The save game mechanism was hilarious. You had to interrupt the game with a CTRL-C and then PRINT the value of a couple of variables. You wrote those numbers down. When you restarted the game you would interrupt with CTRL-C again, change the value of those variables to the ones you wrote down, restart the game and then have it generate a new dungeon level.

I also learned to get 99 lives right at the beginning of the game, thus turning me into the sad power gamer I am now. Currently maxing levels/jobs on FF Tactics PSP.

As for the arcade, I had to think for a bit. I never had enough quarters to finish many games at the arcade so imagine my surprise when I realized that the arcade game I finished was Double Dragon. It was managed on one quarter and was at my local supermarket. I was fighting the last boss when an earthquake hit. People started running outside and I was to be damned if I didn't finish. A huge bag of Meow Mix hit the floor a few inches from me and a few fireplace logs rolled behind me as I watched the credits roll. It was the greatest moment of a 10 year-old's life with no one to watch because they were too busy with "Duck and Cover."

Now that I look at it I have had a ton of game systems... and games throughout the years. That was with my brother though, now I live by myself of course and just have the PC, 360, DS, Wii and a PS2. Funny thing is aside from the Macs, the first two PCs, the Master System, NES, Gameboy and SNES we pretty much had to pay for the rest of the stuff ourselves. I think our parents quickly realized how much we liked games and decided making us do chores for allowance would work if we wanted to play... guess it did.

Sorry for the lengthy post, it was nostalgic.

For the young whippersnappers out there, Karateka was a sweet 1984 side-scroller by Jordan Mechner and predecessor to the original Prince of Persia (also by Mechner and also awesome). And the Apple II was the thing that came before the Mac and the iPod. I must also include the original Lode Runner (Apple IIc this time) as I am quite proud of having completed each of the 150 levels during the summer of '87 (I remember the Iran-Contra hearings playing on the TV in the kitchen all the time).

Most 2600 games didn't have an end so you couldn't really beat them. I flipped Space Invaders (old schoolers will know what that means). I got enough points on River Raid to send a screenshot in to Activision and get an iron on patch. As far as games that actually had an "end" I guess maybe one of the first few games I had for the NES. I beat Super Mario Brothers, Metal Gear, 1943 (had to have an NES Advantage though, the joystick and turbofire was a must), and Castlevania.

At one time, I had a spiral in which I listed all the games I played, rented, or owned. I ranked them on whether I beat them or not, and whether I liked them or not. I had little filled in circles to indicate how much I liked them like Consumer Reports. It was pretty sad. I wish I still had that spiral though...

]]> <![CDATA[What Was The First Game You Beat?]]> It was 1991, and after watching Robin Hood: Prince of thieves with my parents for my birthday party, I opened my birthday present - Mega Man 3 for the NES. I asked for it because I played a friend's copy of Mega Man 2, and was instantly hooked. But when you're 10 years old, you want the NEWEST version of anything, assuming it would be better (there were similar bragging rights in school over the newest Garfield book but I'm getting off track).

At any rate I was so hooked on the game, I beat it within 2 weeks of recieving it - proceeding to play it over and over for several months before something else took my attention. For this reason Mega Man 3 will always hold my hearts attention, and it was the first NES game I ever beat (I sucked at games as a kid, I'd had an NES since 1987).

He got a bit angry, but I was glad I finished and and watched Sonic tap his toe in time to the end theme. I'm sure I got very near to being Elite on Elite, but never got past Deadly despite weeks of play at that level, the game didn't really have an end though.

I can't immediately say "Wasteland" but that certainly was the most distinct "you won" moment as I see it in my minds eye. It got harder and harder for 5 or 10 levels and then plateaued and just replayed the same exact level over and over again. So I decided to try and roll over the points. I was at maybe 10,000 points and wanted to see what would happen when I broke through to the next digit, I can't remember the details precisely.

I would play as much as I could, right after school and then before bed. More on weekends. There was no 'save' or anything, you just had to leave the console turned on. This went on for many days until finally, the numbers got closer to 999,999! So exciting! Almost there! Yes! Back to zero with absolutely no perceptible change in the game! Hmm. Bummer.

Games like River Raid (you just kept going for a high score) or Jungle Hunt (you could rescue the girl, but then you just start from the beginning). I remember for a time when you beat a game it was called "flipping" it (e.g i flipped Congo Bongo), because back then the biggest accomplishment was getting such a large score that the counter flipped back around to zero.

But I think the game I would consider as first beaten (because it holds such a strong memory for me) was Space Quest I on my Apple IIGS. This was pre-internet, pre-game guide, so I definitely remember a lot of time spent trying to figure everything out. What an accomplishment it was when I finished! Especially since I when I got to the end the first time around and realized I didn't take the cartridge with Star Generator plans out of that damn machine, and had to replay the whole thing again. Earning buckazoids by gambling was a bitch.
