@Mujah: So very true! The level of intensity this game delivers and the amount of control makes you feel accountable for winning and losing in combat. I love the counterattack mechanism and hope they expand more on that. There's no better feeling than being bombarded with enemies and counterattacking them amidst the flurry.

ChiChi_BBQ

The whole game was great, but I remember every time I started a fiend-heavy level I'd think "can't I go back to fighting PEOPLE now?" Well, not toward the end; the fiends were great at the end, but at first (like the cathedral level) they're a bit under the level of the humanoids in terms of balance and design.

Spiffyness

Those were the quickest, most satisfying battles in the game, much more so than against the fiends. There was nothing quite as exciting as walking down an alley, having like 6 of those ninjas jump you, and raping them all. It was damned tough on the harder difficulties, but you felt like such a badass at the same time.

Nedus

One thing this article doesn't really clarify, though, is one of the most important things about the perspective from which the writer is coming from: Crecente, did you ever play the original Ninja Gaiden in any of its three incarnations?
If not, I strongly, STRONGLY recommend hopping onto Xbox Live and downloading the Ninja Gaiden Black Xbox Original and giving it a go. It's unforgivingly difficult, but if you can hack it, it's one of the most rewarding experiences I've ever experienced in a game. One of the most amazing things about it has always been that you NEVER die because of a cheap hit; every single bit of health you lose, you know you could have avoided it if you had been a little bit more careful, if you hadn't let that guy get that close to you, if you hadn't started such a long combo when you saw that other guy charging up a spell, etc.
It's good to see that this tradition has been continued for the sequel, but I'd really like some comparisons to the original. You know, as a reference.
Another thing that seems to have been carried over is the "weapons are cool at first, but awesome later" tradition. To understand how amazing the gameplay gets (and yes, I have to say it again), you really should download Ninja Gaiden Black and give it a go. Keep playing and figuring out more combos. Keep collecting scarabs. The Dragon Sword should always be your priority to upgrade, but the Lunar weapon goes from being okay at its original strength to being fun as hell at its first stage of upgradedness, and eventually reaching "HOLY SHIT I KILL EVERYTHING!" levels after the second and final upgrade. The Diablero (or something like that; it's a huge sword that looks like Cloud's, or Guts' of the Berserk anime and Dreamcast game) is also a weapon that gets incredibly fun to use after a couple of upgrades.

The only reason I'm raving on here is because I downloaded the game again just to give it another go, and I rediscovered how perfect it was. It's brutally difficult, but I still haven't seen a better combat system in any action game before or since. God of War is close, but still doesn't hold a candle to the breakneck speed and intensity that Ninja Gaiden attained.

Mujah

Btw, anyone seen the new pics of the kusarigama? Seriously, if there's a NGIII, Itagaki has exhausted nearly every kick ass weapon known to ninjas. All that's really left is for Ryu to actually use the kunai on his legs.

Last note, for anyone complaining about difficulty they did confirm Ninja Dog in NGII will be even easier than Ninja Dog in NGB. So, yes, it's basically Ninja Dog's Bitch. NGII MN is also supposed to be harder than NGB MN, so Team Ninja is broadening the spectrum both ways.

Xiedo

NG Black was/is a fantastic action game. Crecente's observations about NG timing, and how it slows down what at first appears to be lightning quick, is very true.

NG took some time for me to enjoy. I got my ass royally handed to me repeatedly in my first go around with Alma in the church; so much that I had to take time off from the game. I finally got sufficently motivated, and put in some time to learn the gameplay nuances. It payed off and I kicked Alma's ass the first time on my second play-thru attempt. After getting past my initial "button masher" reaction, I was able to enjoy what it was Itagaki talked about when he descibed his game.

coalhalo

I think with Microsoft Game Studios doing the publishing of the game themselves I could see NG2 getting a huge marketing push that previous NG games haven't had the pleasure of getting. I can see NG2 selling much better this time around with Tecmo out of the picture in terms of publishing, marketing and hyping the game.

Tull

Ninja Gaiden on the Xbox is my all time favorite game. I've beaten it on the hardest difficulty multiple time. But getting to that point was was both an exercise in frustration and accomplishment. Until i played that game i haven't wanted to launch a controller through my TV since the Sega Genesis and SNES days. My biggest frustrations were Alma, outrunning that damn boulder and not being able to find one of the scarabs I always ended up with 49. As you may have guessed besides beating the game on the hardest difficulty my biggest accomplishments are having resolved my biggest frustrations. Like everyone has mentioned you HAVE to LEARN how to play the game and absolutely cannot just mash buttons. The first time you pull off an Izuna drop is priceless.

Johnny_Sokko

Most of the time it was pretty decent, but with the boss encounters were pretty bad. I don't care about the lumbering ice monster, I can out run him. What I DO care about are the cat demons who can both move, and kill me faster than the boss can. At some times, you couldn't even see yourself on screen. I really hope they have some way to switch between boss camera, and regular camera.

GustoGaiden

I dislike Ninja Gaiden. I don't get the fascination with it, mostly because succeeding at the first game involved holding block, flipping around, and chaining charge attacks to kill things. I swear, I got so tired of constantly holding the block button, I wondered why I couldn't just make the default stance block and hold a button to run/walk instead.

Also the pissy camera. I hope they bothered to fix it, mostly for the boss battles where they forced the camera on the boss and never on their minion helpers. But hey, I've bitched this bitchery before, no need to go into it again. I'm sure it could be a perfectly fine game if Itagaki's team fixes those flaws from the first. Then again, after two remakes and no fixes, I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't.

Maldron

My brother is pretty pro at it, so kept on urging me to play more as he wanted to show me show much quicker he could beat everything. And the game is so bloody great.

The only things I think that could be done to improve it would be:

1) No goddamn bow bits.
2) More checkpoints.
3) A Ninja Dog's Bitch Difficult
4) More dismemberment
5) NO GODDAMN FIRST PERSON BOWING

I am fairly certain NG2 will be my game of the year by a million miles. The first is just incredible.

The second basically looks to be expanding on it in every way you would want. Better graphics, more weapons etc

It really is like Crecente says, button mashing in NG is not going to get you very far.

The first NG had so many little touches that made it incredible as well. Something tiny that I guess most people wouldn't notice is if you stood on a small rock rather than clipping through it or your other foot floating a little off the ground Ryu would actually rest his foot on it. Tiny graphical touches like that are what for me take a game from being great looking to incredible. Like in RE4 how rain splashes off Leon, his gun etc. One of the biggest dissappointments for me in GeoW was that the rain wass much worse than in RE4, it didn't interact with the character.

Zim

Exciting. Ninja Gaiden Black was hard as hell for me, but I'll probably get this anyway just because there's something very satisfying on a primal level about cutting fools up as a friggin' ninja.

Stormrider

I'm impressed that you put in the comment about the game slowing down as you become more comfortable. It was the same thing with the first one on the Xbox.

The game is soo fast that until you learn combos and the flow of combat, it puts you in this crazy rush and state of panic almost. Once you start figuring it out, it becomes more about thoughtful strategy that you are planning 3, 4 moves into the future or more.

Rubix42

It sounds good, I'd love to play it. I'm sure you will get the same feel and kick out of a successful counter and attack as in the previous Ninja Gaiden games. Although they're hard, at one point everything is fluent and you get amazing skill.

Candlejack
