Recently an article appeared on the net (www.brokenreview.com) where a group stress tested a Nintendo DS Lite. As the story moved through the top gaming blogs, the question everyone was still left wondering was: "But, will it blend?"

Nintendo products are known for their durability, leading fans to speculate that they're actually constructed of a mythical substance dubbed "Nintendium." But can even mighty Nintendium stand up to a Blendtec Total Blender? The Internet needs to know!

I hope they'll take the challenge.

Like at Gamestop they tested cases and once threw a PSP inside one of the cases across the room at the wall really hard and it was fine (although the case cracked). So it may be durable. But that's nice to know about the DS Lite and makes me feel way better about carrying it around in my pocket.

]]> <![CDATA[How Much Punishment Can a DS Lite Take?]]> There's some assumption that a PSP would just die from any abuse. I've posted it before, but this is my experience with a 1001 I've had since launch:

Dropped from 1-3ft about a half dozen times onto hard floor or carpet. No effect at all.

With it on my hip in a thin leather case, I fell off a bicycle onto it screen-first, pretty much hip-slamming it into the ground. The screen cracked, but the body and screen cover were fine. I replaced the screen for $25 and nothing else malfunctioned.

I once dropped it into a pot of water by cosmically unlikely fumble. It was submerged for probably 5 seconds. Afterward I completely disassembled it (did you know the screen reflector is about 5 layers of sheets?) and wiped down the boards with 99% isopropyl alcohol. Surprisingly it hadn't fully soaked it and SOMEHOW the UMD drive was dry. The laser was untouched. After the alcohol dried, it was good as new, save for an extremely minor smudge on the backlight reflector panel - basically invisible from any playable angle.

Other abuse... I've basically had this thing on my hip every day. Realistically I've worn it for probably over 1000 days now (though I replaced it with a slim recently because I'm afraid it will break one day and it's as hackable as a PSP gets.) I worry a bit when I fall asleep with it on and roll over onto it, but it's never been hurt by it.

I know it's easy to assume it's fragile just because it's high tech and has small moving parts, but I'm routinely surprised how hardy it is. Then again, in elementary school I had a slightly pocketable B&W TV from Sony, and for several years I carried a Sony Clie PDA and neither of them had any hardware failures either, though the finish is defnitely heavily worn from use.

Now for the DS torture tests... I'm not going to bother to watch the videos. I'm certain it will take far more abuse than I'll ever give it unless the touchscreen ever becomes unresponsive - and while I've worn some grooves in protective films on it, I've never really heard of someone wearing out the touch sensing film layer on a DS. Actually the only Nintendo handheld - no, system - that I've had hardware failures is my original Game Boy - after a few years columns started blanking on the LCD and it racked up more and more eventually. GBC, GBA, GBA SP, and even NES are all running good as new.

Oh - I've ridden a bicycle for hour long stretches in heavy rain with both systems hanging from a top-flap hip bag. Neither one had to prove it was waterproof because that design of bag is great for rain. Just wanted to say that because they've saved my systems a few times.

Drops, stabbings, being tossed around in a bookbag with lots of sharp objects. Meanwhile I've been through 2 DS Lites in a year because one couldn't take a little oil (don't ask), and the second has a big circle (it's a perfect circle too, I don't know how my brother did it cause he won't tell me) of dead pixels right in the middle of the top screen.

My friends dad once chucked their SNES out the window (many many years ago) because they played it too much. It fell two stories and smashed onto the concrete below. They cried. They took it back upstairs plugged it in expecting the worst - and it WORKED! Still does to this day. In fact I have never had any problems with a Nintendo console that I recall?
