The dad/son machine gun sound effects are from a Tecmo title - sounds like Ninja Gaiden because you hear the "BOOM" sound effect when you get hit right before the machine gun fire starts.

The "barking" sound effect sounds like it's from an Ultra Game title (possibly Metal Gear), but I'm not 100% on that one.

I'm not sure whether it's impressive or pathetic that I know that.

From what I understand based off the wikipedia page, Sonic likes to advertise to areas where they will build stores even years from now. That way you have a built up craving for their food I guess. Also to be more relevant to this topic. I remember Lionel Play World in South Florida, much better than TRU. My mom worked there for a few months back in 88/89. I think it's now a boat supply store or something, at least it was 4 years ago.

Then when they were going out of business, they slashed the prices on them dramatically. It got to the point where they were selling them 3 for $5.00. What a glorious time for me. I ended up with almost every game made for the 2600 and still have them to this day. I even still own the dreaded ET. I also remember that when the huge Lionel PLayworld went out of business, I saw a Lionel Kiddie City in the mall a few years later. I wonder if Playworld and Kiddie City were 2 different chains with Kiddie City being the Kay-Bee chain using the Lionel licensed name?

Godfathers couldn't compete financially when the Papa John's and Domino's started making it big. The chain is still pretty popular in Minnesota but is gone from most of the country. Oddly enough, it's huge in the UK -- but the pizza itself isn't remotely the same. If you do happen to pass a Godfather's and used to like it, make a point to stop. They haven't changed their recipe and that is one hell of a good pizza.

I see Hardee's commercials every once in a while on cable, same with Dave and Busters and some all you can eat pizza buffet chain, but we don't have them here in California. We do have tons of Jack in the Box and Carl's Jr restaurants, and we just got Sonic's. We had a few Godfather's pizzas for a while, but now there is only one left in my city. Little Caesar's completely left our area for almost a decade and now we have three of them within 7 miles of my house. We also went crazy for pogs and White Castle is only in the freezer section. I think that there is now a Dunkin Donuts somewhere in our city, but it is very new and the only one I have heard about within a few hundred miles.

It's funny to see people realize that I've never seen a Jack-in-the-Box or Carl's Jr commercial on television in Georgia on broadcast, cable, or sat (though I got the same Carl's Jr ads as "Hardee's" ads). Advertisers are just very good at not wasting dollars on markets where they have no presence. I went to San Diego in '94 and it was all about "POGs." No one had heard of them in the South East and the only one that advertised on TV was "Tonks" which had come and gone years earlier (kinda like sports-card POGs). A year later, POGs and POG makers were advertised all over in the SE states, but they never got like CA (every gift shop had POGs, slammers, POG storage tubes, etc; every restaraunt or TV station promo involved POGs, even their local McDonalds').

At first, I was convinced that this was a different Lionel (none of my Lionel documentation and train catalogs ever mentioned a toystore), so most of us weren't making the connection and/or never heard of the toystore.

I've seen the Kangaroos and the "Turn that frown upside down" jingle used in Kay Bee/KB Toys commercials when I was younger and I never once heard of a Lionel store (despite owning Lionel train sets and knowing of Lionel). Also, it could be a regional partnership. They may have allied with what remained "KB Toys" in the aftermath.

Chuck E Cheese was Showbiz Pizza in my region and I would see the EXACT same commercials overdubbed with the other name when I would visit family elsewhere.

Lionel Kiddie City were stand-alone supermarket-sized toy stores. Kay-Bee (now K.B.) are smaller boutiques in malls.
Lionel was one of my first jobs as a teenager. I know they closed doors in the early 90's so i wouldn't be surprised if they were bought out by whomever runs K.B.
