I'm sort of sitting here pondering the current status of video games, and I've come to a conclusion: They're too damn expensive.

Games used to take 6 months to develop, a console never cost more than $200, and you could be sure your NES wouldn't overheat or have disc-errors.

It's becoming harder and harder to become an obsessive gamer when it takes 2 year cycles to wait for your favorite franchises to spit out another generic sequel of your favorite series, pay $50-60 for it, and the game still has most of the things that were wrong with it in the previous entry to the franchise.

It's becoming increasingly difficult to spend hundreds of dollars each month this year because of high profile games that are sadly still flawed in some aspect or another, when you expect better for your $60. When you expect to sit there longer than 5 hours to play it (I'm looking at you, high-budget mess Heavenly Sword).

Ye olde NES, SNES, and Sega Genesis games. I look back, and I realize, that you could play those games for hours and hours on end, for days, for months, even years, and never grow tired. Always needed the next high score. Always wanted to hook up the second controller to play with a friend.

Perhaps its that now we've all grown older and our criticism for games has grown as well, but I remember a time before it was all about online gameplay, framerates, "waggle", and hard drives. Where you simply played a game, played it a whole lot, and it never grew old. That, and the games never cost more than $30 brand spanking new.

Some games nowadays seem to be losing their incentive to let you have a good time, and rather, are trying to tell a mediocre story like some sort of drab old diary novel from the 1700s. Storylines and plots are great, but too often do they replace the fun factor.

I don't know, I'm simply finding it harder and harder as I grow older to play video games with the same passion as I did before.

I find myself paying hundreds of dollars for games and consoles that I end up never touching again or trading-in. Games that take 3-4 years to make, last a fraction of the time my old games used to, and cost double as much.

I find myself buying maybe a couple of games every few months, instead of before where I would just go on a spree at the store. It's almost like a gamble now, it's like gaming is an investment. Not simply a pastime. We look at reviews, impressions, details to see if a game is worth $60, while before I wouldn't give second thought to buying a game I thought looked interesting. But now, it's as if I need to be careful where I spend my money.

Due to this, companies are playing it safe and just rehashing sequels of their popular series over and over, like Final Fantasy and Mario Kart. They're successful, so they don't change them, and they keep selling them. Creating something new is too much of a risk, as I said, because it has the risk of failing. In an age where a game needs to sell over 1 million consoles to turn a profit, gaming is becoming a constricting gamble all the more often. If anyone saw the reception of No More Heroes in Japan, it was quite disappointing. Same with Okami. Same with Zak and Wiki. The era of new, fresh ideas seems to be diminishing as it becomes too dangerous of a ground to tread upon.

Has gaming truly reached a plateau among hardcore gamers? I shudder to think so...but perhaps..

As for the luck element in the fights guess what it's a common flaw in games involving powerups. Invicibility when there isn't any enemy around for 15-25 seconds and the power up fades away in only five seconds of being granted.

Especially the overworld. I still dislike the fact that a "next gen" system has a game where you're riding along on an overworld when a fence suddenly pops up two feet away from you and sends you flying face first into the ground. This should NOT happen. Shoot, it barely happened in the days of the PS1 and N64 era. Grrr.

Two weeks? It only took me fourteen hours to beat the game twice and get all the bonus stuff such as the cards, all the clothing.

Heck the final boss and the locations of one or two items in the ground as well as in the dumpsters is what delayed everything.

You just suck at the fighting. Plus a lot of people like the little touches on the job minigames. You know the whistling when he picks a coconut as well as how he waddles while carrying it.

The kill gigs were usually over in three minutes and if you were any decent you got enough money for a shirt or if you saved up you got the next boss fight by doing a job then a kill mission maybe a free fight.

If I hadn't gone for all the clothing to pimp Travis out I would have finished the first play through of the game in three hours.

Now bite into it and brace yourself for orgasm.

The only flaw Branston pickle has is that it ONLY goes with cheese. Sure you can put other stuff in with the cheese but if there's no cheese in there at all it just feels wrong.

You really have to just play it to find out.

My only gripe with this game is the overworld. It is absolutely horrible, but if you think of it as just a hub and not an open world environment, the pain goes away!

The game was hardly pretentious. The story was highly unrealistic and the only real satire was the slight jab at Western otaku. It's got style, yes, but beyond that, what does it have? Some neat boss fights, and...well, I can't really think of anything else good.

As for why I don't like it, well, it's the chores. Yes, chores. From the moment I started punching on a tree to get some coconuts, I wasn't too ecstatic. Before I knew it, I was freaking mowing grass. Reapeatedly, just to make enough money to fight another person in the game slightly worth a damn.

Sure, there are bounties too, but that brings up another point. Would it have been so hard to get some sort of variety into the mindless people you kill over and over again? You have like...I don't know, 5 or so different enemies, with each looking essentially the same except for what weapon they're holding, until you get to a new boss area, where their skin is replaced so that the Guys A-F that were guards are now freaking baseball players.

The combat, to me, was repetitive and boring, except in the times I got an interesting slot ability, which wasn't often enough to keep me interested. Even the boss fights felt like a long ass quiz on how you fight. Dodge, dodge, dodge, attack during the opening in their defense. Repeat 80 times until they die, and enjoy the one interesting bit in the game, the cinematics.

Personally, I ended up stopping playing after Destroyman, and sold it to a friend. If I want to pick up garbarge and mow lawns, I'll do it where I can actually make money, and don't have to use nasty controls doing so.

As a side note, I am very against selling/trading in my games. With No More Heros, I was hesitant, for about...30 seconds, before putting it in the case and handing it over. I can get more enjoyment out of it by watching a playthrough on YouTube.

The fighting was fun as hell, and the story was really quirky and fun, but everything else ruined it for me.
