@Huxle: Doche, seriously, I wouldn' be able to stress the incredible strain Zack and Wiki put on me. Most of the puzzles are as Yahtzee stated. The game throws you into an assortment of rooms to wield several specific items, then the game proceeds to sit back and laugh its head off at you for looking at something apparent in the environment over something less conspicuous. hen the game punishes you for trying one thing over the other without thinking of what would come next in order to make this puzzle work. At least that's how I think someone felt in order to complete the puzzles in the quickest manner with the least amount of failed attempt that won't kill you 60 percent of the time.

I have a pile of games to play through so in order to breeze through onto the next thrill-fest, I employed a helpful, mostly "Hint based" Faqs guide. This is a single player game so I'll thank you not to jump on my back whining and screaming that I didn't get the full experience like the other Wii owners with empty calendar dates. I found I got PLENTY Wack and Sticki on the second to last level in the "Promise Land" I'll call it... Right. The 27 times I tryed to go through the damn level was in part due to the sheer length, the multitude of gestures and above all the ackward way I, and Left Handed gamer, had to hold the mote during sword play, I eventually figured out that the gesture of a forward Right Handed Sword thrust on screen could be yanked backwards towards the player right handed, thus a la Left Handed. So the only thing left I had the attend to was the split second reaction puzzles :(

That being said Huxle, I'd WHOLE HEARTEDLY recommend to pick up Zack and Wiki for a friend with a Wii, It's definitely worth the agonizing Console Gesture Puzzle Based premise for truly outstanding innovation and quality compared to the rest of the Third Party Support. Zack And Wiki feels like a "from the ground up" Wii game with the system and player in mind. And the challenge only adds to the sheer HARDCORE limits this game breaks on a console that desperately need a shot in the arm before the arrival of No More Heroes, yet to play, and Brawl...

While the story is ... kinda not there, just having to figure out a well-thought-out puzzle makes this a game worth owning. I still haven't done it all.

Zack & Wiki was one of the very few console games I didn't buy pre-owned. I anticipated it so much that my heart died a little when I went through the first stage (the intro one). I couldn't stand it. I HATE those frigging verbose click-through-a-ton-of-text typical of most Nintendo games (something that got ridiculously out of hand in Paper Mario). After that it got much better though and now I'm enjoying it a lot. Still not loving it as much as I thought, though.

@KommissarK: Yeah, aside from the finicky parser from the first 4 Kings Quest titles, the series was generally pretty reasonable. To be honest, Yahtzee's boy Tim Schafer deserves as much, if not more blame. Monkey Island 2 was one of the worst "this puzzle doesn't make sense" offenders. I've re-played it a few times, and I still dread the spitting contest.

I was a huge fan of the King's Quest series and Roberta Williams is one of my heroes. But then I never played any of her other adventure games.

I liked Zack and Wiki, but the dying thing sucked.

I am beginning to feel about ZP the same way I feel about webcomics. Most of them are hit or miss, with very little in between.

Random restarting deaths? What the hell are you talking about? Pretty much every death I had in the game upon reflection had an exact cause that on subsequant play throughs was avoided. Also you aren't meant to randomly touch everything you are supposed to think hence why you have a camera that can look over the entire area and can even zoom in.

As for the shrunken head commenter you honestly never realized that sparkiling meant a hidden object you rang the bell for?

Phantasmagoria 2 had some logic train issues which may be the source of hate. Getting something from under the coach requires the use of a pet and a few other objects when in the real world you would have just pushed the coach? Make the method using blob unlock an easter egg or something else unexpected.

Just because Pratchett has Alzheimers doesn't mean the game didn't stink. I'm a huge Pratchett fan myself, but the last book he wrote was...well, let me just say he didn't need to make an announcement, we knew something was wrong.

As for whether the Discworld game did, or did not, suck...I can't answer having never played it. But I have played several of the games highlighted, including Grim Fandango, an all time fave of mine. But do you know what bothers me with these games, as with Zack & Wiki, you need to solve their logic puzzles according to their logic, and that kind of thing often makes me scratch my head and give up.

Ahh I loved it, I chuckled like hell at the line "when bump mapping was just something cartographers did to their wives". Funniest in a while I must say.

I remember the day when I actually used to ship my N64 games from Austrailia as many got an earlier release date compared to the U.K, sad days as I also lived in Germany and lived in fear of Perfect Dark never seeing the light of day there. I loved my N64.

Played the online flash demo of Zack and Wiki, hardly anything compared to the wii version I'm sure, but a nice idea none the less.

@MeanMF: I immediately thought of Zork II as well; can't think of another game that had such a puzzle. Although parts of that game were pretty close to "moon logic," too. Like the bloody baseball diamond, or the Bank Of Zork. (To this day I don't understand the Bank Of Zork; I just had to follow a walkthrough verrrrry carefully. At least the obtuse Mirror Box and Royal Puzzle of Zork III make sense once they're explained.)

RE: Zack & Wiki - I thought I was an alien for not liking it more when everybody was heaping praise on it. The very Japanese "story" and art direction and THOSE BLOODY SQUEAKY VOICES just kept me from really enjoying it. It was like moist, delicious cake with snot flavored icing on top.

@Doomstalk: Yeah, I'm with you. What was with all the anger towards Roberta Williams, alot of her work was great back in the day, what with some of the wit and humor behind the KQ series. Besides, the puzzles in those games are not completely off the wall in logic.

He nailed everything I liked and hated about Zack & Wiki (except the horrible title). His screed against the beloved P&C adventure game "item logic" of the 80s and 90s is spot-on, and I too hated the random, re-starting deaths in Z&W, which brought to mind Sub Zero Adventures of N64 (give me three seconds to THINK about the damn mirror puzzle before I die, you stupid ice beast!), and the useless hint system, which is one ribbon short of the Resident Evil typewriter save system. I enjoyed the game, but I pretty much agree with him (especially the whole dying thing). This is the first time I'm saying this, because it's pretty much the first time I can recall having played the game he's trashing.

In other news, I don't know about anyone else, but I think using gamefaqs on an adventure game is pretty lame. So when I got to the last level, I said to myself, "fuck this", and I never got around to finishing the damn thing. BTW, what the hell were all those shrunken heads strewn about the various levels?

I'm one of those still defending this game trying to make people understand its not "wii shovelware", but the points he brought up are true.
There those little annoying choices that the art director done that in fact kill the gameplay, but heck, I would not mind a Z&W 2 with some actual deep storyline, and better character personalities.

@marissa_melee: Probably just because it's not a very large market. The US and Japan get their games when they want because they're the biggest consumers, with the UK getting theirs a little after because they're third. Whether it's release dates or government banning, Australia really gets the shaft when it comes to games.

Yea I got the game after all the buzz it had but the constant deaths and having to restart killed the game for me. I shouldn't have to restart a level because I examined something that didn't appear dangerous at all but decide to beat my face in with no way to stop or dodge it. Maybe when I was a kid and had more time to play games that would have been acceptable but not now.

I found the funniest part (either done on purpose or not) was the complaint about the wheel turning puzzle. With the two hands on the wiimote thrusting, it looked like a penis. Given Yahtzees penchant for homoerotic jokes, well....

I agree with a lot of his assessment of the adventure gaming genre, but I don't harbor quite the same level of animosity towards Roberta Williams. The Kings Quest series still managed to be quite fun regardless of any issues it might've had.

@Lokno: I suppose so; seems to me like Psychonauts was his attempt at actually showcasing a game he liked in hopes people would buy it, but then people started telling him that they like it more when he's angry so, well, here he is.

But now I'm just speaking on Yahtzee's behalf. Most of his games are reviewed shortly after they see an Aussie release, so I assume those are the games he's assigned to review. It's all speculation in the end.

@Lokno: ZP came out, if I'm not mistaken, after Twilight Princess had already been released and Yahtzee as a rule of thumb never goes back to games that have already been released for a while. I might be mistaken, but that's the impression I've gotten.

Wonderful as always, but then I'm always entertained by him. Yahtzee has a certain charm that I always find incredibly hilarious regardless of whether he's insulting my intelligence or a game I love.
