I'm always sad to see mags go as I did grow-up using them for game info (no other choices at the time), but it's incredibly hard to remain competitive these days. Online is faster, has videos, larger (and a greater number of) images, podcasts, video reviews/shows and community input (comments) in real-time. That and it's generally free to the user.

I stopped buying/reading game magazines when the CAD price hovered, and in some cases (OPM), exceeding $10 an issue. I'm just glad the people that made the content what it was/is are going to be around to continue their contributions.

Replica23

@aka Bitter:
i feel like it actually gave them a lot of credibility that although they were sponsored by MS just for them getting their branding on etc they were very outspoken about everything, positive just as much (often way more) negative they had to say about MS policy/Games for Windows Live service etc. It takes some balls to be honest and outspoken about the tech/company that pays your bills. To me they had and have way more credibility than most other game "journalists". Well, basically i only visit kotaku and 1up these days for actual info and offtopic rants i often can relate with, too, anyway.

Also i think Ryan Scott is a great member of the team there, they really have very different characters in there and well, hes just the more silent guy who often just says his standard one liners (like in his case: "what the he-ell?!?") but then in between makes some unexpectedly random fun or wisdomful geek in-story telling part.

tomsamson

@Wubbytoes: Nope, that crown goes to 1up Yours, Game Theory or perhaps Gaming Steve if he ever gets back on a regular schedule. Still a great podcast, but the Lost chat and other off-topic tangents that take up the entire show, along with the non-presence of Ryan Scott(why is he even on there?) take it out of my top spot.

Too bad about CGW though, they should have just gone online before the switch to GFW and saved some dignity, instead of selling out for another year on the shelf.

aka Bitter

I wanted to be happier for them when the magazine graduated into this form but it feels to me like many people will see this in such a negative light, so much so that they and their advertisers may become caught up in it. Here's to their success.

Well maybe now EGM will finally get PC reviews. I honestly believe the only reason it didnt have PC game coverage and reviews was because of CGW/GFW being on the same little network of magazines. Ziff davis didnt want to cannibalize it.

NutManIV

as others said their podcast is awesome. Despite the point its in theory with games for windows focus they have a great mix of covering all platforms and then also bringing in some fun distracting offtopic elements. I hope they will continue it for a long time because its a joy each week. Also as said by others its the nature of the beast that print mags go down and i myself haven´t bought a mag for quite a while, i think the same will happen to pretty much all mags with time and the ones who switch over to the web earlier are maybe actually in better shape later.

What went down as print mag can become very popular on the web, me for example i never saw the gfw mag (since it didn´t come out here ever) and i discovered 1up and the podcast on the net and since then listen to it each week, also read the 1up pages often and watch the 1up show each week, too.
So yeah, i´m sure the gfw guys are all a bit sad now, don´t worry guys, there are many who like what you do and you will probably gain way more fans on the web with time.
Everyone should check out the 1up show
[www.1up.com]
and the 1up podcasts
[www.1up.com]
I can especially recommend 1up Yours and GFW.
Keep it up there Jeff, Shawn and all the crew there, you do great stuff.

tomsamson

I love the writing for GFW--it has alot of what made CGW great, and I can't wait to see if they'll make it work. Magazines are, on the whole, on the way out--especially with the proliferation of portable devices and WiFi, and it's good that they're trying to make the transition. It would suck if they couldn't keep the staff together and ended up scattered to various projects. One of the things that always depressed me about Erik Wolpaw as that I loved his writing, but he didn't have a steady outlet for me to enjoy his work, after OMM froze.

Go GFW!

and screw EGM. I just feel it's important to throw that in there.

deathbunny

Although this is kind of the eventuality of print magazines, I think the last time I looked at a game magazine was a few months ago but thats only because a friend of mine actually has a subscription to EGM. Other then that I haven't looked at a magazine since I was 13. I don't think it's cause the magazine was bad but the fact that you could get the information from the internet easily really makes it difficult for the magazine to keep people interested. I'm glad to know that the editors are gonna work on the PC end of 1UP since that is really lacking.

Jacktherip

The name on the magazine was more akin to your local ballpark having HPs name on it or something. The team is still just a team.

NitrousO

Video game magazines, especially PC games one, are so lame. They "pre-view" games that are 2-3 years away from release, and "review" games that have been out for months. The best part is when they have a cover story talking about a game, and we know that the plug has already been pulled on it!

Sorry, no tears being shed here.

Tarmac

@Polywhirl: No it wasn't. They were pretty clear that they wouldn't do that.

Perhaps it's all the free subscriptions. I never paid for it but I've been getting it for a year now. Nice magazine though...I canceled my PC Gamer subscription a few months back (after like 15 years) and this held me over.

It's true, Mark - Kotaku has played a large part in the death of print. But it was inevitable - if it wasn't you it would have been someone else.

Spoony Bard
