Hmm, I'm super tired right now, but the top 5 I like off the top of my head would be:
1. Silent Hill 2
2. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
3. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
4. Donkey Kong 64
5. Pokemon Red

These games I have have beaten at least three times growing up, so that is why I picked them. Obviously, not all of them are the best games, but I don't have enough time to play all the best games in the world. *shrug*

SpearXXI

In no order:

1. TIE Fighter-so amazing. A rare exception to the "I think remakes are dumb" rule. "Full speed to Killimar", anybody?
2. WarCraft III (w/ Frozen Throne)
3. Fallout (not a surprise if you recognize my name)
4. Half-Life 2 Ep 2 (could probably pick any of them though)

hmm...for #5 I'll say Star Wars Rebellion. Because it's the only game i know of in which you can blow up a planet. And that is awesome.

And before you say "Star Wars Fanboy", I am one. Confessed. But the two games I indicated here are unique in my experience beyond being star wars, so cut me a break.

KillianD

1) System Shock 2 (never played through 1 unfortunately. I feel like a bad person considering how much I like SS2)
2) Morrowind (so much stuff to do! and had complex gameplay that appealed to me)
3) Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher bay (it was somehow awesome. Movie games are *never* awesome, but this one was! go figure. Console or PC it doesnt matter, played the same. - nice high res on PC tho)
4) would have to go to Quake 1 (TeamFortress original specifically). Played this more than any other game.
5) Half-Life1 (but not TFC, with a nod - but not much more - to Counterstrike Beta3-Beta5 - gunrunning: Anti Camper cause you know the next round if that camper wins the enemy are stuffed when *everyone* on your team has a useful gun :D)

Honourable Mention(s):
Beef1942: Desert Combat. (and original 1942)
Heaps of fun on a lan with and against my buddies.
Dynasty Warriors Series (I must have an off switch for my brain. I honestly understand why people hate the series. I honestly don't understand why I do.)
God of War, 1,2 and PSP

You can almost make a full list of games that have annoyed me beyond belief by taking Sequels and spiritual sequels. of my 5 listed above.
1) Oblivion, worst morrowind clone EVAR (the consolonisation of this made it far too simple. Oh and auto-level mobs: WHY!?)
2) Bioshock, Same as #1, Consolonisation and reduction of the SystemShock2'yness -ie rpglike features - turned it into QuakeShock (heavy on weapons, light on gameplay depth/complexity)
3) Half-Life2 - Get in this boat and do the same thing for the next 30 minutes without a gun. Now do it again in a car! with ground breaking AI (hah!) AI that gets told where you are when you pass a certain point in a map, and it runs/shoots at you.
4) TF2 fits snuggly in to my rant. Too simple. the only game on this List I can actually play every now and then. I just won't ever like it as much as TF1
Halo (series)
Super Mario (series)
Guitar Hero (series)
Super Smash Bros (series)

i guess i ended up picking a game from 5 different genres (RTS, FPS, platformer, rhythm, fighting)

if i were forced to pick one game out of each of the series i chose it would be Halo 2 (I like Halo 3's multiplayer better but H2's campaign was much better), Super Mario World, Guitar Hero 2(better tracklist than 3), and Melee (I haven't played Brawl yet ='( so i can't rightly name it with best without playing it).

Crawl to China

Heres my top 5 most favoritest games:

1. Ocarina of Time, because it still blew me away even though I first played it in 2003, after I played Windwaker (My first home console was the Gamecube that came with the Zelda collection).
2. Metroid Prime, because it was the first console game I ever owned, and was freaking incredible.
3. Resident Evil 4, because it was the first actually fun resident evil game I played, and was also mind blowingly awesome in every possible way.
4. Half-Life 2, because it's still the most perfect shooter I've played, even with the lag of the Xbox version. Although, I haven't played Bioshock yet, cause I don't have a 360).
5. MGS3 Subsistence/Silent Hill 2, because MGS3S finally fixed the camera, making it possible to actually see in front of you, and Silent Hill 2 because Pyramid Head gave me PTSD. In a good way.

That's technically 6, but I couldn't decide between MGS3S and SH2, so deal with it.
Also awesome: Starcraft, Eternal Darkness, Soul Calibur 2, Psi-Ops, Persona 3, Jade Empire, Marathon, Pokemon Silver, Dead Rising, Metroid Fusion, Majora's Mask, MUSHA, and Final Fantasy 6.

Placentasaurus

1. Chrono Cross (PSone)
2. Zelda 3: A Link to the Past (SNES)(GBA)
3. Halo (XBOX)
4. Naruto: Gekitou Ninja Taisen! 4 (GCN)(Import)
5. Super Mario 64 (N64)(DS)

1. Was my favorite RPG and is still my favorite story in all of gaming...I've played it about 4 times-I'd have played it more but through the years I was always missing one thing or another...memory cards, cables, the proper system, whatever.
2. Is my favorite Zelda. In agreement with the IGN review of the VC iteration on the Wii, this was the Zelda on which all following Zeldas were based. Zelda 1 was a skeleton, and Zelda 3 was the whole package. There are also more dungeons in this one than any other one...it's a beautiful 16-bit game with series-defining art style.
3. Halo was the first FPS game I ever enjoyed playing...and after that, it consumed me. We would pile a bunch of other high schoolers into an empty house and hook up 16-player Halo madness. The only times we breaked were to eat pizza, change the CD in the stereo, or play pool. This would happen for weekends at a time in the summer of our sophomore year.
4. Naruto: GNT!4 is hands-down the most addictive, fast, deep multiplayer fighting game I've ever played. I was reluctant to try it because I hated the anime series but once I got started I couldn't stop. If you tallied the collective hours of my life I've spent playing the game with friends I guarantee it would outweigh every other game I've played (respectively) and probably come out to a shameful number of weeks.
5. Super Mario 64 was what brought me back into gaming in the first place. I had started to think school was the important thing for my 10-year-old self, but then I found a new reason to get up early every day...to try and get more stars BEFORE school. Mario 64 represented a whole knew world in gaming...a world where you could move in any direction, superfluously regain health my swimming, and befriend flamboyant, pink bombs. Cheers.

TheHeartless

I believe it is impossible to rank a person's top 5 games. At least in my case, love for the game while playing it transcends mere appreciation -- particularly as immersion rises -- but fades the more you tell people why you like the game. As such, it's impossible for me to rank them fairly. I call these my "favorites" because they are among the games that most influence the way I think about gaming and game design.

Uru - Open spaces and silence. Playing this game single-player the first time around was the most thought-provoking "puzzle" game I ever had the pleasure of experiencing. Exploration is your primary objective, not problem-solving. This is most apparent in the two expansion packs, where you must explore the vast abandoned city of D'ni to locate dozens of Great Zero points, which were often floating in mid-air and invisible to the naked eye. Even so, Uru was one of the few "puzzle" games I know based on common sense and abstract thinking at the same time. For example, one of the ages is set on a small island in the middle of a vast ocean. You can see other islands in the distance, but they appear to be so far away that you don't want to try swimming there.
However, if you DO try to swim to these other islands, you discover that it was a perception trick. The "other islands" were merely colored canvases on frames designed to trick you into believing they're real.
Chrono Trigger - Time travel's a bitch. Time travel is a concept rich with game design potential, and yet so few games use it. It's been 13 years since its release and it's still considered by many to be the best videogame of all time. To be frank though, the full implications of time travel are not explored to the fullest in Chrono Trigger, but it is after all 13 years old.

Metroid Prime 3 - Full Motion is coming. This is one of the extremely rare games that really try to fully utilize motion controls. Its primary failing is that for the most part the most advanced implementation of motion controls is the extremely limited "door lock" feature.

Final Fantasy 6 - Evil needs no backstory. This game marked the end of an era in orthodox turn-based RPGs. The implications of the priority shift from gameplay to graphics after this game was for the most part lost on the masses, and many today grieve for the future of game design. Moping aside, this game influenced me in the way it portrayed genuine evil. Many consider Kefka to be the best villain ever made in a videogame, trouncing Sephiroth as the de facto standard. I remember a magazine article that showed a to-scale comparison image of Kefka (in god form) and Sephy. Take a rough guess which would piss his pants at the sight of the other. ;)

Myst 3: Exile - Give a videogame villain life and you've got something special. Myst 3's villain, Saavedro, is played in live-action by a very convincing Brad Dourif, best known for his appearance in LotR:tTT. Saavedro's motive in Myst 3 is revenge on Atrus for the heinous crimes of Atrus's two sons, which took place before the Myst series began. His hatred for Atrus borders on insanity, and it was a quite enjoyable experience. We need more genuinely mad villains.

The Maginomicon

Top five favourites..

This is going to be very emotionally painful, so I think a clean break is best and I'll just post the five and not do the Honorable Mention thing or it'll never end.

Xenogears
Metal Gear Solid 3
Fallout (1)
Silent Hill (1)
Final Fantasy II (IV, except I'll call it II because no other release had Rubicant say "Fight with all your might", so there)

A clarification on why Fallout 1 and not 2: Because I had NO IDEA what I was getting into. The Fallout disc came free with Baldur's Gate a friend of mine had bought, and he lent me Fallout since he'd be playing Baldur's. I popped it in, installed it with no clue as to what sort of game it was, and that's how it began for me.

A similar clarification for Silent Hill 1: A friend of mine had rented it a few days after it was released, and invited me over to try it out. He told me nothing. I had no clue what it was. He sat me in front of the game, told me to start a new one, and left the room.

He BARRICADED THE DOOR while I was playing and turned off the heat (it was cold up here in Canuckistan). So as I played and the game got freaker and freaker, it also got colder and colder...and I couldn't get out of the room and had no idea why! Scared the shit out of me.

These kinds of friends are the best kind of friends, IMO.

Koztah

I'd personally add in Star Control 2 (any platform, though the 3DO was the best), Halo (original Xbox), Total Annihilation (PC), and it's a toss up between Faery Tale Adventure (Amiga) and Dungeon Master (Amiga/Atari ST) for the last spot.

Tinsel

1. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - A Star Wars game that has a story to rival the original trilogy. Interesting and realistic NPCs, dark and light side play throughs and a plot twist that turns your entire perspective on the story inside out.

2. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - Link's first foray in to the 3D world and it couldn't have been done more perfectly. It has the best music of the series and the land of Hyrule is so expansive it truly felt like you were exploring a kingdom which was very impressive for it's time.

3. Banjo-Tooie - Very few sequels live up to the greatness of the original game but Banjo-Tooie took the awesomeness of Banjo-Kazooie and blew it up to gigantic proportions. The overworld was larger, the levels were larger, the bosses were larger and there were collectables galore. Not to mention famous skull shaman, Mumbo Jumbo, left the safety of his skull hut for some hands on dirty work.

4. Conker's Bad Fur Day - Another platformer developed by Rare but this one was slightly different. Sure you play a cute woodland character and visit many themed worlds but when you find yourself battling a singing pile of crap and urinating on flame monsters to put them out then it's a whole new ball game. Not to mention all the @#&*% swearing and the awesome multiplayer modes which often lead to someone's head blowing up with blood going everywhere.

5. River City Ransom - I had many favourite NES games as a kid but none were quite as memorable then River City Ransom. Beating up thugs for loose change was always an awesome experience but when you smashed them in the face with the body of one of their fallen buddies then thats just hilariously awesome. Also a lot of fun to play with a friend and take turns bashing dudes over the head with a trash can. Barf!

CooVee
