Good. I don't have any problems with people who actually play the games and have a pretty high gamerscore. But to actually use hacked gamesaves, not even owning the disc for certain games (I have seen this) is just stupidly lame. What's the point of having a 600k gamerscore that you did not earn?

No guilty conscience here. In 15 years of gaming I never once cheated in a MP game. Never saw the point of it. I imagine it's kind of like using cheats in a single player game just for the hell of it. It's fun for about 30 minutes but after that it becomes dull because the game no longer holds a challenge.

@Madeira: Agreed on the "gamming," too. My comments pertained strictly to Live, since it's a pay-for service and, you know, umm, uhh, I'm an unabashed Achievement whore. :D It takes time to collect them, so I don't want someone like tei getting them unfairly if I had to get them the usual way.

I also agree with some of the stuff higher up in this thread regarding how Microsoft should do more to police the bigotry on Live so that I can actually plug in my headset from time to time. I currently don't do it, given my dislike of the Hooting Dickoles that make up the majority of the Live user base.

But again, banning racists and homophobes hurts Microsoft since it means lost revenue for every account they ban. Thus, it's extremely unlikely things will change. C'est la vie.

I suppose I could run down a laundry list of games that have hacks/cheats. Going back to the original Quake to WoW, R6, CS, I think you get where I'm going. While I have personally laughed at times to "BooM HeadShoT!", it can get annoying when you realize that a person is using a hack vs. skill or glitching a map or exploit.

But I do agree with the drama queen thing. As I have also had a good laugh at the people who get repeatedly "owned" as it were, then yell "OMG YOU ARE SUCH A HACK" or whatever when clearly they just suck.

All I was saying is cheating or exploiting can affect people's enjoyment of a game. Using and being a modder myself, I have changed things in a game or re-painted a reticle. That type of thing I don't consider a cheat as it has no effect on another player, the way a script or the like can, if you follow me.

Thats what is wrong about hardcore games: Is morally wrong to write a enhanced hud that give unfair advantage. Hardcore games convert all games to e-sports.

But games are still games. Hardcores get the thing too seriously and kill the fun.
To me, is more fun a unbalanced game than a balanced one. Most PvP games start with a overpowered class that is after a few months nerfed, killing the fun.
We are not medieval knights fighting in a equal way.

For me they're goals to shoot towards. I don't think I would've stuck with Run To The Hills are Hard Drums or GG&HT on Expert Guitar if it weren't for the fact that they were the only songs keeping me from a few achievements.

That and going solo through the Endless Setlist. There's two motivations for me to try something or not to give up when I'm struggling. 1) It unlocks content. 2) Achievement.

I've found that they keep me playing games I may have otherwise given up or set aside. As well as encouraged me to try new methods of playing (or new characters I may have otherwise not used).

@TRT-X: Your account on MS's end would still show gameplay time in those games. This isn't cheating. The issue is when a player spends an abnormaly short time playing a game, when someone is continually transferring accounts, or when someone sells their Live account.

For me, gamerscore only matters amongst the people on my friends list (I don't populate it with random idiots I meet in a game - good people only!), especially amongst those who, like me, often get a game when it just comes out. It's an unspoken competition, especially in multiplayer, but when one of us calls out, "Just got an achievement!", you can pretty much feel the hate flowing through the headset (albeit friendly hate), followed by the need to step up your game and get more bagooks than the other guy. The overall score means nothing, but the achievements for a particular title is where it counts.

@TRT-X: A valid point, but game usage is tied into a gamertag. For your scenario to be valid, the console would be linked up to live in both cases (to upload the updated gamertag and to redownload it back at home)

No matter which system the game is played on, the fact the game was played is still registered. The only workaround I can see is if you do not access live at all, at which point it wouldn't really matter.

I don't. But the games I play online right now are RB and GH primarily. So not seeing "beat game on Expert" could mean anything from they haven't even tried to being stuck on Green Grass & High Tides (one song from finishing it)

@Dioxen: If someone has a full gamut of achievements for a game but have never played it beyond putting it in the 360 then something is very suspicious.

Here's an interesting (and quite realistic) scenario. I was over at a friend's place this weekend, I transfered my Gamertag to their 360 while I was over there and a bunch of us played Halo and Rock Band. I got a number of achievements in both.

Then I went home and recovered my GT on my "home" 360. Halo 3 has never been used on that machine...yet I now have roughly 450 points from it on my GT.

This same friend didn't have a 360 until after Christmas this year. But another guy in the apartment did. So his Gamertag was originally created on one machine and then was transfered over once he got his own.

So now there's roughly 2000 points worth of achievements in his tag that are from games that have never graced his box.

Is that cheating?

They don't change the motto, or your gamertag. The only thing that will change is the gamer score and the added section at the bottom. MS will not change your motto to I am a dirty cheater.

I am fairly certain that the image above is a mock up not showing that Microsoft changes any of your gamer tag info, but instead showing what the "What happened to their gamer score?" dialog box looks like.

But feel free to freak out without actually looking into the issue, that's totally sweet.

@tei: Not really. Live keeps detailed information about usage statistics. People being banned are those that have earned achievements with means other than playing the game itself. Reading the "Find out more" page would tell you that.

I personally think this is fanfuckintastic. For the longest time it was a worthless deal, the achievement.
But now...
it's only slightly less useless.

I find it's a step in the right direction, but personally I use the achievements as a nice gauge as to whether or not I'll actually play a game long enough. Single Player achievements are my focus at times simply to give me something to do. I think the problem here was when people took being a douche to another level and made that achievement that was so hard to get seem worth less.
Consider it the whole, "if everything is art then nothing is" concept, only brought to where you enjoy yourself.
If any schmoe can get certain achievements, then what did anyone achieve. It keeps gaming competetive and still enjoyable. That's what achievements should be. I mean, anyone here NOT gauge an "opponent" based on how well he or she accomplished particular achievements and whether they go certain ones before or after a particular order you did? Just some food for thought.
