If I buy the GPS for the Japanese version, will it work in the US?

The games I want are available on both versions. I think Skype is only available in the US version or has it been released in Japan yet?

What other pros and cons should I consider?

My justification was that the disk drive gave out on my PSPhat with less than two months until the PSP Slim. I ended up getting the silver Slim, which sits next to my Phat. The Phat is still good for everything but gaming, so if I need to watch videos on the road, I can use that and not worry about batteries on my regular one.
