So what, a limited edition of a system sold out prior to launch. OMG, so did the Blue Dragon Xbox 360 in Japan, that means the Xbox 360 is pwning Japan!!! Wait, no that isnt right.

2 logical reasons it is sold out. 1, people are waiting for this game to actually buy the system. The same thing happened in the US with Halo. People waited for Halo to be released to buy the system (dont compare the Halo Edition 360, because that was not limited in any sense, and was over produced). 2, the system is limited. I would guess a limit of anywhere from 50k to 100k, and these sold out places are just the ones taking pre orders. Not all brick and mortar stores take pre orders. So, it isnt completely sold out, but it will go quick (mainly to ebay re sellers though).

The only reason for that argument I can see would be the 360 still having a 60% larger userbase (17.6 million against 10.9 million PS3s sold according to [vgchartz.com]). But to complete that argument, the Wii would be the real MGS seller (22.8 million). So I agree, it's a silly argument.

MGS has the best storyline of any game series ever, imo. To anyone who hasn't played them, they may seem lame at first sight, but the story and MGS universe is better than most film franchises.

Why do people hate MGS2? Because of Raiden? He was gay but the gameplay was WAY better and more refined than MGS1. Snake/Raiden moved better, smarter AI, 1st-person shooting, the ability to roll, hanging from ledges, etc. Some many great elements in MGS originated in MGS2. The story was insanely confusing, but it was still great, and had a great cliffhanger with the Patriots. MGS2 is underrated. MGS3 is the best though.

I don't get many strategy RPG's but I get Disgaea and Fire emblem because I like them. It's not about the genre, the polish or the demographic. It's about the feel and style of the game. If I like how the game plays and the style interests me then it won't matter what genre it is. I play almost any kind of game but never care about anything other than how well it performs itself.

Anyway I seem to be talking circles. About MGS4, I do agree with you I just don't think it'll pass the Wii sales or sell too many extra consoles.

Mostly, the game-play videos I've seen, but also what I've heard about the quirkiness of Kojima's previous work. It seems to have a totally different feel to most "shooters" I've played, and (by the sounds of it) will have a story that's vastly different to anything else I've played. It might end up being as convoluted as all shit, but it still has me intrigued.

I'll bite. It's moving a special edition system in Japan.

This means nothing for the the rest of the world who don't get this bundle and for whom the console is often quite a bit more expensive.

Sony always does well in Japan for these kind of banner launches and to use that as incontrovertible evidence that MGS is a system-seller is a bit of a stretch.

Both games are good, in terms of playability and game design, but I think while Halo is superior in terms of main game play, the Metal Gear series absolutely trumps in it's narrative aspect, raising philosophical questions about us as humans.

It's deep, I know, and to some extent pretentious, but many games can tie good game play to an alright story, few games can resonate with people on such an emotional level.

Either way, I'mma gonna enjoy MGS4, hope they fix the mess that was MGS2's story.

MGS4, while not having the installed (read that as casual) fanbase, may get as big as halo 3 hype-wise. think about it like this: all anyone has heard in regard to the PS3 is "wait until MGS4 and final fantasy 13" for about 2-3 years. sure, snake isn't pasted on crap-tasting mt. dew bottle labels, but the hype is there. it's on everyone's mind. sony loyalists are swearing up and down that is game will be the second coming of christ. microsoft fans say that there is no way the game can be a success on the other system, all the while, they rub their crystals together, hoping that the game that can't possibly sell on the rival system, will get ported sometime in the next decade.

360 owners are aiding in the hype for the linchpin in the PS3 lineup. all the talk and stories of ports and latent PS3 and sony bashing and how "there's no way this game has enough of a fanbase to make it a success"...

Yes Ocelot is trying to take over the world and build outer heaven so? For christ sake he is part liquid and that was his plan already in MGS1 plus Ocelot always played his own games to get something good out of it for himself. Plus whats the problem with remade versions of the Foxhound team from MGS1? They where so far the best enemys ever and somehow after killing them you where not really happy about it.

At all the tag line of MGS is that history is repeating itself and if the story is as emotional as the one in MGS1 after killing some of the bosses like sniper wolf or the MGS3 ending plus most of the questions are answered then I really don`t care if there are nano machines and 300 small Metal Gears instead of one big one (I still hope that at the end the old Metal Gear Rex from MGS1 is playable at least they showed him in the trailer with Snake in it) as long as the qualaty of the Story is as good as in MGS1 or MGS3 (even MGS2 had some good times). And that`s for me the big difference to Halo 3 you just kill evrything and don`t care about any of the characters you kill or comrades which are die.

Maybe MGS4 can not live up to the hype, but I`m at least sure that it will be better in terms of Story and building up a emotional link between the player and characters no matter if "good" or "bad" guy and not just about shooting at evrything that moves.

MGS3 was supposed to do that with 2, but it did not. All I got was that Eva was a slut, naked snake is a bad ass, Ocelot is Boss' son and she gave her life for her orders and the dude " the cloned raiden from" is super gay with Volgin. I also learned that poor johnny will NEVER have a happy ending.

Despite the smaller install base of Xbox compared to PS and PS2, the worst selling game in the Halo series still sold better than the two worst selling Metal Gear games. And the two best selling Halo games sold better than the two best selling Metal Gear games.
Sales of the series took a huge dive with Snake Eater for some reason. Did the series' popularity drop off? Were too many people displeased with MGS2 to buy MGS3?

Whatever the case may be, it doesn't look like MGS4 has much of a chance of outselling Halo 3 (not that it should matter, anyways).

@SAKY: Well, if you don't consider the incredible amount of marketing and the substantially low sales that pushed less consoles than you'd imagine, it didn't I suppose...I'm not saying anything against the game, just how it was hyped and the relatively pathetic impact it had. Outselling the Wii barely for a month or so isn't exactly a success when that game is the nail that you hang your console brand on.

@ManjiKengo: I wouldn't be too fast to make that claim. The PS3 has been selling fairly well *without* its heavy hitters. They are still to come and a few months away. Let's talk in July again about that, because it's nothing to argue over or proclaim. Unless you're an analyst. In which case I wouldn't care :P

I would have agreed with you 12 months ago. But I've never played a MGS game before and I'm hyped for this one. I have a PS3, but GT is what I bought it for. Plus your comment could easily be attributed to Halo. They're both "system sellers", but not everyone is interested in that particular game.

If I recall correct it was only slightly more then the Wii in that month plus as usual the Wii was fast out of stock. Fact is those what 8 million copies of Halo 3 didn`t had much of an impact of the overall units of 360. Really the numbers where something like 600-800k that`s a lot for a month, but only 300-500k more then in the month before with a lot of better games to come soon for black friday. At all that`s not much compared to the first two weeks the game had something like 3.5 million copies soled so at least 3 million of the people had already a 360 and only 500k bought a 360 for the game I don`t think thats hard to beat for Sony. Maybe they don`t beat that with MGS4, but there are other games to come and in my opinion they are all better then Halo 3, it`s just a shame that Halo 3 sold so many copies there are a lot better games out on the 360 and they sell way less.

Shame it isn't true. 10.94M should be around where the ps3 sits worldwide. If vgchartz is actually saying how many total have been SOLD and not shipped then the ps3 has sold more than halo 3 coming in at 7.45m.

It's still impressive that 1 game has sold almost as many copies as a system has sold consoles.

This gen, everything seems to be on a bigger, slower scale than usual for the PS. The plan of having the PS3 run a 10 year cycle seems to influence a lot of the strategies as well. Yes. I read somewhere and I think people here know this already that this is Kojima's last MGS game. There was a post here concerning the next game he's working on. It's not MGS related. Still, if this sells like er HOTCAKES! as it looks like it'll be. Maybe the Konami suits will hog tie him until he agrees to make another one.

I really hope he doesn't crap all over the plot. Sure a few far-fetched things here and there are ok. But MGS2 level of convulsion? I'd rather hear Paula Abdul talk while she's drunk! That's saying something...=D

From a marketing standpoint though, this is great news for Konami. I think they're following the Wii example of limiting supply quantity so much that demand soars. I bet they're holding back an extra batch of limited editions consoles for launch.
