No I don't live in Japan, yes I do watch Japanese news, don't ask. Incidentally, three other reasons Japanese news is good (um when watched from a certain viewpoint):

(1) Typhoons are awesome, as is heavy snow. (We don't get either in my country.)

(2) Endless features on cherry blossoms / autumn colour / first sign of spring / etc which are pretty much THE EXACT SAME EVERY YEAR. (Actually pretty much the same is true of the typhoon footage I guess...)

(3) Really shitty CGI reconstructions, I'm sorry this is a bit tasteless but the one where that train crashed a few years back was just quality. And they used an Aphex Twin soundtrack to it! wtf.

"otaku" has been a derisive term for about 30 years, long before the media went American-style sensational. I think the term evolved more or less organically, and the media just reflected that later. It was not really a term in mainstream use for many years, so you wouldn't have seen it on a news broadcast in its early days.

Wikipedia references a 1983 essay as the first mainstream use of the term (long before the "Otaku Killer" you speak of), but that was probably also a reaction to a term that was already in fairly wide underground use.

It's a word that's been in use for a long time and has always had negative connotations.

The government must always show his real social background and then mostly you see things like. He was bullyed by his classmates and such and the mostly his real motive for his actions.

@Gwynna: Yeah Japan is totally about following the crowd. That and theres so much coorporate incest going on over here pretty much all the stations are connected in some way or another. So to be on top you gotta report what everyone else does, whoever does the reporting first though wins is what it seems. The same went on when Japan had a load of its reporters over in Iraq. It was pretty much a "gold rush" for whichever station could get the coverage the fastest.

That was information given from the apparent situation by a private contractor who was hired to watch over one of the Japanese reporters as his PSD.

Based off of that and how they do things here, its not suprising. With news reporting in general its the same anywhere, but for Japan it seems to be an even bigger stressing point put on the reporters by the news stations back home since the whole situation of the JSDF being in Iraq was a big political problem which had caused mass unrest with the people, and the news stations Im guessing had pressure from the govt to make sure as much news came out to help quell the fires back home.

The main difference to the US is, I think, that theres no moral crusaders or 'family' groups driving media anti-gaming bias here. All the media outlets just seem to jump on the bandwagon. Its like an internal memo goes out to all the major news and talk programs.
