Aside from bouts of color swapping and mismatching of parts of one autobot onto another (IE Bumblebee's head on Jazz's body, or something similar) and instances where multiple copies of the same 'bot on screen at once, the story's are sort of lame compared to modern cartoons. Samething happens with the original TMNT and the new show. The new show has the turtles actually fighting, with several episodes where they do cut apart very much organic beings. So some cartoon gore, as opposed to Mikey throwing pizza boxes or something.

Start with the latest show, Transformers Animated, it's actually pretty modern but it still feels like Transformers. Plus the characters are as hilarious as all hell, especially Blitzwing. Anything that guy does or says is comedy gold.

When my cousin's who are 3 and 6 come over now I usually break out a dvd and we watch a few episodes (since they can't sit still for any longer).

Transformers is a funny thing. I liked it when I was 10 or 11, but at the same time I knew it was pretty lame. Same for GI Joe, except for that one arc with Destro about the weird chemicals in vats.

My situation is funny because I watched Starblazers when I was about 4 years old or so. That pretty muched ruined American cartoons for me for the rest of my life. Nothing compared to Starblazers(Yamato) and it's still awesome today, even with the cuts/sanitization.

I remember once my granddad came over and saw I was watching Scooby Doo. I was 5 or 6. He asked me if I liked it. I replied "Not really". He asked why. I explained that it was pretty much the same episode over and over (much like that Wayne's World joke) that always ended the same. He just nodded.

I wanted to ask a question of you old TV watchers. Does anybody remember a Power Rangers-like live action Japanese show about these people that could turn into rockets? The main guys were silver and gold, and they lived inside a volcano with a wise old man? They also had a little japanese kid that they would help and he sometimes rode inside of them as they flew off to fight evil (or whatever the hell it is that they did)? They showed it in Georgia in the late 70's or early 80's. Either on TBS or channel 46.

I remember loving that show but can't remember what it was called for the life of me.

It really shows how the cartoons of the 80's were created to sell toys and nothing else. Transformers the Movie holds a spot in my heart because of nostalgia and passable animation.

The newer cartoons are MUCH more sophisticated. I watched some of the new Transformers cartoons, and you can tell that there was a definite attempt to make them watchable by kids and adults feeling the nostalgia.

Cultural references aside... they try to give the characters a certain amount of depth. The plots are better written and there is definite character development.

The show that stands out is the now dated Beast Wars series. While CGI is dated... its holds up well today because of the overall plot, depth in characters, and interactions between the characters themselves.

So for the most part: dump the cartoons of the 80's... and really WATCH some of the new stuff is out with your kids. Some of it is much more sophisticated then you might think.

Most kids really don't even notice that they changed their minds about a previous plot-point mid-series. As an adult, though, especially with the older cartoons, you'll notice that it's a giant Hasbro ad in disguise. I'd say to buy one of the more recent series re-boots. The cultural references will be easier to understand and there aren't a lot of retcons to deal with. Also, most of the new reboots were made in Japan, so it's a naturla fit. Explain to your son that there are many different versions of the Transformers stories and that he'd only get confused trying to associate any of the cartoon series with the live-action movie. The only thing they have in common is characters and the basic plot of, "Decepticons are bad, Autobots are good." No big loss not "catching up" on the original. Look up Transformers on Wikipedia for some clarifications on what I've mentioned already.

Others like "Carnage in C-Minor", "Child's Play", and "Megatron's Master Plan" suck high amounts of suckage.

But if you consider the advertising nature of the cartoon (and the movie, while being awesome itself, is a cleaning out of the old toys to make room for some of the new, suckier ones), it holds up well.

You REALLY should be getting into RGB and Space Battleship Yamato, though - quality fun for the whole family! Well, at least one of them is.

Transformers DOES hold up, if you take it for what it is. So do just about all of the Disney toon series, He-Man and She-Ra, Thundercats, Johnny Quest, and TMNT. Shows that disappoint after growing up are G.I. Joe, Jem, and Thundar: the Barbarian.
Mini-Bash will love the original TF series. He's too young to get that the art sucks by today's standards. Enjoy watching it again with your son. The same way I introduced my daughter to She-Ra. I got to re-live a great show from my childhood, and she loves it, too.

But you can't beat the fact that although the Autobots can randomly fly throughout the series, there are several "hanging from the edge of cliff about to die" moments that are hilarious.

And just about every episode ends with "That should be the last we hear of Megatron".

The first half of the movie holds up pretty well, but you can see a slight degradation of the animation and art quality towards the latter half of the film.

For MiniB, however, I don't think it'll be a problem. But don't show him the movie....as others have stated, My childhood was not ready for Optimus' death. That alone should have garnered the movie a mature rating.

You know what holds up incredibly well? Merrie Melodies and old school Looney Toons. They never get old. Don't know if you have easy access to that stuff, but it will always be gold in my mind.

There's definitely some piss poor animation in some ep's and dammit if they could ever color Starscream, Thundercracker and the other jet guy correctly with consistency.

Before watching it again, I kinda remember coming away with a strange feeling as a kid, how strange Optimus Prime was, and how inconsistent, and practically incompetent a leader he was. I never really understood why, until I watched it again. Strange stuff indeed.

One of my favorite episodes had to be late in the series when Cyclonis puts Galvatron in a galactic mental institution. Just hilarious. Especially when Galvatron builds a gun in crafts class and starts shooting everyone and everything in sight.

As an adult, G.I. Joe holds up much better than TF, despite what everyone says.

Also, gotta say as screwy as TF is, it's the kinda of experience that can really inspire a kid's imagination and open up realms of possibilities. And that's something you won't get from most kid's shows today.

While there are a few stand-out episodes because of character development or animation, the majority of them are pretty bad and inconsistent. These are, of course, only through the passage of time and comparison to today's cartoons, such as Justice League Unlimited.

For kids, these are pretty good time filler.

I recently saw a few episodes of the more recent transformers, and to me, it seems as though they rely so much on high tech animation and a lot of glitz, that what Transformers are about get lost in the confusion.

Let's call it for what it was: a way to sell toys. If memory of begging and pleading for advances in allowance serves me correctly, it did its job. What a brilliant way to double-dip: cartoon advertising dollars and free advertisements for your toys.

Anyway, adding another to the list that doesn't hold up: Voltron. I was a freak for Voltron when I was a kid. I had the transforming bigwheel. I had the talking sword. My first crush on an animated character was Princess Allura. I didn't even skip over the Pidge action figure. Needless to say, my enthusiasm for the DVD releases was unparalleled. Now, after watching volume one... Well, I'll just say "you can't go home again".

I still love Macross, however (There's always room in my heart for a little Zero-G Rove). Oddly enough I can still watch Masters of the Universe as well, regardless of how horrible most of the episodes are.

I remember one episode that took place in Mega Man's universe where they went through all the levels in Mega Man 1. When I was a kid, that was cool as fuck because I was such a huge Mega Man fan anyway. When I watched it again recently, it was like some took an ice pick to my forehead. Mega Man's voice is HORRIBLE! And he's not even blue, they colored him green. The animation looks like crap now, too. I was so disappointed, lol.

5. Be picky with which episodes you watch. Anything with dinobots and the creation of a new transformer is generally good....anything with double-agents and too many humans...probably bad.

I LOVED transformers as a kid and got all excited about the new movie (even liked it fairly well), but when I went back to try to watch season 1 of G1, it was terrible. Grating music and sound effects, lame animation, nonexistent plots, episodes that were all the same. I think maybe they got into some story arcs later that might be more enjoyable.

On the other hand, the animated movie, while super cheesy, does still hold up. See if you can find it!

The classic first series is pretty good still, if a little dated. The second series dips a lot in quality in the first half, then the second half (made after the movie and incorporating the new characters etc.) is really fantastic and sci-fi.

My own kid (who I think is older than mini-Bash at 7) loves any of the episodes with the dinobots in.

Fun trip down memory lane - holds up better than "Jayce & The Wheeled Warriors" but not as well as Robotech.

We as adults have an emotional attachment to the old cartoons so we have intrinsic feelings about them which skews how we see them (we have fond memories of them so we when we watch them we either still love them or think that they are at the very least "OK").

The new Transformers actually has alittle more depth while still being a good show for kids. I'm sure if you had kids and sat down to watch it with them, you would be able to stand it without wanting to beat yourself over the head with a remote.

Some of the animation in Season 2 is ridiculously bad (the episode with the alien kid thinking the Transformers are toys is a great example, as there is about two minutes where the animators forgot to give the kid a body).

I'm a huge Transformers fan, so of course I still like the show. For kids these days (who like the newer TF shows), I don't think it will hold up. The Transformers comics, however, will always hold up (scratch that, The Simon Furman TF comics will always hold up).

I saw a re-run on cartoon network last year i believe, and i was like "i was watching this shit when i was younger...damn, my attention span was something". However, there some cartoons that are were great then and great now. As if they ahead of thier time. One such cartoon was "Thundercats". I still love that cartoon...except snarf! (fat cat motherf$%%^r)

The original Generation 1 cartoon series is the best. I have them all on DVD plus the original movie too - which I think is much better than the 2007 movie, even though the effects are tight.

Megatron tries to take over/steal something.
Prime stops him.
Megatron flies off annoyed.

But its still good fun :)

Especially S2 onwards.

G.I. Joe was very broken, and Voltron repeats the the same 5 scenes per episode at least 3 times.

Just be prepared for very bad animation at times, at very bad editing at another.

Just take it with a grain of salt, laugh at the stuff you never noticed before and enjoy. I do think the Transformer Movie holds up pretty well though.
