there's no ps3 version probably because every ps3 owners already has the game?? 25% of each console's userbase owns the game I believe, and 25% of the 360 means that a lot of people (in millions) still don't have it. On the other hand, the ps3 still has maybe 2-3 millions of non-COD4 owners, so it's not worth releasing for them.

reptile168

@Evil J: Why, I'm quite the opposite. That's interesting. I actually didn't like Resistance as much as I'd like a(nother) historically accurate interpretation of the invasion of Normandy.

BTW, unfortunately, we haven't seen the most intense parts of the invasion (namely: Omaha Beach) in COD or next-gen in general yet. I'd like to experience that in full HD (or even 720p) with 5.1 surround. Man that could be incredible.

Other than that, we can milk WW2 shooters as long as I don't grow tired of 'em, obviously!!! lol :D

Candlejack

WWII games (any game in a particuler setting) will always be viable. Theres always a new generation of people who havn't experience the setting. As long as the game play is good, the setting will have a place to stay.

I think the main reason its going to, and has lasted for so long, is because it gives new stuidos and developers a chance to worry about making a game, instead of coming up with tons of new material and concepts. Its a great entry point into the industry.

CrimzinD

That's nice reading comprehension skills you have there. The subject wasn't new popular games taking over older games, it was how older games can find new ways of releasing additional content so that they don't get lost in the new release shuffle.

Longevity vs new experiences, not old vs new. Thanks for playing though.

whiptcracker

@Candlejack:
Opinions are opinions... but seriously, how long can we milk WWII shooters?

I understand the appeal, it was the last war where there was very little ambiguity about right and wrong on a moral level. Very little gray area on who were the good guys and who were the bad guys. I get it.

But, in all honesty, how many games can you REALLY invade Normandy before it gets old?

Personally, I've played a handful of CoD titles, and 0got bored with them immediately. There is really only one "WWII" style shooter that's held my attention for more than a week, and that was Resistance: Fall of Man because it was more interesting than what I've watched on the History Channel and played in games before.

I simply love Call of Duty 4. The single player is fantastic with a storyline that actually addresses the fact that there is gray area in modern warfare, that war is not glamorous and the good guys don't always ride off into the sunset like in the movies. That's wher the game breaks convention. As for the multiplayer, while it loses all of the conscience and moral context of the campaign, it's so exciting it hurts.

Does it reinvent the genre? Nope, it just gets it all right... and innovates enough (perks, air strikes, etc.) to make it more than average.

Evil J

The thing that gets me about map packs is the way it breaks up the community over a few bucks. Happened with Warhawk- there's about 20 servers running the new map pack yet only two of the things have enough players for a match. This while the original servers have plenty of people 7 days a week.

You would figure that so many people love a game like COD4 that there wouldn't be a problem with fracture. I'm betting that it will be just as bad, but maybe less noticeable because of the number of players.

Like on PC these expansion maps on a game like COD4 should be free. At least eventually free even if they charge up front, then make them free x months later. That ensures a game this good will get played for years rather than months.

crashlanding

Sounds reasonable. This game received high acclaim on the 360 anyway.

I don't have it for the PS3 and probably never will buy it either - it's an average shooter in my eyes. Played it on the PC to know that.

No doubt, Call of Duty 1 and 2 were waaay superior in comparison of their respective timeframe. Man, CoD1 was absolutely groundbreaking. The atmosphere, everything. Then, CoD2, was just awesome.

Well, there were some CoD fuckups, like those by Treyarch. But CoD4 simply can't deliver to a CoD-fan since day one. Infinity Ward needs to go back to WW2 for the atmosphere that CoD4 lacked in my eyes. Probably it's just the whole anti climactic, depressing, dangerous and unpredictable feeling which WW2 brings with it.

Candlejack

@beckerist:

This is exactly why I don't buy premium maps, no matter what they do you're still splitting the player base up between the have's and have not's. It's nice when they make it easy to not want them by charging too much for too little.

I'm really curious to see how they handle the maps for the PC release. No one charges for maps on PC.

I mean, we're at the point where PC players could miss out on maps because they're charging for them on 360 (COD4) and console players are missing out on maps because they are *free* on the PC (Team Fortress 2). How insane is that?

We always hear the propaganda that it costs money to develop these maps so they have to charge for them, yet smaller studios like Epic and Valve have no problem with supplying more content for free than Bungie or IW will make at a premium. Something doesn't add up.

skullivan

So we have to pay $60 ($70 for me for the special edition), then most likely another $20 for maps? While people who didn't support launch get to spend $60 flat for new art, game, and the maps? I think I might just stop playing video games. First Lost Planet now this? It will end up being just like DVD re-re-re-re-re-releases, with their counter-spawned special editions and criterion collections. It's hard enough to afford these games as it is. I for one will boycott buying the new maps and probably end up selling my copy of CoD.

P.S. - To those who were talking about valve, the TF2 maps might not be free either. Microsoft has say in price.

Liopleurodon

fourzerotwo.com doesn't mention a price though.

If the pack came out a month ago I probably would've considered it, but in between Vegas 2 and GTAIV? Not gonna happen at 800 points. I'll download the Halo 3 Heroic Pack since it'll be free and mess around with that if I want a change from Vegas 2.

skullivan

They haven't announced a price yet but 800 points is likely. IW's community manager hinted on his blog that they may even end up being free. I'd be happy even if they released them at 400 points. I don't like the trend of decreasing the number of maps in these packs and then raising the price on them.

@EnigmaNemesis:

Not really. There's no extra stuff on the disc, you're just getting the extra maps included. Would you really have wanted to wait 5 months to get COD4 just to get the new maps for free? In fact, seeing as you could have gotten COD4 for $40 at one store or another at any given point since November this release (if they charge $60 for it) will actually cost you more overall.

skullivan

Is there even anyone playing the PS3 version? lol, i'm sure they are....

New maps in April? Hmmm... That gives me a few weeks of tearing it up in Vegas 2 and then back to COD4 to play new maps up until GTAIV. It's going to be crazy. Especially since I still have Condemned 2, Frontlines & Bully begging to get played.

Collapse The Control

I predict, like Halo 3, that unless the title maintains "attention" with increased "DLC" (aka playable Maps) and more often, the title will fall once GTA IV, Rainbow 6v2, MGS4, and a few others are release within the next dozen weeks.

I am seeing a pattern where games that are a hit are released, and then after 30-60days of playing, it peaks unless the game writers provide something to sustain it.
(Whether that is add-ons, maps, new features...)

SigmundTheSeaMonster
