Umm..I'm not 100% sure about what it is you're trying to convey, but I sort of get it. Maybe the Xbox is the kids most favorite thing in the whole world, maybe its the most "special" thing he has. You don't know that, so give him a break. He's young. He's 9.

I remember when my younger brother was even younger he use to carry around N64 Cartridges (in particular Super Mario 64 and Bomberman 64 if that makes any difference) everywhere almost like a teddy bear. He would carry it when we go out, to restaurants, absolutely everywhere. Sometimes even near the bath, although he wouldn't put it in of course. The pictures on the cartridges would fade and peel off because he carried around so much. To him, it wasn't so much about the game that he could play with inside (as he was even too young to play the game, he just watched me and my other brother play) but the I dunno, attachment he had to it.

So yea, I can definitly understand why the kid was carrying around his xbox and had it signed by the wrestlers. It was probably a merging of his two most favorite things.

NeVeRMoRe666

@thor79: "a) stop getting a system you play regularly, signed by important people. When you get a system signed retire it. Treat it special like you would treat any treasured signature item. Why is your 360 any different?"

Right. Because people have a couple hundred bucks just lying around under the seat cushions.

"b) stop getting a system signed and get something else signed."

True, though in the case of the Bungie thing, the 360 was very appropriate. Also, the kid likes wrestling, and he likes his 360. So why not?

How is it a mistake to get a 360 signed? A lot of commenters are mentioning that if you use something that gets signed, the signature will naturally become damaged or get worn off.

BUT THIS IS A GAME CONSOLE!

Unless you're Jason Chen, there's no reason you'd have a lot of wear and tear on the outside of your box; it's not a signed baseball or anything. Furthermore, NOBODY KNEW about Microsoft's rumored "drown everything in alcohol" policy, and chances are good that the box was signed before the whole Bungie-B-Gone incident.

So the kid's 360 breaks, and what's he going to do? Of course any rational person would just buy a new box so as not to damage the signatures because they have the loose cash and THEY'RE NOT NINE YEARS OLD. As for the parents, would you buy an extra console for your kid because the current one has signatures, or would you send it to Microsoft because it's perfectly under warrant and THEY SPECIFICALLY TOLD YOU THEY WOULDN'T ERASE IT? People here are taking huuuuge leaps over common sense here. OMG WTF is wrong with you people the end.

Chef

They do highly skilled athletic maneuvers on a nightly basis all year long without the benefit of a second take. It takes a lot of training, dedication, coordination and charisma to do what they do. Hulk Hogan, the Rock, Steve Austin a bunch of others can walk into an arena of 70,000 people, and get the entire crowd to stand up and cheer. What can you do?

DGUW

@ShaggE: I feel the same way....the fact that they did lug it around to get signatures probably contributed to the fact that the system had troubles.

Is everyone forgetting that this case probably happened around the same time or shortly after the original case of this. Your expecting some pretty quick changes from Microsoft. These kind of procedure changes will probably take several months to implement. If they implement changes at all...have they announced changes would be made to the procedure? Or are people assuming they would be changing the repair process? The first person who got hit with this rightfully got compensated for it. Anyone that gets hit with this from the first on will just have to deal...otherwise people will start taking advantage of this.

Basically people need to either:
a) stop getting a system you play regularly, signed by important people. When you get a system signed retire it. Treat it special like you would treat any treasured signature item. Why is your 360 any different?
b) stop getting a system signed and get something else signed.

About Wrestling:
I used to be a fan...when I was like 10-15 (28 now)...but I grew out of it. I can still see why people enjoy it. There's no reason to knock people who like wrestling...it's like any other form of fictional entertainment. I feel sorry though for people who believe it isn't fictional...and that the outcomes are like regular sports, not pre-determined.

thor79

I have no idea what you guys are talking about with all these "mistakes" and crap...

...this is the new Microsoft marketing initiative.

1. Design console well enough to accumulate a good customer base, but also faulty enough to allow for a steady flow of incoming consoles to be repaired.

2. Watch for unique, customized boxes from the repair pool, preferably ones with markings like signatures or drawings.

3. Remove customizations such as signatures or drawings, "fix" console, and return to customer.

4. Wait for customer to die a little inside and contact Microsoft via phone or rabid, frothing, Internet mob.

5. Claim removal as a "mistake", and offer to "fix the situation" using set aside budget to purchase otherwise unattainable products or services catering to the customer's likes and/or hobbies.

The result?: Public image of Microsoft will change as community-generated news spreads, creating image that Microsoft cares about its customers.

Chef

@CreamSodaSlurpee: That fuckin' protocol needs to change, until someone can explain to me what purpose it serves other than to create even greater disaster for Xbox PR leads than they already have with RRoD, power supply, drive failures and HD-DVD.

The XBox's problem does not extend from a signature on the casing, nor any kind of dirt on the outside of it. It's because of the terrible design flaws inside of it. I can't even imagine it has to do with working in a "clean environment" either although I'm sure I'll get some best-practices nonsense about that, when I've replaced internal components, set clock chips, cleaned exhaust fans and done all manner of things inside a desktop computer without having to clean the case, just attach a grounding strap.

Secondly, Microsoft practically encourages this behavior by the creation and licensing of swappable faceplates.

I'll have more on this, and a more humorous take, I promise, in my weekend posts. But the percentage of cases modded in this way has to be so low that Microsoft can't just say, you see something that looks like artwork or a signature on the box? Leave it alone. I don't give a damn if my Xbox doesn't come back clean anyway. I want it to work.

Owen Good

The point of this whole thing is not that wrestlers signed his 360 or that he was using it to play games. The fact of the matter is that Microsoft is removing something of value to the owner. Who the hell cares who signed it or what they choose to do with it? If I got my 360 signed by anyone, be they important or not, and I am forced to send in my 360 for repairs, I don't want some guy to clear all of that off when it's not even the problem. I want my 360 fixed and sent back to me the way I sent it in.

It doesn't matter if the signature is famous or not, if it means something to me, what gives them the right to remove it? It'd be like if someone gave me an iPod with a special signed faceplate to fix (hypothetically, of course) and I replaced the cover with a plain white one. What gives me the right to change what they obviously wanted on their iPod? It's the same with this problem. People send in their special 360s to get them fixed and they completely remove all that was special about it. I think it's a travesty that it's still happening.

armchairnixon sees you doing that thing there...

The only thing I guess that makes me wonder about your opinion is simply that because you know it is a predetermined outcome, it ruins the suspense? Do you know who is going to win, I mean do you have a spoiler in front of you?

To me personally, I feel that there is more possibility for exciting outcomes in pro wrestling, since when a top tier sports team plays the bottom rung team, it really is a forgone conclusion (barring some craaazy situation, which can be fun too)

I guess we each see it differently, which is allright, I see wrestling as a story myself, with lots of pointless plot twists and often stupid turns.

Jypsy

Actually, I don't enjoy wrestling because I don't enjoy wrestling. However, if there was some element of suspense to the outcome, I might be able to enjoy it a little (see: Hockey, Basketball) even if I don't enjoy the core sport.

And sure I can enjoy movies about dodgeball, or whatever. But to compare a movie, or even TV series, to wrestling is (to me) a really unfair comparison.

Soap Operas - where there's an endless string of nonsensical story lines and forced content because they have to keep up what is essentially the exact same storyline or plot thread in each and every show - is the closest I think TV comes to soap operas.

Believe me, I enjoyed some wrestling awhile back during my more drunken college years, so I can relate. But having been able to enjoy it even knowing it was fake, and now thinking I would poke my eyes out with my own toenails if I ever watched any again, has made me think about why.

I love football more than any other sport. After the Super Bowl, I am focused on the draft and after the draft I am focused on training camps and then the preseason. I could save myself a lot of time and just review the scores each Monday without watching the games. It isn't about the outcome, it is about the journey. The outcome is important as part of the story of the season, but unless you are gambling, the fun of football is on the field.

kingofallcosmos

So you cannot enjoy wrestling as a fictional show, because it has predetermined outcomes?

Keep in mind Professional wrestling is not a sport. It is "Sports Entertainment".

Do any of you enjoy movies such as dodgeball, Days Of Thunder, or any of the million sports comedies or dramas? Same thing. It is entertainment and that is that.

Some people do choose to allow themselves to pretend it is real, and that is fine too, just like those that allow themselves to love soap operas or shows like Prison Break.

I fail to see how it is any different from any other fictional programming.

If you feel it worries people that others like watching "men in tights throw each other around" then they have some serious sexuality issues.

It is a soap opera in spandex, plain and simple. It is fine if you don't like it but to arbitrarily bash it because its not a "real sport" is like saying GTA4 is going to be the best game ever without even touching the controller....

Jypsy

I can understand why you're being so defensive, but I'll try to answer from my perspective. It's pretty simple in my own mind, really.

I enjoy sports. Football and baseball in particular. Finding out when someone is cheating, or throwing a game, or betting on outcomes of matches they're involved in, it infuriates me. A large part of the drama I get out of watching athletic competition comes from the suspense of heading towards an outcome. When either or both of the competitors already know the outcome, it loses all real tension for me.

I'm not saying everyone should think like me, but I do get why most people look down upon it. In the end, knowing it's fake but enjoying it anyway boils down to enjoying watching men in tights throw each other around.

@Mr.SithNinja: Someone is trying to talk about a subculture they have no idea about. Having been a wrestling fan for 20 years, I can tell you writing off the sports entertainment business as fictional is about as bad as saying television is worthless because most of it isn't real. Do you have a favorite TV show? Do you like the Family Guy? Scrubs? Seinfeld? None of those shows are real, but does that mean nobody over 6 years old should watch that?

When watching wrestling, it's no different than any other program you can tune into on television in which the events occuring are scripted and *for fun*. I would think that video game players wouldn't have too much of a trouble understanding that, considering their beloved video games are all fictional events too which exist merely to tell a story or provide you with an hour or two of entertainment every night.

Now take that into account and continue to tell me why wrestling is crap but Final Fantasy isn't.

Don't worry, I'll wait.

Lemming To The Sea
