On the downside, second hand games and consoles (or even dedicated game shops) are thin on the ground here.

The pre-owned market in Britain and France makes me weep with desire. Went to Paris for a few days, and happened to get a hotel slap bang in the middle of the videogame arrondisment - at least a dozen shops where you could buy every game and console going back to NES (and even 2600, if you're so inclined).

In Europe, there are huge differences in salaries between countries. Also, in many countries here real-estates cost a lot, and most people just rent their place. So, their salaries go for paying high taxes/fees, rent, much more expensive electricity,... in the end most people have just $100-$300/mo left afaik.
Feels strange for someone like me to own a PS3 and half a dozen games :P
Maybe thanks to this extreme segmentation, piracy here is OK by the law (as long as one doesn't resell/earn money from it).

It doesn't bother me that a game has to be a year old to be the price i'd prefer to pay as if anything it IMPROVES due to the accumulated patches and addons over that year. It's certainly good to see Sony doing this and as it's common practice there's no way to put a negative spin on it really - when you consider brand new DS games cost £25-£30 and you get very little content or wow factor £20 ps3 games seem like a bargain by comparison.

I only recently picked up a PS3 (£299 40gb) with uncharted and ninja gaiden thrown in from play, I was interested in motorstorm but based on the reviews of it not being that heavy on content felt that that full price was too much. I noticed last week Amazon had cut uk prices on that and resistance to £19.99 at which point I felt it WAS worth the purchase (esp with the updates/addons on PSN).

So it was a very welcome move and I can't wait for more to join it in time as I don't have to own every game in it's week of release as I have too many already on various formats.

And I think Motorstorm is stunning and it's an 'old' game still worth picking up to new PS3 owners of which there will be plenty now BluRay has 'won' the HD war and the console has had and will have more price cuts and great exclusives.

Obv games like GTA4 and GT5 I will be buying asap, the rest can wait for a price cut unless they are really special.

You also need to remember that these prices include outrageous amounts of sales taxes which are completely outside of Sony's control.

I'm not defending anything. I was brought up in the UK and know exactly what it's like paying over the odds for games and electronics, but this is hardly new. In fact, things have gotten significantly better. They used to just swap out the dollar sign for a pound sign.

Erm, the prices are in Euros, not pounds. The exchange rate is 1.57 dollars to the euro, which still leaves these games at $62. But considering us Europeans have been shafted for years, I don't think that's going to change anytime soon.

Either way, converting these prices into dollars is somewhat a pointless exercise at the moment considering how fucked the American economy is at the moment.

Many games *don't have real time weapon change. Have you ever played modern Ninja Gaiden or about any other action game? I like to smack this down every time I see it. That feature was worth talking about, since it was a major change in Genji's gameplay. Most games let you pause to switch in that genre, so you can take a break. It's not new or innovative, but fans of the series were interested to know that. Most people play that title for the kamui time anyway, which a lot of game designers like to ape -- good or bad.
