I'll wait to form a better opinion until people hopefully get to play this at E3. But the fact is, Sonic Team has had a horrific post-Genesis software development record. I mean seriously, not only have these guys not made a good 3d Sonic game, they haven't even made a game worth playing in a DECADE AND A HALF. I want Sega hiring at least 10 people just to work on the camera system alone. Every 3d Sonic game has sucked and has a horrendous camera system. Hell, McWhertor doesn't even know what he's talking about. The Secret Rings blew ass too. It was the best sonic rental I had enjoyed in ages and I still wasn't even close to buying that game. Brain-dead gameplay with terrible controls and once again, a demented camera making an appearance.

I'm really hoping that this game gives me a reason to buy anything Sonic related on a console since I've hit puberty. That would be THE DAY.

I say that not because it involved kidnapped princesses (it didn't) but because it was simplicity at its finest. Mad scientist turning all the wildlife into robots? Sonic goes out, kicks ass, and keeps Dr. Robotnik in line until the sequel.

But then the comics came out. And based upon those comics there was a TV show, "Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog." Both were much more serious and created an even deeper canon than those of the original Sonic games. I can't say whether the TV show and comic were horrible, but what I do know is Sega decided to replicate the seriousness of the comics/show when they made the jump to 3D. But alas, such was not meant to be, and Sega struggles to keep its franchise afloat.

Seems their latest entry in the franchise hasn't gotten the picture yet. Too many cutscenes, too little 'vroom, vroom.' Unless they defy all expectations, the only thing we're getting out of this game is the classiest expression on Sonic's face ever.

I shouldn't put it down at the moment, but the whole transformation thing doesn't fit with that video that's going around.

Worst possible scenario, Sonic turns bad in werewolf form, and we're introduced to the "Raiden/Nero" of the series, who we play the game with till the end. o_O

Makes sense in a way. Make in so that it's a 2D sidescroller, plus certain "Sonic and the Secret Ring" style segments. The only thing that can mess up that conversation is bad stage design, corny storyline elements, etc. Gameplay looks to be going in the right direction.

I understand your point about going forwards, but at the same time, that video looks pretty damn fun, and when you have half of the people saying they want a 2D game, and the other half saying they want 3D, why not mix the best elements of both?

Besides which, what makes "3D" contemporary or revolutionary anyway? Some of the most innovative games in this generation aren't 3D (most DS games, many Wii games, Littlebigplanet, etc).

God knows Mario works extremely well in 3D, but that gameplay style hasn't made the 2D gameplay obsolete.

The video makes it look like a cross between Sonic Rivals and Sonic and the Secret Rings... Neither of which I particularly liked, unfortunately, so I'm still on the fence. But there's definitely potential there, and at worst, it won't be plagued by the glitches and camera angle problems of past 3D titles.

The CG Super Sonic looks undoubtedly awesome...but CG cutscenes are one of the two things Sonic's handler's are still doing right...so these few shots are hardly anything to judge the final product on.

I hope the gameplay is more like the first Sonic Adventure, than Secret Rings or next-gen. I hated Secret Rings's on-rails gameplay, and I just downright hated next gen.

If this game is given the proper development time, and comes out in mid 2010 at the earliest, then I would say this one has a shot.

On another note, none of you can people around here can claim that you ceased to care about Sonic a long time ago. The 150+ comments contradict that.

See, in the Japanese versions it was always "Dr. Eggman." That's his original name. In an attempt to make him sound cooler, Sega of America changed the name to "Dr. Robotnik" when the first Sonic the Hedgehog game was brought overseas. However, they later decided that it was more important to keep the names the same. So, they decided to attempt to ease English-speaking characters into the name by, in Sonic Adventure for Dreamcast, keeping his name "Dr. Robotnik" and making "Eggman" his nickname. Later, in Sonic Adventure 2, they made his name full-out "Dr. Eggman" to match with the Japanese version.

Anyways, I hope this is good. If it's a collection of flashy semi-linear levels like the ones for Sonic and Shadow in Sonic Adventure 2, there aren't many ways it can go wrong. Add in a few new abilities (cool stuff, like fast-paced walljumping or something) to make for super-flashy a-ranking runs through levels, and I'm sold.

I'm really digging those shaders and the art design is quality work. I have to agree that the absence of the fluff characters makes it feel closer to a real sonic game than anything that has come out in the past 10 years.

I would really love to see Sonic come back to his former glory. Sonic 2 was the game that got me into consoles back in elementary school and Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles were pure gold. It's a hungry market, SEGA, don't let us starve to death!

Personally, I think SEGA should do with this game what they're doing with Bionic Commando; hype up the release with a 2.5D remake of the original. Now THAT would be sweet!

Yeah it was more a turn of phrase to show that the Sonic games of late have been dreadful, Sonic and the secret of the rings or whatever it was called was like some bizarre experiment into conditioning designed to give people ADD.
A lot of the list on wiki was repeats and I came to the Mario party late as it were. The first Mario game I played was 64,I'd spent the previous 15 odd years piddling around with computers.
Looking at it there are the typing games but nothing really jumps out at me. There are a lot of "appears as" in games, but the Mario as a playable character or themed things don't look to bad.
Care to point out the really awful ones to me? I believe some people even have a soft spot for Mario Paint.

Aren't dreadful? Mario Kart is amazing. In fact, I like MKDS more than most traditional Mario games. But he's been in a lot of horrible crap. Those are actually some of his better games. Even Mario Party. It's because he has been in so much. Once you're in so many games, you're going to accumulate quite a record of trash.

But even though he is whored out the Footy,Golf and kart games aren't dreadful,(I can't speak for the baseball as I've never played it,). They are pretty good solid games, you can't say that for the core Sonic games let alone the other stuff he has been shoved into.

But when they started churning out crappy 3D Sonic game after crappy 3D Sonic game, the series was lost to me. I just don't understand how a company like Nintendo did so well with taking all of their franchises from 2D to 3D, but Sega couldn't manage to do the same with the Sonic series. Sonic Adventure was...alright. This looks like it will be similar. I don't want to say Sonic should have stayed 2D, I definitely think it can be a great 3D franchise but they haven't made a good one.

I don't know, in the last couple of years we've had.
NSMB, a great game.
Mario Strikers, pretty good.
Mario Galaxy, just amazing.
SSMB, Great reviews but as I am in England I haven't played it.
Mario and Sonic at the Olympics,well erm it's got Sonic in it.
Mario Kart has got some good reviews so far but it's to early to tell.
All of these games look worth getting except for one. Can you see a pattern?
Now you tell me,when was the last truly great Sonic game, there are three in that list I would rate as great, with the possible inclusion of MarioKart as a fourth if the reviews so far are a guide.
Yep I'm a bit of a Nintendo fanboy, I'll admit it,(My girlfriend even bought me a sweet Luigi/Peach t-shirt today with "I pulled a princes!" on it,) but that's because the games have been good.
If this was any other franchise people would revile it.
