@Zer0Force: I'd say that is the absolute least of Microsoft's concerns with community created content. People have been doing questionable things with Microsoft products for years. There are a multitude of protections that they already have in place to protect themselves legally from what their users do with their services... with 360 specifically, they already shield themselves from user actions on XBL reflecting back on them in a liability sense.

No, what Microsoft really dislikes about community created content is more likely two other factors:

1) There is no profit to be made in content you can't control. Console manufacturers make money in an entirely different model than the old PC model. Sell consoles at a loss or relatively low profit and make up the difference in software licensing. User content means games with longer lifespans, means fewer games purchased. Right now, MS is in the sweet spot with game turnover with their install base... they have no need to sell their users games with longer lifespans and a mass of DLC they can't charge for. I mean, hell, they charge for user pictures still because people are dumb enough to buy them, what is the motivation in supporting free content when you've got people willing to pay?

2) Security issues that can arise from someone leaking harmful DLC. Whether legally liable to consumers for problems that arise out of their choices or not, MS could have a shit-storm on their hands if someone figures out a way to get a virus or other trojan into their otherwise closed system. They already have enough trouble with people trying to hack their way into XBL for any number of reasons without opening up the possibility of them being somewhat responsible for dispersing harmful software through their closed system.

That isn't to say they are "bad, evil, etc"... they're a business. As long as people will pay for the system they offer as it is with little fuss, there is no reason to change. They've currently got a closed system with regular subscribers paying for nearly every piece of DLC with minimal risk to the security of their service... why change if it's working at the moment?

@EmilioBuono: they are already weapon mods, new game modes and such.

There are at least 30 maps available, two new 3rd person camera mods (to play it like RE4 or Gears from behind the character) a Stealth mod just like the predators, a shield mod, jet pack mod at least one new vehicle mod.

@Akmed: use Winrar to decompress the file. Take the userdata file that shows up and put in on a thumb drive. Put the thumb drive in Ps3 with UTIII running. Goto My content/ import content...poof...let the game do its thing and you're done

I wonder if any lawsuits are in the making.

Remember when Marvel went after the Freedom Force gaming community? The community was using the mod tools from Freedom Force to make Marvel characters for that awesome superhero RTS.

They couldn't do anything to Irrational games, because none of the designs were supplied by the company... so Marvel informed Irrational that they will go after it's modding community, if they don't convince them to stop 'infringing' on their copyrights.

It seemed like a baseless threat, as no money was changing hands, but Irrational pleaded with the community to stop making public, the creators designs that resembled Marvel characters. Some did, some didn't, and Marvel contacted the ones who didn't. Eventually, modding of Marvel characters was taken off of fansites.

That's why I'm wondering this... mostly because of Master Chief, and Cloud.

Mods are awesome. It's great to see the console guys finally getting in on some of the freebie action, let's hope that Microsoft release their vice like grip on Live and allow some of the user generated stuff to poliferate.

It does however, mean that people are less likely to pay for shitty DLC, when they can get better stuff for free.

Perfect Temple (remake of the Temple from Goldeneye and Perfect Dark) is awesome in UTIII. Orbital Deconstruction, Downpour, FragPipe2k8, Harbor and Tiberium are all kick ass maps as well. These fan made maps are as good as the Epic maps and in some cases better. Awesome support. Brings me back to the days of playing UT99 and 2k4 on PC.

@Eon.: Look at it this way...I just played a game of Deathmatch on UTIII on PS3 with Master Chief from Halo, Spawn and Marcus from Gears of War, on a remake of the Shipment map from CoD4. It all ran without a hitch and it was all free top quality mods. I can add the 3rd person camera mutator so I can play UTIII re4/GoW style from behind the back. How is that not seven shades of awesome? The best maps from CoD4 and Halo3 I can either wait for the fan mod or build it myself. Even the weapons and models from CoD4 and Halo3 can be added. It's limitless. But this is all old hat to anyone that's been playing the PC versions of UT and Quake. I'm excited because I can get the best of the PC world on my console and don't have to worry about upgrading the CPU or the GPU or RAM.

Now...Modders...can forget Cloud, I never like that bastard anyways...Can I get Samus? Can metroid fans get some UTIII love?

@pot3ntial2suck: I hear what you're saying but, this has been going on since the QuakeII-QuakeIII days. It's not going to stop. I remember Quake II had some of the best mods you could get. I've played matches that had Papa Smurf, Yoshi, Darth Vadar, Optimus Prime (that actually transformed and had his sound effects) it goes on and on.

This is great stuff and I've seen at least one CoD4 map remake as well as some UT99 and QuakeII maps. It makes the 360/PS3 mappack releases for other games look silly by comparison in many ways. Fans can get a full complement of maps right now, free for download as well as mutators, character mods, vehicle mods and weapon and armor mods. If this isn't great fan support I don't know what is.

Played Warhawk and UTIII all day yesterday. Mostly UTIII for the mods. Thanks again to Neil for sending me the message about these. Can't wait until someone makes Samus with various suits for UTIII. How about a remake of The Temple or the Facility from Goldeneye, Facing Worlds from UT99 would be awesome for classic CTF matches.

Has anyone beening DLing the fan mod stages? There's a C&C Tiberium stage that's awesome, Downpour has got to be one of the best DM/TDM stages I've ever played bar none, Fragpipe 2k8 is a great update to the Quake II map and Flatmap(?) is sniper's heaven. I've heard that Orbital Deconstruct is awesome but for some odd reason it gets stuck in the load sequence as does Tokay(?) Towers.

Damn game has sucked up enough of my time without getting to grief all the other kiddies by looking like Master Chief as I frag them. :D

Now, if I can just get Epic to update the code so that 3rd party maps can download to other player's client machines, we'll be in business. Gettin' kinda worn out on the same dozen DM maps, and buggy voice chat / lack of clan support is killing motivation to play team modes... come to think of it, Epic can fix that too.

But past that, quite happy to see mod support slowly moving forward like this. Can't wait to see how time rolls on... could end up being quite cool if fan-made total conversions are possible.

@pot3ntial2suck: Knowing Bungie and their reputation with their fans (Red Vs. Blue, anyone?), I'm pretty sure they'd let it slide.

Microsoft...depends on how the rights situation for Halo was worked out between Bungie and M$oft. Since no profit is being made off the mods, they probably won't care much either.

Epic won't care about the GoW mods since GoW is another Epic title. That is, unless they decide to release their own GoW mods, and charge for them.

All in all, I don't think anyone is going to care, really.

@ryivanV2: hopefully, seeing how well the PS3 UT3 mods have gone for Sony, PR-wise, will persuade MS to loosen the reins a bit for Epic, who after all they owe big time for Gears of War, IMO.

@dexterr: Actually, there were 198k people playing Team Swat in Halo 3 when I logged in Friday Night, there are still a few who play Halo.

I really wonder what the possible copyright infringement issues are with this. Bungie and Microsoft have the copyrights to master Chief and the ability to create, duplicate, and broadcast his likeness. So, Epic might be liable if they don't stop people from creating copyrighted mod characters. Or, it might be more like a Napster/Kazaa situation where Bungie would have to target the users that were doing it with lawsuits. In any case, they would have a strong case in court that this has a financial harm to them (because PS3 users don't need to buy their product to play their character) and I think this story will get a lot more heated in the next few weeks once these mods gain popularity.

Wow, I have to say I am not interested in UT anymore like I used to be (kind of loss interest in time, same thing happened with me and Quake... never played Quake 4 but I played at least 1,000+ of Quake 1 if you include Team Fortress), but these models are damn impressive. I would seriously buy UT3 if a SMBB mod could be created (would probably suffer from less lag too). Although I'm sure Nintendo wouldn't sit on it.

While not newer its still of interest to any gamer, its another sort of "Branching" between all the forms of games as we know it, in this case, PC & Console gaming, we close the gaps, we unify the systems and the games and it works out better for all of us, people don't miss out on cool features just because of the platform they chose.

I got this working this morning, really cool stuff, works flawlessly, played a few rounds as the Crysis nanosuit and my girlfriend as Master Chief. Its great i can do stuff like this with my PS3 so easily, its a shame that there won't be this level of customisation with the 360 version /if/ it gets a release.
