And time might prove that they made a bad business decision. All companies do. Sony and Microsoft have made major blunders and analyst come in to try to convince you that they haven't. If Sony is so proud of what Blu-Ray has done so far, release some real numbers. Show your true development cost and your expenses so far. Show how much you have given away and how much you have actually sold. Until they are open and honest about these things, anybody that believes in Blu-Ray is taking a chance. Also, is it a 1080p capable TV? cause it makes a huge difference. Also, your sound set up makes a HUUUUGGGGE difference. But then until PS3 updates the BD sound to DTS-HD Master audio... things will just be marginally above par.

Obviously the idea of anything replacing disc format is hard to imagine in today's market and as Spartan1308 pointed out, the infrastructure would need major work before digital downloads become a consisent, viable alternative. However, I work at a major book & music store and I've seen how poorly CDs have begun to sell with the rise of mp3s and services like iTunes. So it's not difficult for me to imagine a scenario where movies and games become as easy to buy online as music is now.

I'm on 1.6Mbit/s which is the most I can get over here, and few people in Europe even touch that. A download of a typical 1080p Blu-Ray would take at least 8 hours, and that's with a constant speed of 1600KB/s (roughly 1.6Mbit/s).

Streaming of that content obviously becomes impossible as soon as the bitrate tops 1.6Megabits. Which it easily does already. I think with BR standards, we're talking 14Megabits and upwards.

As for blu-ray ... I had an HD-DVD player. It came with "Bourne Identity"—which I enjoyed in the theater—and "300"—which I thought sucked. While I loved the comic book, the movie just didn't do it for me. We returned the player because neither the wife nor I got any extra enjoyment from the increased resolution (and yes, I have an HDTV). I don't imagine that blu-ray is going to make me any happier than HD-DVD.

A pretty picture doesn't make a bad movie good. Also, we prefer watching movies on our XGA projector, which doesn't benefit considerably from an HD signal (particularly when displaying widescreen movies). I'll probably stick with DVD until you can't buy them anymore.

You're completely ignoring the current bottleneck throttling bandwidth. As bandwidth increases, so will the viability of multi-GB downloads in short periods of time.

I try and get a physical copy of every PC game I buy, but I'm more interested in the possibilities of "On-Demand"-like content (if you have Comcast, that is). If they were able to maintain a large enough library, you would never have to leave the house to rent a movie again, and they start playing instantly.

I agree sir =) no doubt I would take a physical disc in my hand with the extra content it comes with. I buy a lot of dvd box seasons and I like having them in disc format with all that extra content. With the speed of my net(and americas) I would not want to download anything. HD vids to download would take so long to get anywho I would rather spend the money to just go out and get it myself. Its a lot better that way and besides Blue ray can do more then a download

Give this some thought. Imagine all of your content being in digital form only. How will you transfer this magical data? What if there are limitations on how many times you can use that data in another device? Now consider virus protection from inserting the jump drive/USB drive/etc into another device. With a physical media it's read only so no viruses can affect the disc you put in another system. I could go on and on but having your entire video/game collection on a HDD doesn't speak to well to redundancy. Let's hope that drive never crashes.

And for all you Halo junkies forget about the midnight launches in front of Gamestop. You'll just sit at home and hit refresh on the Marketplace until the download becomes available. Now imagine 3 million people all trying to download a XXGB (or bigger since there's no physical media to worry about) and having to wait hours and hours because the servers are being slammed.

Remember how XBL was up and down for weeks around Christmas time? Multiply that by a trillion with ALL media being download only.

Welcome to the future where no one leaves their couch or experiences real life because they didn't want a pesky disc to deal with. Have your future, I'll take Blu-ray, or whatever else "they" come up with, for as long as they offer physical media. I dread the day when we're downloading EVERYTHING and it's the ONLY way we can get content.

That link you sent me though only really talks about all Blu-Ray players. I think this article here on Kotaku is based off of the full report and it states that 13 million Blu-Ray player sales will be consoles. Since the PS3 is the only BR console, that has to mean 13 million PS3 sales by end of year. There is obviously a lot of confusion in all of this.

Anyway, 400,000+ a week would be 10.5 million in 6 1/2 months, so this analysis would actually be saying, if it is indeed saying the PS3 will sell 13 million, that the PS3 will start selling more per week, at a pretty good rate, and it will sell 13 million units on top of what it has already sold in '06 and '07.

That's what I'm getting anyway. If I'm wrong, sorry, I'm just going off of what I'm reading and thinking.

It is a pretty bold estimate. Jan-March there have been about 2 million in sales. Extrapolate that to the end of the year, and you are at 8 million.

However, that 2 million was sold with no major game releases... So you might expect some big sales with the release some of the big hitters coming soon (exclusives & GTAIV will drive sales). Then there's the holiday season at the end of the year...

So I'd guess they'd hit maybe 10 million in '08.

These guys are suggesting that it will do another 3 million better probably based on the Blu-ray victory.

This analysis is based on the fact that the PS3 stays on track with it's 400,000+ units a month it sells, or go up to about 460,000+ a month. Because 460,000 units a month equals 3 million total units in 6 1/2 months. And what comes in 6 1/2 months? You got it...the end of the year.

This is basically saying the PS3 will have 13 million TOTAL consoles sold. My "analysis" is some of the PS3's biggest titles are coming out this year, and that should push the sales up quite a bit. Maybe it'll hit 15 million by the end of this year, 16 if more people buy than I currently expect.

The short answer: either 2048 or 4096 horzontal line resolution. Your BR on a full HDTV does ~1/4-1/2 the lines over ~5-15% of the area. So, unless you have a TV half the size of a theatre screen, you're getting better than movie theatre resolution with BD+HDTV.

I bought shit loads of blu-ray during these sales because they were cheaper than DVD's. Now I just hope that lawsuit by the old lady few days ago won't kill off blu-ray, or PS3 for that matter =/ I doubt it'll happen but there's still a small part of me that's worried.

But yeah, even for games, Amazon.com is amazing when it comes to deals, so people really should check it out =)

That's not 29 million sold in 2008, that's 28 million in homes by the end of 2008, which counts Blu-Ray players already in homes. So I think they mean 13 millions PS3s sold total, not in just 2008.

@Magic Emperor Anima: If you have a nice sound system as well, Kingdom of Heaven is just jaw dropping on BD. Plus, it's the extended cut so there is actual character development. Also, the transfer on Unforgiven is just fantastic.
