wow everything that you just explained is happening to me evrytime I try to play COD4... and on other games it won't even let me start some of them.
I don't know what it is but I called sony and they said that they will replace my ps3 since I'm still under warrenty but just knowing that they are unaware of the problem seems to be a problem...
if you got your system working let me know because I sure do miss playing

It just happened to me. Here's the blow by blow account (yawn):

playing online COD4, sound goes, mission completes, challenge completed data arrives on cue etc. Then black screen. Nada. Apart from a repeating ticking noise and none of the usual HDD orange LED flicker. Reboot the PS3. COD4 disk not recognised at all. Reinsert it, then get the dreaded 80010514 code after the PS3 jingle. The ticking noise continues...

Whilst moving the PS3 around the disk did start to load but stalled. Tried other games but nothing. Seems to be HDD or disk problem.

So, hit the web, found this, now resetting to factory settings as we speak, 3 hours estimated time to reformat.

Unfortunately this is all far too reminiscent of my first PS2v1 disk unit shaking itself to bits half way through GTA San Andreas and destroying the disk in the process.

The worst thing is: no way to buy a temp PS3 replacement tomorrow, May 1st :( ?!?!?!?

And finally - the PS3 in question is not even 2 months old yet...

This is the reason why I hate Sony. Whenever they rush a system out and it craps out, they always deny they know of any problem. It happened with my first Playstation, and again with the PS2 and the 'blue disc error'. Man, why don't they just cop to it and offer to fix it like Microsoft or Nintendo? Instead they try to make the consumer seem like an idiot, like they're at fault. That's why Sony will never get another dollar of my money.

I have two 360's and a PS3. I did have one RRoD on my launch box, but it was my fault for deciding to put it inside my entertainment center. After it had worked flawlessly for almost two years out in the open; it ringed out on the 2nd or 3rd time I used it in the entertainment center. I've never had any problems with my PS3, but then I've only gamed on it for about 15 minutes total.

Listen, either a lot of you aren't programmers or just suck at programming. When developing software, most languages and frameworks allow for exception handling. Anything out of the ordinary can set off the exception. That doesn't necessarily mean the programmer knows what went wrong. It takes additional code to isolate that. 80010514 could be the general exception code for all we know. In other words, it doesn't have to mean anything specific and known went wrong.

I'm reliably informed that this is a general error code which basically means the PS3 is having trouble starting and doesn't have enough info to tell you what's going on. Anything from a network drive which it can't talk to, to a corrupted MBR, I guess.

@Raziel Dune: If have an 360 and a PS3 and the 360 has never had problems but I got this strange message the other day. Me and my friend actually laughed about it because it was so ridiculous that the holy PS3 that couldn't break down did and did so actually before the 360!

Heh, just read over the Team Xbox version: "It seems this error is associated with a malfunction of the Blu-ray Disc drive, which wouldn't come as a surprise considering this next-gen optical disc technology is relatively new and it is still being developed and improved."

They probably came up with this after a few (3-5 on one HD site I frequent) people reported having problems playing discs after the last firmware update.

This happened to me last year, and I did none of what was suggested in that article. I did have to turn off the system manually through the backswitch, and that was it.

It was in fact a lost Wifi signal issue as I remember. I lost the connection on my laptop, but the firmware download wasn't interrupted. Needless to say, it caused a bit of a problem.

After the re-start, the system prompted another firmware upgrade and that was the end of it.

How knowledgable Sony PR is about the issue, all depends on how serious the issue actually is. The error code exists, they simply assigned it a number instead of a name.

If this issue occurs, and occurs in even a modest fashion, Sony PR very likely have a pre-canned response to it. If this is just Teamxbox going off, then possibly not. Either way, the issue seems to possibly be big enough to deserve mainstream attention. We'll see where it goes from here.

I've definately heard murmurings of Sony disc drive failures. We'll see how it plays out.

This error is very rare as I fequently check offical PS forums to check what goes on. As of now I may have seen maybe a couple of posts about this. Though it is not a problem that is actully well known to the users who own this sytem and certianly is not a problem that actully is even common at all.

Just a small problem being blown out of proportion, specially with GTAIV, and MGS4 coming out. Giving the fact that MGS4 is getting is own bundle with MGS4.

Sounds about the equivilant of Rockstar, EA or Ubisoft shipping a buggy game and claiming they had no clue.

They most definately know its there, they're just hoping that it won't create a big enough problem to bite them in the ass hard enough.

Either way, time will tell how much of an issue it is. At least Sony were smart enough not to program in such an obvious error sign.

1) Set router to "open" and not shared for WEP, if you are using wireless.

2) Upgrade your router firmware.

3) Get new ethernet cable, if you are using one.

finally a mention of this. this happened to my friend's ps3 and he had to ship it back to sony, in exchange for another ps3. theres another suggestion that it has something to do with the blu ray laser, as regular dvds and ps2 games are still playable, but blu ray dvds and ps3 games arent(not for a long time anyway) after the error code appears

Almost every device with flashable firmware can end up screwed up if stopped halfway through a flash.

You keep your fingers crossed when doing it, but it'll happen to a PS3, 360, Wii, TV receiver, DVD/Blu-Ray player, PSP, cel phone, MP3 player, PDA, personal computer (and most parts within)... you know. Things with writable chips, which is everything now that they're so cheap.

I caught an article over at PS3.QJ.net about this same issue, and here's something it said:

"This news comes directly from a Sony Computer Entertainment UK spokesperson. He said, 'I've spoken to our Customer Services department and they aren't aware of this issue with the PS3.'"

Customer Service doesn't know what it is. What does that tell you? It tells you that this issue is so rare that it almost never gets reported.

What else does that tell you? That the right people haven't been asked. Let's wait until we get a comment from the actual engineers over at Sony before we blow this thing out of proportion.

It's possibly just a bad install. It happens on Windows a lot. You install it, and for whatever reason something didn't copy well enough.

From what I've seen so far, a powerdown restart fixes it for most people.

This sounds completely ridiculous. Looking at the dates of posting this, Team X-Box seems to be the first ones to report on this. Almost everyone else linked to them, or they were linking to someone who they themselves are linking to Team X-Box.

It looks like it's a hoax. Sony's gaining momentum, and people are not just making jokes about how it's a failure anymore. People actually want one, and are excited about the games. And I think this is someone's idiotic attempt to make an isolated incident into something of an analog for Microsoft's epic failure rates.

They (being Team X-Box) are likely trying to put the breaks on Sony's new found buzz.

I think I've gotten this before. It was an error while trying to connect to the network and a power cycle cleared it. I said I think because it could have been any error that started with an 8. But I think this is definitely being blown out of proportion

From what I hear from forums, it's not related to the hard drive since the thing that stops working is the BLURAY DRIVE.

If Sony doesn't know what the error codes mean who put them in there? Did someone misplace the service manual??

If you visit the top hits and see the threads only like 4 or 5 people in those threads have had this error, so it's not widespread at all. Again from my observation, almost all of them were playing COD4 at the time. A strange coincidence I say

Hmmm my friend had one odd error in which he called Sony for support but there was no solution, but to return the PS3 for a new one. Something happened with the OS system locking up on him after he decided to reformat the HDD. Probably this is one of those OS problems??

I know 7 people with PS3s, not a single one has mentioned a problem. Although I do not know anyone who has a 20/40/80Gig PS3. I'd like to know if this is an issue with new models.

I'm lucky, launch 360 no RROD, but I did have a faulty launch PS3. It had a bad AV output. Second PS3 is going strong, but doesn't get that much use. My situation is very backwards compared to most. I hope this error code isn't contagious.

Can't wait to see this turn into a flaming post with hundreds of comments.

This is a disc read error that very few people are experiencing. There seems to be links between people getting this and updating firmware so it may not be completely harware base

From my own observations, I see that many of the people who reported this did so because they tried playing COD4. Maybe just a coincidence

This story originated from a TEAM XBOX article. They started a story about PS3's suffering massive failures and that SONY is trying to cover up. Gamerevolver is simply posting up a copy of the supposed news, and now Kotaku....

Team Xbox creates a story with no evidence and the blogs follow suit....
