I've only tried Rock Band last week and it was a deception. The drum feels so much like a toy that the drummer inside me felt really ashamed ! "What are you doing ? You're better than that, you deserve to play on something more serious !"

Rock Band helps to build the sense of rythm and some basic technics, but that's it. The pads are okay, but they don't rebound enough, so there's plenty of things you can't do on it. The pedal is a total piece of shit, it's too light, it doesn't rebound at all and it responds not that well. You don't get the feeling of a real one at all.

The hardest thing to get used to use properly on a real drum is the hi-hat and it's not even included so we'll pass on that one ...

And yeah that guy obviously knew how to play drums before ...

Before Rock Band, I had no idea what I was doing drum-wise. But, after playing my way through medium, then hard, and now 1/2 way through expert, it has taught me a little bit.

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not suggest I am an amazing drummer, who puts Neal Pert to shame. But I CAN keep up a pretty bad-ass beat. So, basically, Rock Band can be a stepping stone.

Also, there's just no accounting for real drumming skills outside of Rock Band. True, you can build a passable foundation but there are no cymbals on the Rock Band kit. You don't have to cross your hands to play the hi-hat. Also, the rebound on an electric pad is nothing to the skin on a drum head.

I've been playing drums for most of my life so when I saw Rock Band it reminded of the drum machines I used to have when I was a kid. In essence a toy, no offense.

I'm sure all these guys respect Rock Band but you don't get this good playing a toy, no offense Rock Band-ers that are looking for drumming careers after getting 94% on "Tom Sawyer".

I've been playing Rock Band drums for awhile now and enjoy it, and it has inspired me to want to play real drums. I know I won't be very good when I start, but it was just the fact that it felt fun to do in the game, and now, I want to be able to do the real thing.

That's exactly how it works.

I started playing Rockband after work (Best Buy) every day to see what it could do for me. I am hitting at least 90% expert on about half of the songs now, so I tried to see what I could do on our drummer's drumset the other night.

The results? Well, I'm definitely still no drummer, which is to be expected. But he showed me a couple of beginner songs as far as drums go and I was able to mimic them immediately. So, yes, it does do something for you, but that should be obvious considering the fact that the rudimentary elements of drumming are all present in this game (rhythm, seperating your hands and feet, continuing beats between hands and feet without having to think hard about it etc.)

Really, the hi-hat pedal and the position of the drums... along with the sensitivity are the only things I feel I need to really practice a little before I can start actually playing most the songs on Rock Band on a real kit.

Cos half of drumming is learning to control both hands and feet independently... which is something you can totally pick up on Rock Band if you're good enough... (like 5-starring most expert songs, including hitting the drum rolls.

In any case: fuck yeah, dude! I bet DEP totally rocked the fuck out of Yeovil. One of my favorite shows of all time is a DEP show that I caught in a DC club called the 9:30. The place has PR speakers that tower above the floor, reaching the second level. A quarter into their set, Puciato climbed the speakers, leapt onto the balcony, and screamed into some poor girl's face--who looked fairly mortified by the experience. Great, great show.

I'd say there is about a 0% chance he could hop on a set of drums for the fist time after playing Rock Band and play like that.

How do I know? he can do doubles with his kickdrum foot, the fills he was doing, and his use of symbols.

Definately a front. Having said that, I've played Drums for around 11 years, and I'd say Rock Band is a very good Drum trainer. The expert setting is pretty much exactly the real drum beats, just shoehorned to fit onto 4 drum pads.

Its a nice video, but its fake. I garantee he has alot of previous drum experience.

Have either of you listened to any of their CDs? Have either of you heard any one of their non-single songs? I recommend you pick their albums up (download, whatever) and take a listen. From what I see you think Coheed is a simple affair which is pretty far from the truth. I'm not going to bitch on how you're knocking my favorite band but, honestly, download 'Everything Evil', 'In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3', 'Cuts Marked in the March of Men', and just about anything from their No World For Tomorrow album.

And in regards to Chris, someone can't change their opinion on something? Sure, he made remarks earlier about Coheed but now he obviously doesn't see them that way anymore and likes what they are doing. He wouldn't join up with them and take Josh Eppard's place for no reason. As apparent fans of his, one would think you would respect his decision and not mock his current endeavor.

Kinda reminds me of Thrice fans. There are those who grow with the bands and their members and enjoy watching the evolution of their music over time and their are those who bitch and moan when they don't get what they're used to or want.

On topic: Rock Band can't teach you how to play drums, but it will teach you some pretty good rhythm fundamentals. If RB leads to more kids playing drums, then great.

BUT, after playing Rock Band for a month or two and I got back behind my actual kit, I found I had got better. My fills were better, and I'd learned to play faster notes (eights and even sixteenths at slower tempos) on bass pedal. As a matter o' fact, I saw tons of improvement in my bass drum playing.

So it helps, but I still don't think it'll teach you everything. Though I was super impressed by Kevin performance, stunned even, thats for sure.

It's not really great because I did it as fast as possible using VERY low-fi tech (which means not waiting to retry a song I messed up.), but I was playing the drum lines on the screen as they came up. I've got several others now including Tom Sawyer.

I can tell from experience that if you have a complete lack of rhythm in your bones, games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band help train that rhythm. After all their *gasp* rhythm-based games!

I'm getting the feeling we'll see more of these stories pouring out just like the Wii/Rehab connections.
