In all honesty, the real differences between SONY models are really marginal and for all intents and purposes beneficial for the customer. In the new rev, they bumped up the bluetooth functionality and made wireless networking a standard while at the same time reducing the the cost.

Personally I'm in the camp that does not care that they removed backwards compatibility since I'm also in the camp of 200m+ users who already own a PS2; and I don't know about you, but I prefer playing my PS2 on a SDTV, upscaling be damned.

On the other hand the 360's variants not only affect usability and or funtionality but (depending on whether the Core/Arcade was purchased) affect future cash outlays as well. $180 for a 120GB HDD seems really steep, and $90 for a 20GB HDD is clownshoes silly.

any ps3 model really wouldn't be a bad choice, it does play ps3 titles and always will. i would wait till the sku with the dualshock 3's are released mid april and buy then.

i agree, it's irratating when the controller disconnects happen, but it's not so often that it ruins everything, but it will happen once every gaming session, sometimes more than once, but i've come to accept it, then i go back to my 360 and/or wii and play 'disconnect' free.

it's not the controller, it's definitely a hardware issue with the console itself. i've got two imported dualshock 3's and they both will sometimes 'lock up' just like my dualshock sixaxxis controllers.

so to say its the controllers, well i dunnno....but it's not the controllers. i guess its my japanese versions that are the reason now since i didn't wait to buy my dualshock 3's at walmart.

FWIW, I'm hoping the recertification is a result of upgrading existing components for a smaller and more home theater friendly "slim" PS3. (ie IR Port, case redesign, rear facing USB port(s), and updated audio codec support.) Now that the format war is over it wouldn't surprise me if Sony intensified their focus on the Blu-Ray / home media device aspect and offer items like BC as premiums available via download.

Either way a new model will be interesting to dissect. :)

Any wonkiness experienced with the Sixaxis controller is due to a problem with the controller itself, mainly controllers which came out at the system's launch, and not with the PS3. If you wish to get rid of said controller drop outs, buy a new controller, i know it sucks and sony should have probably done a recall, but that's the way things are.

People whining about the multiple sku's are just looking for excuses for NOT to get a PS3. I upgraded my 60GB to 250GB a few months ago and Im quite happy with it, as for the BC, sure I have BC on mine but I've only played a PS2 game on it ONCE for about 10 min. If anything I use PS1 BC almost as much as PS3 games and ALL PS3s have PS1 BC.

This is the way I look at it. If they kept the original 20 and 60GB models, here's what I see happening:

1.) We wouldn't see a price drop happen so quickly into the cycle

2.)Sony wouldn't be catching up to the 360 so quickly

3.) PS3 games would sell even worse because of this

At $500 and $600, the PS3 was way overpriced. For the mainstream consumer, as well as Sony, and developers, cutting down the price of the console at the cost of PS2 BC is worth it. You have to weigh the benefits and costs, and to me, it's clear that they made the right decision.

personally i feel the be all, end all of ps3 sku's was teh 60 gig model. you get all the features, including backwards compat, and you can upgrade the HDD to your hearts content. There is nothing any future ps3 sku up to this point has done to top it, other than the 40 gig model being 399.99. and even that came with a sacrifice of features so it doesn't even totally count in my eyes.

I'm really really happy i picked up a 60 gig mode when it went down to 500 bucks. I finally just got my wii last week as well so now my hardware buying is done for a while :).

The main reason so many people bitch about PS2 BC is because it was taken away. If it was never there to begin with, we wouldn't see this outcry. Most people who own a PS3 rarely ever play PS2 games, since they pretty much look like crap on an HDTV and there's plenty of PS3 games to play.

Most people who want PS2 BC (including myself) already own a PS2. It's not like Sony has completely gotten rid of it anyway. If you want a premium feature, pay the premium price. The 80GB model plays most major PS2 titles.

It's only Sony that decided to kill off PS2 BC, not any of the users. BC, for reasons I don't know, is still as high in demand as new PS3 games. Crazy shit.

Perhaps you dislike the fact that Sony has several SKU models registered, but as long as they don't have more than two out there, it's never "ridiculous".

If anything, it's nice to offer choice to the consumer.
