Any special edition of a game should only be 5 or at the VERY MOST, 10 dollars more. You can't charge people 20-30 dollars more for a nice sleeve that comes off or a semi-cool tin box with previews for other crap you want to sell. And why in the blue hell are they making people pay for extras like documentaries? I can remember, as soon as the LAST generation, games having documentaries and dvd style features available for the full retail price. Nobody was charged extra for that crap.

Of course they only include 4 chapters of the MGS graphic novel in the limited edition. Of course they only include 4 episodes of the DMC anime in the collector's edition. They want you to buy the rest of the novel, the rest of the episodes, the rest of their crap, etc. They aren't selling you anything worth the extra money. It's just an extended advertisement for their other products. It's almost like buying a DVD with twice as many trailers before you get to the title menu.

I don't know who the hell came up with the idea of these dumbass art books but it's completely stupid. How about scanning the artwork and letting people view it in-game as a dvd style extra instead? O yea and then not charging EXTRA for it, because that would actually be cheaper for the developer/publisher? I mean are there serious gamers out there who have stacks and stacks of these art books? Do you guys seal them and put them next to your mint condition star wars action figures that you collect? Where on earth is the demand for this crap coming from? I mean if you're going to charge that much extra, seriously, put something that seriously makes it worth it. Rockstar is awfully close to getting it right, by including a goddam duffel bag and safety deposit box with the special edition of GTA IV.

Seldom are these limited/special/collector's editions worth it. I hope one of these days, some idiot money grubbing publisher proves me wrong but I'm pretty doubtful about that ever happening.

And for the record, MGO should have been finished by now and either on the same disc as MGS 4 or the same blu ray dvd case. Then again, we should be used to getting nickel and dimed by Kojima and Konami. Next year, when MGS 4: Sons of the guns of the subsistent patriots comes out, in addition to a better version of MGS, MGS fans will have just have wished that they waited. I'm getting the MGS4 bundle and I'm pretty sure that'll be good enough for most new ps3 owners. The regular game will be enough for most MGS fans as well.

If you think about it, it's not a terrible deal, though. You get a sound track ($10?), Two making-of disks ($5?), four issues of the graphic novel ($5-10?, though I don't know how large an issue is...) plus the artbook pre-order bonus. Add in the additional shipping costs for the larger, heavier metal cases, and it about evens out.
