Basically they've developed a whole back story of some SciFI war and have a complete offering of over one hundred ships that they'd like more to do with than is possible in a simple side-scrolling shmup.

I wouldn't be surprised to see an Eve Online knock-off MMO. I'd pay $15/month for that.

Maybe the clash with my expectations was too severe. Might try the demo again some time.
Btw, there is a manual attached to the demo :P . It's only that it's too brief - 2 pages, one being a poster.

Much, much, much better then Field Commander.
And, yes there were limited instructions under the main menu.
