@Spiffyness: What kind of Router/Modem/etc setup do you have?

My recommendation is to get the Xbox 360's MAC address and then use MAC filtering on your router to assign it an IP (so it always has the same IP), then tell the router to either open the ports for Xbox Live (ports 88 for UDP/TCP and 3074 as well) to that IP, or make that IP your DMZ, though that basically exposes the Xbox so it may pose a security risk (I recommend that more for the Wii, as I'm much less worried about that).

Pretty great. Someone might have said before that this is the first MP map at night, but, no, Halo PC had the first nighttime map, called "Gephyrophobia" (which is the fear of crossing bridges). Look it up, pretty cool map. I've wanted a nighttime map for THE LONGEST TIME, so I am super ultra stoked about this "new" map. And Lockout was one of my faves, so it's cool to see it remad

amatecha

Hey, I suppose this is as good a place as any to ask a question. My 360 has had problems connecting to LIVE for months now, but the last time I actually used the console was back when the whole system was screwed up (so I figured it was just the servers), but now I realize that it's still messed up. Any help would be appreciated.

Here's the problem: I connect to Xbox LIVE just fine. The "connection test" goes all the way through with no issues. However, after I connect, the two leftmost blades on the dashboard (the ones that load up with LIVE-related stuff) fail to load. They just keep showing the "loading" symbol forever. Naturally, you need these blades to buy stuff or do friend stuff.

And it's not just the blades, but any buying or friend-related stuff (basically anything that actually uses LIVE) doesn't work. If I try to download the Maps through Halo 3, it stays at 1% forever, and if I access my messages by pressing the center button on the controller, it won't load up voice messages.

But, like I said, the 360 SAYS I'm connected, but nothing works. I know this isn't exactly on-topic, but I figured you Kotakuites could help me out. And besides, these comments are seldom on-topic anyway, right? Thanks in advance.

Spiffyness

Yes LIVE is cheap, but it's just the whole principal of it all, I just find disgusting what MS is doing with all the nickel and diming and other publishers as well. What the games industry is becoming makes me a sad panda. :(

Lokku

If that is what you consider an unnecessarily low comment than you don't have very thick skin. All you've proven is that you can't argue your point without just throwing out insults or trying to sound superior.
I don't know why you can't figure this out. Content made by individuals, in their own free time, is generally free content. Why? Because those people usually just make such things for fun.
Companies DO NOT behave like this. If you want free content go get it on the pc from other users. Don't ask why the multi-billion dollar corporation won't spend their time, money, and resources to make something for you, for free, when they could do something else to make a profit.

Demonbird

I love a good debate, and I don't think my opinion is more valuable than others (obviously I think its more accurate, it being mine and all [G]), I just like it to be a bit contextual. As I said to ErskinPig, I have no problem with him continuing to repeat himself on post after post (heck I do it on some subjects, won't deny), but I have an equal right to let him know that not only do I disagree, but I think that the excess repetition only hurts the case being made after awhile.

That, and I did think This Comment was a bit out of line, but I tried to show restraint in my response, whether I succeeded in that is another question...

I do have a tendency to use rhetoric that represents my opinion as objective fact, when in fact I neither think it is nor would do I really want others to feel I think that way, but its a failing, I'll admit ;)

DaiMacculate

@Lokku: Heh, you don't have to tell me to hate MS man, I really really do, Mac user from back in the 80s among many, many other reasons ;)

Its not my fault they bought one of my favorite devs, or that they persuaded Team Ninja to release Ninja Gaiden games to them first...thats why I bought the first Xbox, not because of Halo, I tried it and found it cool but not system-worthy (like Resistance, great game but not 500 bucks great), I was and Xbox 1 HATER...then I played Ninja Gaiden.

Bought a used Xbox 2 days later, along with that and Otogi, never regretted any of that purchase, because both those games are really fun. I still played my GC and PS2 far more, but neither had those games, not to mention Halo 2, which was far better than the first simply for having real MP.

The problem with user created DLC in this context is that it requires a PC, consoles will never have the peripherals/apps required, and shouldn't IMO. Forge is about the best that can be hoped for at the moment. It remains to be seen if Sony will actually effect real change for the better, I won't argue against your basic point that MS should not be allowed to set the pricing and depth of the market...

Like I already said to ErskinPig way up at the top of the page, there are plenty of great examples of DLC that is way overpriced (Guitar Hero) and so horrific it should never be downloaded (Bullet Witch), I just think this is not one of them.

Particularly since it will be free eventually, a point that has been mostly lost in all this ;)

DaiMacculate

It would be great if we were able to download free user created content, and there was a method of making user created content, but right now there isn't.

800 is too much for any dlc. i dont demand that it be free, just reasonable enough not to make me question the purchase. im not buying a new pair of pants here, dont make me think about it that hard.

especially when so much chaff is thrown in with the wheat. in this pack, for example, the only map i want is avalanche - since i only play large games. why not charge me 150 points for that one map. instead they bundle three together when ill rarely play 2 of them and wont like it when i do.

i havent bought the mass effect dlc despite being a big fan of the game. because of the way theyve implemented it, via playing through the game again, im not going to play through 5 different times to experience 5 different dlc they release over the next few years. ill wait until theyre all out, even if thats a week before mass effect 2, and play through all at once.

dlc doesnt have to be painful, but they keep making it so for various reasons. as a concept im still not convinced its worth waiting for it to be polished. i rarely see real success stories with it.

red

I like you man, but just because you don't agree with Lokku or is no reason to question his participation in this thread. That comes off as arrogant, and your opinion is no more or less important or 'right' than his as you seem to be implying.

Sorry if you're not, but that is how your comments have been coming off through the entire thread.

And to add to the discussion, no, I realize content over a closed system like Live can never be free, but it doesn't have to cost so much either. Corporations are always trying to get as much money as they can out of consumers (see: Guitar Hero II's DLC), and it should be up to consumers to do the opposite - try to pay the least amount of money they can. That creates a nice happy balance and is as close to 'fair' as the world is probably gonna get. That's the joy of a free market. I think it is a good idea to wait til the packs are free to lower sales. Who knows, of course that could backfire and make them charge more to 'recoup' costs, or just not make it free eventually. Don't know til you try I guess. /opinion

ca$h

Maybe people want old maps because a lot of the new ones suck. Lockout was an incredibly fun and solid map. I'd rather have it remade in halo 3 than have to go back to halo 2, with its devastated player base, just to play on it. A midship remake is probably in the works too. There is no problem with bringing back old things that were awesome.

Demonbird

I blame all the kids on the bungie forums demanding old maps back. Really? You'd really rather have an old map that you could STILL PLAY ONLINE IN HALO 2 than a new and original map that might be better than a map that was developed for a game FOUR YEARS AGO?

It looks great and I'm sure it's fine, but I feel like Standoff, from the Heroic Map Pack, is one of the best MP maps I've ever played in Halo. It makes me sad to wonder what we have missed out on because everybody demanded a remake of Lockout. Especially if I am going to pay $10 for it. And I will. Because I wipe my ass with $10. But seriously. Let's start demanding Originality instead of demanding that they regurgitate content.

Am I the only one able to see the irony there? People are pissed that Rainbow Six Vegas 2 is so similar to the first Vegas. So they get on the ubisoft forums and bitch and moan. Then they jump over to bungie.net and demand a remake of Chiron TL-34. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?

Slothboy

@KingDavid73: Guardian was close, but still not quite the same as Lockout, more curvy geometry in it for one.

I'm not surprised its another remake, but thats not a big problem either; as far as I'm concerned below a certain size all FPS deathmatch levels can basically be considered remakes/rehashes of ones from older games, there are only so many basic room layouts and such that work for multiplayer DM. Halo 2 had 2 or 3 maps that could easily be considered rehashes of Marathon 2 maps, Foundation is just the most obvious (Thunderdome), but since so few Halo players have played Bungie's older FPS games it went unnoticed for the most part.

DaiMacculate
