I dont think XBL was breached. It was a case of social engineering. IE the human was the weakpoint in the encryption (being support staff, or the user themselves)

Id guess the same is true here. Social engineering broke the system, not hackers.

@Polywhirl: Well the issue you referred to for Xbox live has been resolved as what I stated earlier. People should log in and check their PSN account even if they haven't been duped into giving up their user information. This problem, from the description, suggests that this issue is a little more out of the user's control (I'm speculating now) and may be more then a simple phishing scam. I thinking something happened internally... maybe an employee stole something. It really does suck.

It's largely the same situation. We have no statement from Sony claiming they were hacked. That means it's probably the same exact thing that happened to Live.
Either way, it sucks.

I'm not going to rip on Sony for this, because almost any company that has ever had account numbers stored on a server has been compromised at least once. Even those that are dedicated to nothing BUT account numbers and transfers (Bank of America, PayPal, WaMu Bank...) Even XBL has been breached, however briefly, a time or two.

Shit happens, it sucks, but at least they caught it and are getting people informed about it.
