@Barf#1: yeah, and that's the problem... they patched up the benign hacks, but some of the worse ones have not been. I was playing a match last night where one of the members of the other team had very obviously been using an aim-assist. Everyone (well at least those with mics) on my team were reporting that every time this guy killed them, it was ALWAYS a one shot kill no matter what. Suffice to say, everyone on that team left the server as soon as the match was over. A small-scale example of how cheating kills an online game.

@SoulPunch: The same argument could be said with why should you pay for something that should have been in the game to begin with? With TF2 Valve are adding things post-release totally for free, and it's an incredibly popular game on PC. Same with Battlefield 1942, a very popular game that had probably about half a dozen maps totally free with new weapons and vehicles included added during it's years of popularity. Unreal Tournament 2004 had about a bazillion maps added post-release, totally for free, this was also a very popular game that people were happy to buy. Just because console gamers are now used to paying exorbitant prices for a few average Halo 3 or Call of Duty 4 maps, that doesn't change a long established element of PC gaming where you buy a game and then can download as many extra official and user-created maps as you want without paying a cent, as it's all about supporting the community, not making a bunch of greedy executives happy.

@ErskinPig: As far as I can see looking at it right now, THQ and Activision games on Steam all cost around the same as the ridiculously expensive boxed copies here in Australia. I bought TF2 on Steam for US$30 and paid around AU$33, whereas I'd be paying over $80 to get CoD4 for example.

But back on topic, they are stupid for ever thinking that this will be successful on PC. If about 8 people bought the little downloadable packs for a hugely popular game in Battlefield 2, they're not going to do it for CoD4 which has a minuscule PC community compared to the console versions. It has nothing to do with piracy, 95% of those pirating CoD4 are simply playing singleplayer, hardly any of them would be searching around for those cracked servers to play online. PC gamers download added content to their games for free, it's always been like this and will continue like this.

I generally don't buy into expansions, booster packs or multi-player DLC because I find it generally divides the community. Trying to play on the maps from Battlefield 2: Armored Fury can be difficult sometimes. Relic did it best with Opposing Fronts; you can join any online game with maps and armies from the expansions but you cannot create games on or use armies from said expansion without a purchase. And yeah it's a multiple GB patch, but it is free. Valve also manages to provided free content to extend the life of its games, such as Team Fortress 2.

As far as I'm concerned there is no reason to charge for these maps other than to make money, it's a bad business model. If they want to make more money keep the price of the core game at the standard $50 for a much longer period of time and provide "extended" content for free.

Also a lot of tinfoil hat fanboy-ism that has people speculating microsoft paid them off? I guess none of those people are developers, or know developers. They don't have to deal with the ps3's completely different memory management (ie. your level fits in memory on 360 with 5% to spare and runs fine on pc of course, but is somehow 10% over on the ps3?), and sony's completely different certification process? They've never needed to deal with getting a package ready for two completely different distribution systems with limited manpower and time?

I love how everyone thinks that Activision is screwing the consumer by charging for additional content. The company's objective is to make money, not give you shit for free.

Too many people equate free stuff with sticking it to the man, and paid-for content with "screwing the consumer". Sometimes, kids, things just cost money. Like using human resources to develop new maps for an already-released game instead of a new $60 retail title.

And don't start with that "oh, giving things away builds brand loyalty!" Despite what Valve might think, the average gamer is not making buying decisions based on what game has free downloadable content. I think a lot of DLC is overpriced, but the market will sort that out.

@GoonieGooGoo:COD4 is the best 360 game I've played easily, topping any Ghost recon/Rainbow 6/everything else, and I loved those games.

Prestige is a pretty silly idea, yet I'm already on my 5th time through and I plan to keep playing while all my wii games and other 360 games sit unplayed. I think that the competition from multiplayer is just so fun that I may as well sit through prestige modes since I"m pumping that kind of time in. I'm also pretty damn good for all my efforts, and it's much more rewarding than Halo 3(I know since I just popped it in tonight for a few games, it just doesn't hold up.)

Point is, I"m pumping hours in to this game anyway, prestige is a decent way to keep me hooked. It's somewhat like leveling in WoW.

I'll probably buy these maps since I really love this game, but it does bother me how the PC scene is collapsing. I think if PC hardware were better standardized and made more affordable, it would be better off.

Yet another reason I'm thinking of jumping ship to the 360 version. The main reason being the rampant cheating that is STILL going on in the ps3 version. They fixed some of the hacks (like allowing people to change the colour/look of their tags) but left others in (like aim assist). Nothing kills an online gaming community faster than cheaters.

@lasttimeyouaskedme: I can see how DLC can be viewed as stealing. For a recent example look at Army of Two and the whole having to buy weapons developed for the game before it was released but was held back in order to make some extra mad money.

But in Call of Duty 4's case, the maps were created after the games release and it's not like Infinity Ward held back any content for a later release. It lengthens the games life while we wait for Treyarch (I Think) to murder Call of Duty 5. If anything Rainbow Six Vegas 2 is stealing. Charging $60 for a glorified update of a previous installment plus the addition of new bugs and broken online play?

Anyway, for those who aren't happy about having to pay $10 for new maps look at this way. When Gamestop sells a used copy of a game the dev/publisher will never see a dime from that sale . By charging money for a map pack they at least have a chance to see some money come back to them through that used copy. Especially for online heavy games. And yes, I know there are holes to this theory but it makes me feel better about it okay?

People didn't pirate COD4 b/c they expected IW to charge for new maps, they did it b/c they didn't want to pay and it was easy for them to avoid paying. So who knows, maybe they won't bother making COD6 for PC. IW didn't start a "vicious cycle" but they can certainly put an end to it.

There's no need to make people wait on one system while they're working on converting the maps for another. This may have something to do w/the infrastructure. They may have to do extra work or use their own servers to support the content on PSN. Consider this one of the costs of getting PSN for free. No matter what the issue is, I doubt IW just wants to bully PS3 players around. Get Netflix, watch some Blurays. That's what I'm doing w/my PS3.

Once again, it can't be reiterated enough, most Dev's want to give it out for free; blame your MSFT and Sony.

However, the mentality is probably waning a bit seeing how the Devs do make some money off the map packs.

Paying for maps on the PC?, thats a knife to the throat to a FPS geared company.

No, sometimes I get a 360 game, sometimes a PS3 game. I've got Rock Band for the PS3, and CoD4 for the 360. I still don't like seeing these wide time gaps between identical content release.

@jun581: I don't mind timed exclusives so much, but for some reason this just seems silly. They are map packs, it's not like holding the releases to come out the same time is going to cause some huge delay like it could for the actual game release.

Yes, I don't why the PS3 is getting screwed over all the time. I own both and it's annoying when I can get something on my 360 but have to wait for the PS3 version (like Rock Band tracks to name just one thing).

Oh, and IW - good luck if you're gonna try to charge for those maps on the PC. You're gonna need it.

I've still not bought this game, despite it's acclaim, because it remains one of the most expensive games on Steam. $69.95. I can buy pretty much EVERY SINGLE GAME iD HAS EVER MADE FOR THE SAME PRICE!

I think you overestimate the significance of this game on the PC Activision. People simply don't think it's worth that premium, even if you believe your own hype.
