I still don't see what the big deal of transfering BR discs to PSP is. Just convenience? Is it actually the high-def video, or will there just be a smaller PSP-ready file in the disc?

After all, what's the point of wasting space in HD video when the PSP screen does not support the resolution, and it would not even play it with the TV out.

Will probably yield the same quality as a DVD rip.

Hugoku

In other words this is a Tivo with BD backup, which is pretty cool and not as expensive as it sounds, How much does an HD Tivo cost? How much does a BD recorder cost?

cduran02

@denki: I think you are making a mistake of thinkig that busting up some hardware modders place is relevant to the EULA,notwithstanding the simple fact that the law in one country is not necessarily the same law in all countries. I'm talking about the so called "EULA", which stands for End User's Licence Agreement, the hardware modding operations are not end users. I, as an end user, can do what I want with my property (It's my propery, no matter what the company might say about "renting" it to me) when owners are ever prosecuted for doing no more than modding their own console you might have a point.

Cruithne

Does anyone else use TivoToGo? All I needed was a WiFi dongle and an extra $15 to get Tivo Desktop software to convert the files. Works for a bunch of formats (PSP, iPod, Zune, mobile) and I love it. Granted you have to fast-forward through commercials but it's a nice choice for those of us with the popular DVR. Warning: Only works on PCs. Apple DRM continues to be shit.

mister_shhh

@Cruithne: It is illegal- in that you're violating the UELA of the PSP when using homebrew. Whether or not it is enforcable is another matter, especially seeing as how the only way Sony could prove anything was if you gave them your PSP with a sticky on it that says "I done modded this and am homebrewz," or something to that effect. Yogarine has a good article on it:

Forgive my ignorance if this is a stupid question, but would a Blu-Ray movie look that much better on a tiny PSP screen that it would warrant taking up that much additional memory? Seems rather...unnecessary.

Even so, at least Sony's going out on a limb to provide extra functionality for its customers.

Captain Impulse

Not really surprised by this. I have a PS3 and it only gets used for remote play so i can watch tv/movies on my PSP.

Played GT Prologue, it was meh, I will wait for the full game.
Played Drakes, it was overhyped
Played ratchet it became boring fast
Played UT3, it just looked .... underwhelming and the poor PSN service just lets it down badly.

So, PS3. Glorified media centre box.

MGS4 - I was put off by the overly gay ass cleavage and cock grabbing in their play through demo.

irnchriz

Anyways, kudos to Sony for their continued striving to add functionality to their products.

Cruithne

If they really want to make the PSP a truly great multi-media machine, all they need to do is update the PSP OS/FW to the point where it can run homebrew without doing anything illegal- and then they've made a very small but capable PC. Think about it- using a 3rd (or first) party keyboard attachment, you could have an on-the-go word processor, or spreadsheet, or, hell....anything. If you have a slim, with the added benefit of video out, you could run a damn presentation off a PSP, if the right software was written. I'd love something like that, so I wouldn't have to lug my laptop around in case of live-blogging or whatnot.

The problem with Sony is that while they will call the PSP something other than just a game machine, they don't -and probably won't- do anything to realize that. They have in their power to make a small, incredibly cheap but reliable and decent computer, which while it can't compete with the big boys, would be perfect for travel or low income families- just plug it into your TV and you're done.

I think with how the PSP and PS3 are handled- like using a rallycar to only do the shopping- Sony is actually trying to lose money. Too bad they are all too single-minded to see that the PSP could usher in a new age of computing.

denki
