I think the stunning part about the numbers being this high is that this is the 2nd week of such a disparity. One week of a system getting a major surge is okay, with a tapering off over the subsequent weeks. This is two straight weeks of having over double the second-place system and nearly as much as the other 5 systems combined. I'm seriously stunned.

On a lighter and slightly weirder note: I'm sure some of you added up the non-PSP numbers. Has anyone noticed the DS+Wii+PS3 total?

55190 + 44618 + 11303 =...

111,111.

I just had to blink at that. Repeatedly.

It's interesting to see a console pick up speed so late in it's release. Good for Sony though. The PSP seems to be a pretty solid piece of equipment, even if it's not to my taste exactly. Maybe they can use these killer sales to lower the PS3 price so I can get one?

@ksins5: Status quo recently was pretty much a three-way draw between DS, PSP, and Wii. The differences between them were insignificant - a couple thousand here, couple thousand there - and PSP wasn't always on top.

Personally though, I think after such a big release raises the profile of the system, PSP's 'status quo' might be permanently lifted. Let's see.

Wii isn't competing against PSP anyway, I'm sure Nintendo are happy there with their 4:1 lead over PS3. But as for DS, I wonder if PSP comeback vs DS means DS2 might be a little closer? Or more realistically, maybe some new colours...

@ksins5:What? No, the PSP lifetime sales do no outstrip the Wii or the DS. Where have you been? @Passa:If you hate grinding, then Monster Hunter will never be your game. Most people who hate Monster Hunter are also not fans of FFXI. @Losbullitt:It..is..a..sales..spike. That's it and will last for about 2 months or so. @zanzibarlegend:Incorrect. When done right (Strikers, Mario Kart), the Wii can play online just fine. The biggest issues is poor network code and people who have improperly set up routers. I do agree Brawl is a game that needed it's own servers, it just has too many people playing it. @BlackDove:New games with Monster Hunter's level of following can have a month or longer's sales spike. Thing is, this results in monthly sales being even lower after the spike is over, due to the fact that people already have the system.

Yes, good games are important.

But I got PSP first then became seriously interested in PS3 and got one of those, too. I wonder if people in Japan will feel this way now that there is even more connectivity between the two devices. Some of the remote play features are actually pretty impressive, if not entirely gaming related.

@Nate_Birch: Yes, they ARE good. Most reviewers don't spend enough time to actually understand how the game is played, or already has a preconceived notion on how the game is "supposed to" play.

Also, it's not just "dinosaurs", it's dragons and other big beasts.

MH is really more about acquiring/creating big loot/armor/weapons while fighting big enemies.

I dont think the console really matters. The fact that it sold this much on the PSP and pushed PSP sales shows that monster hunter will sell extremely well regardless of platform.

I got a kick out of the "OMG PSP DOMINATION" posts. Once monster hunter fever dies down the PSP will be back to status quo.
