I did this to one of my controllers along with one of those smooth as silk cases. It took a bit to make one of the bumpers fit just right but I am very pleased with the results. It looks awesome and it's good for late night CoD4.

Now If I can just find a gold chrome controller shell and 360 case to match my gold plated AK in CoD4 I'd be happy.

I bought one of those mod packs and did it myself. It worked great for a while, but after about 2 weeks, one of my triggers stopped working. I then took it apart to see what the problem was, and the replacement triggers that they sent me didn't fit perfectly. It in turn ruined the whole controller because I couldn't replace that one place.

@enewtabie: Yeah I liked it enough to try this out, the first one came out horrid, however my second attempt was a triumph. Also, I have been trying to get my fiancee into gaming and she was having troubles remembering where the buttons were in the dark LEDs = Problem Solved.
@Struct09: The picture was taken from llama's site not his personal controller.

For anyone who is interested read through llama's other mods for the 360 great stuff I made it so my controller has the RRoD when they turn on, pretty funny when other friends come over to play.

Also, before you do this (or do any other LED mods), not all LEDs are created equal. Colors such as blue are much brighter than say, red or yellow LEDs. So your multi-colored LED controller won't as sleek as you hope.

To anyone thinking about doing this: it's really easy, I modded one of my PS3 controllers and a few other things (in a classy fashion) with LEDs and putting the subject back together with minimal extra pieces is the hardest part.

@Blinkstale: I liked the various mods I could do on the original Xbox. Most controller cables had translucent plastic for the breakaway piece. So I added LEDs to the plugs to match the colors used in the corresponding controller. Made 4 player matches easier IMO.

As long as it's not overdone (look at any little '94 civic on the road today) a couple LEDs can be a good thing. A PS3 controller buttons could use some lighting via a couple white LEDs (looks for dremel).

Man, talk about OLD. This was 'news' soon after the X360 launch. I modded one of my wireless controllers (without the surface mounted leds, though) from these very instructions years ago. But I'll check the site if they ever figured out how to do this on a wireless without a separate on/off switch.

If anything, this would have been a great 'monday' article. Certainly is bringing out all the very original and funny comments.....

Speaking of RRoD, my 360 was acting up this weekend and I have a Best Buy Service Plan, so I took it to my store. They swapped 360's with me and gave me $53 store credit because it is cheaper now. I'm pretty certain you could do this on the old xbox controller also. Those buttons are actually pretty frakin huge if you take one apart, tons of space for a light. Although I think it'd be a lot nicer if they weren't so bright it seems like it'd be distracting.

I think every controller should have a slight glow under the buttons. Not necessarily in colour, because I think that looks a little annoying on the 360 pad. The PS3 pad for instance wouldn't die from a well placed white glow under the PS button...or the other ones for that matter. That's what I always liked about the 360 pad by the way (the glowing guide button).
