I'm impressed with this beta so far, especially for a "Console" Battlefield game. What they did here is take BF2, gave it a new engine with destructible environments and at the same time, took away some of the many more options available to you. Maybe they wanted to simplify the game to increase new BF players into the fold or because were just not playing with a keyboard/mouse. As a veteran BF player, I'd like to see more options available to us, like "Commander" mode, that was a hit in the PC version. I'm hoping they will add the things that made the old BF games so much fun. This game can be a hit with your friends, jumping squads and coordinating attacks. I'm looking forward to seeing the final version.

B1ooDshOt

all I have to say is PLEASE PLEASE include team/death match and other game modes!!! Ive been playing the battlefield 2 its cool for a while but it gets old really quick heres why- 1. spawn to make it halfway across the map to get killed, wait 10sec to respawn and repeat 2. one online mode is just wrong I like some variety 3. people just try to get kills to rank up instead of actually trying to win the round 4.(this is somewhat caused by 3.) the games will go on for way too long I mean seriously who wants to play a map hour with no end in site. now I will not get this game if it only has one online mode- maby a rent. This game does look great though I thought being able to shoot through walls in COD4 was cool but to take down a whole wall now thats something!

Molockian

I'm having a lot of fun playing the beta as well. I had the same exact feelings actually. When I first loaded it up it felt like same old battlefield. After a few games I found myself really liking it. As you unlock more items you start to feel the differences a lot more. The destructible environments also really impact the gameplay more than I thought it would. The weapons and health system also feel pretty refreshing in the age of regen health every other game is using nowadays. All in all I think I want to buy the game as well. The DLC weapons are really stupid though, it doesn't mess up the gameplay but it does make you feel cheated.

Nydrin

The Battlefield franchise has only gone downhill for my tastes. Loved 1942, 2 was okay, 2142 meh and I've tried this beta but I couldn't even figure out which guys were on my team and which ones weren't. Add the frustration you get when you get shot all the time without even knowing where it's coming from and you'll understand why I stopped playing after 2 rounds (okay, I just suck but a shooter should be fun for everyone; beginner and pro)

I've installed Frontlines on my laptop and this is a shooter that fits my tastes a lot more. Not to shoot BF:BC down, just my two cents here ;)

Odie20XX

@artistpavel: Yes, but that's not what you'll probably see when you play the game. The in game (meaning gameplay) animations are what is probably most important in making it feel like a big step up for me.

You've seen stills from UT3 and GOW (and even Quake Wars) and the ingame animations instantly break the realism that the textures and models have attained(for me anyways). They still mostly move like a last gen game.
COD4 and the stuff shown from Killzone2 are probably the best realistic animations (the strength is in animation transition states). They really push the feel of realism for me.

Hopefully BF:BC will shine in that department too. But that screenshot tells me nothing except that it can do this-gen quality cutscenes.

I do think BF2 ad 2142 still look darn nice with everything maxed. Frontlines does look noticeably better and Quakewars to me doesn't.

@Thassodar:
I would make a joke about being confused about associating a neutral thing like have "darker skin pigment" with a known NEGATIVE thing like "a gamespot employee", but really the comment wasn't necessary in the first place.

Ehardergardens

I'm a Battlefield vet, been playing since 1942. I pretty much gave up on EA/Dice after they gimped Battlefield 2 for the PC. Collision problems, clipping issues, red tag bug, rank issues, ect ... all of those things turned me off of the Battlefield series and I decided not to hop aboard the BF:2142 wagon (which sucks as I had some friends that I played BF with for years, but I just couldn't stand the problems any longer). I never played BF:MC for the 360, and I'm on the fence about this one. After playing Call of Duty 4 online and seeing how nice the gameplay mechanics are ... I'm unsure if this BF will be just as tight. I didn't care much for the other CoD online multiplayer action ... but 4 just seemed to hit the spot. They got it right, and it's damn good.

Since this does have a single player story ... I might bite. Will wait for more reviews of course. That goes with any game that costs $60 these days.

dead_red_eyes

I don't think theres too much of a problem with moderate-cost DLC weapons; I do think there will be huge problems in-game, when every 13yrold kid that loses a match will attribute it to either a) the fact that he was not using DLC weapons, or b) his opponents were. The foul mouths of kids that never went through a mental-growth phase are already bad enough, even with the possibility of "cheats" mostly eradicated with Live; imagine what kinda crap they'll be spewing now that they have a somewhat legitimate excuse.

muu

Bad company I'll probably get for the pc and not for console based on the fact Frontlines doesn't seem like it's going to live up to a BF.

@tei: Gimped for newbs? They are realistically more controllable based on the propulsion system and they also have more effective countermeasures. Not sure what you mean? I find the air vehicles both realistically futuristic and better balanced than Bf2 in 2142, but this may be just due to my experience with them.

Ehardergardens

No BS impressions from a guy who's played it for at least an hour every day:
(these are opinions from a BETA, I know some of these features will change...)
The Bad:
-Classes are unbalanced. The only two that you really need are the support and the sniper class. The support class can heal himself/others AND repair vehicles while the sniper dominates long range with the rifle, short range with an overpowered pistol, and vehicles with a target designator. If you upgrade these two classes to their fullest there is no need to use the other three (unless you like blowing up walls, which we all do)
-Bullet spray is annoying. Or at least different enough from CoD4 that it makes me wish I had the latter again. Some weapons are downright annoying to shoot (assault rifle) with zoomed in (iron sights). The sights are bulky and get in the way, and the targeting is not sensitive enough.
-Vehicle handling is touchy and sometimes downright frustrating. It's all good until you get to any kind of incline or solid object (like a supposedly destructible wall) and have your several ton tank thrust into the air, sometimes being unrecoverable. A tank should blast through a wall no problem (they do in the movies right?) so I shouldn't have to spend the next 30 seconds backing up. And by that time I've already been zeroed in by 3 snipers so it doesn't matter anyway...
-Vehicle targeting is another thing that gets me. I don't like having to compensate my aiming for my movement (i.e. turning the turret while I turn the vehicle the opposite way). I realize it's realistic, but it causes problems with the above point about inclines because if you go over one the aim is thrown completely off. Halo has ALWAYS gotten it right with vehicle aiming that compensates for your turning. C'mon, it's the 21st century, I'm sure tanks can compensate for turning now adays...

The Good:
-Sniping. It feels so realistic. You really have to lead someone to get them. Oddly satisfying (in a non-creepy kind of way...)
-Destruction = Awesome. Although not universal, it's still freakin' sweet to see a shell zoom over your head and destroy the wall directly ahead of you, raining bits of the now destroyed wall all around. Adds a level of immersion we've been longing for in this generation
-Speaking of immersion, the sound is incredible in this game. I highly recommend you try it with a surround system, the different environmental and weapons sounds really do add to the fun
-Destroying the gold is a lot more interesting than capturing flags, and the fact that the battlefield extends to only hold two at a time really focus the action (instead of the age old frustration of having flags captured behind your back)
-Out of time, or I would list more good things

4sparta

Despite the whole Downloadable content flamewar that's going on in the interwebs, I think this game is incredibly fun. It's got a huge amount of depth in it's gameplay mechanics, a heavy dose of skill is needed to do things, and it just feels fun. If Battlefield is about making you feel like your in a giant battle, this is a success story.

Definitely a purchase in my book

WolfofWar

The problem with the Battlefield series is that the ground combat (FPS) component of it has always been sketchy. It never feels right, like your floating around clipping. I had always wished they could release an engine that would combine the FPS components of a game like COD, with the wider vehicle based combat of BF. But it doesn't seem like thats ever going to happen unfortunately.

slowreader

Don't buy EA until they change their ways, because they are doing that to every damn game now. Look at Madden, they are charging 60 bucks just to update player stats.

So...did they fix the insane fall damage? You can go up ladders, but theres no way of coming down without taking 1/4 of your health away in fall damamge...at least give me a parachute like in BF2: Modern Combat.

...and since theres no health crates and the support classes aren't played as much (since their huge ass guns do less damage than an SMG in this game), theres really no way of recovering health if you're a sniper or a specialist that doesn't get a health injection as a gadget.

Did I mention the reticle moves way to slow, even if you dial the sensitivity up to max? Why can't I trail a running guy when I'm not even using the iron sights?

...and don't get me started on "unlockables". A very poor COD4 copy attempt, but with the actual things that made the BF2 classes in the previous games worth while. No laser target for the sniper? No land mines for the heavy weapons? Thats absurd.

Zaid

my one big issue with the beta is to me the shooting is broken.being an fps the shooting should be spot on but it feels like im always just spraying everywhere and the enemy has a ton of health.maybe ive played to much cod4 hardcore but the aiming just isnt precise with anything but a sniper rifle.the iron sites are way to zoomed in with assault weapons.the special ops guns all line up on the right side of the screen when zoomed in and light machine guns are too wild.shotguns are just about right though.it is a fun game but im not gonna buy it mostly because i dont support eas need to rip off its customers at every chance they get.

Truepatriot

There's still some balance issues they need to fix, but otherwise the more I play the damn game the more I want to play it even though the DLC thing pisses me off.

whiptcracker

I seem to be playing it alot but not completely enjoying it. The game seems unbalanced (of course it is the beta so maybe it will be fixed). The artillery makes defending annoying, the defenders are equipped with a few anti vehicle turrets but they are gone within seconds due to the artillery. Haven't actually used the artillery though since its such a race to get to it first then everyone starts team killing for about 2 minutes because they wanted to use it.

liquid_kore
