´s government banning everthing that´s suppoused to be "a threat to order".

I guess that that´s what being inteligent means. A threat to politicians.

Wyld
