Why? Lost Odyssey is doing far better in the U.S. than anyone expected. That is in large part thanks to Microsoft's marketing machine. Would it have sold well on the PS3? Yes. But it would have sold to an audience already very familiar with JRPGs. On the 360 it's bringing in a new audience. A lot of people on my friend list didn't even play a JRPG until either Blue Dragon or Lost Odyssey (and are constantly messaging me for play tips as a consequence). These games are fresh to them and they're actually having fun with the titles -- even though their gaming knowledge prior didn't extend beyond FPS games and maybe Gears of War.

So anyway, although overall the game was only in the 'really good DS game' category rather than 'amazing' (like Mario Galaxy), it did make some pretty significant changes to a very long-running series.

To be honest though I think when you look at this kind of list you have to bear in mind that the publication presumably never intended their scores to be used like that. Let's say an editor gives a 10 to a portable title, does that mean it's always better than a a console game they gave a 9 to? Or are they really comparing it like-for-like to other DS games? Etc.

I mean get over it. IF it happens to you, it will only happen once at best. Those stories of people sending in 3 consoles are exceptions.

I'd rather have a console that might need to sent for repair than a console I have nothing to play on.

(BTW: I did get the 3 red lights over a year ago. for the record, I wanted a newer console so I left it in a place that lacked airflow (not on purpose but because it was convenient to put it there) and thought 'the hell if it breaks, it's guaranteed). The one I've had since is more silent and not once even hiccuped.

My Wii and PS3 are far from perfect too: Mario Galaxy freezes every now and then and the PS3 need cold reboots especially when playing online.

See? Nothing's perfect.

And STILL nobody has been able to explain to me why Lost Odyssey has loading and framerate issues on some consoles and not on others. I'm not so sure that consoles breaking are the only issue with this clusterfuck.

However, it should be noted that for nearly a year now MS has been selling upgraded 360s with high quality DVD drives, and cooler CPUs that are highly unlikely to have the same types of failures as the early versions.

That obviously doesn't excuse the manufacture of DOA consoles for the first year and a half or so, but if the ONLY thing holding you back from playing some of the amazing titles exclusive to 360, then its probably okay to join the party now.

PS - Phantom Hourglass FTW, and I got COD4 about 2 weeks ago and play w/ the aforementioned brothers - can't even imagine when I'll be interested in going back to Halo3 now.

Funny whoever said that I was suppporting the PS3? That one doesn't have quality games yet either.

The 360 games I'm looking forward too are all Live arcade games like Castle Crashers, 1942: Joint Strike and Commando 3 and the only full game would be Ninja Gaiden II (though the first xbox one didn't have an as good setting and designs as those 3 NES games or the original Arcade game). And the only game worth playing for me at the moment is Virtua Fighter 5.

NDS is getting most of my attention right now. Legend of Kage 2, Contra 4, Zekkyo Senshi Sakebrain etc etc

You guys seem to forget that Famitsu is a gaming magazine. Most of Japan likes casual/social/ecchi games, which more often than not don't exactly win in terms of overall quality and originality. Of course, I'm sure MS is more than happy with this showing.

As many spokesman for Japanese devs have stated, the Japanese gaming consumer just isn't into console games like they have been in the past. Currently, out of all consoles sold this gen in the 3 major regions, Japan only accounts for 15%.

If anything, this is just more proof of how gaming sales in Japan are becoming less of a priority.

The whole "in Japan" thing would address most of your comments. GTA:SA was probably a 2007 release, while MetPrime 3 only was released last month (although I have no idea how well it scored).

And it's obvious why those 360 games didn't help much: they're largely either FPS games (which don't help consoles in Japan no matter what) or something like Winning Eleven, which is available on both Playstations and therefore isn't likely to drive someone to pick up a 360.

Have the Elder Scrolls games done well in Japan? I know the Wizardry influence would seem to indicate that the Japanese would take to Oblivion, but I guess that's not the case....

Famitsu has always been a great benchmark (especially for my tastes) of the best games going around so I can understand the 360 heavy list. Good to see Uncharted up so high too.

Preference dude, preference. Try not to make your opinions out to be fact. I've been playing a lot of CoD4 MP lately trying to get into it but I still have way more fun with Halo 3 MP. The gameplay is so radically different I don't know how they can even be compared other than they both have the same perspective.

I certainly don't mean to imply that EVERY 360 has failed, but I absolutely believe that you either are now, or will very soon be, in the minority. One of my four 360's lasted almost two years...that doesn't change the fact that it's poorly designed (all four eventually RROD, with two doing it TWICE, though all are kept in a cooled/controlled environment), and it seems like other regions are less willing to buy something that is not reliable. I don't wish anyone ill, so I actually hope your 360 lasts for another ten years. But your good fortune doesn't change the fact that it's an unreliable bit of kit, albeit one with a very nice lineup of games.

I miss a lot of the games, but not enough for me to put up with the constant uncertainty about the hardware

Also, a lot of these "amazing 360 games" are also available on the PS3. They're not going to go out and buy a 360 for a bunch of good games they can get for their PS3.

The only true non-'Hollywood' console is the Wii; they're more like Bollywood on crack and motion sensing (which come to think of it, a Bollywood-themed DDR-like game would be incredible...)

Lousy classification, and I don't mind the PC ports. It doesn't hurt the PC market whether they decide these games are ported or not, consumers can just not the games you know, and considering the costs of game development these days, developers NEED to give these ports.

But anyway, I'm just whooping for Lost Odyssey being up there!

@futurebiblehero: I don't think TPH was 'complete garbage', I thought it was a great game, but it certainly wasn't in the 'absolutely amazing' category that I'd place Mario Galaxy in. (Likely Oblivion is a better game than TPH too, but I haven't played it, so I wouldn't know.) On the other hand, anything 37 or above is really in the same category of being really good according to their review, I don't see any particular point in differentiating between 37 and 39.

@ZeAvIs: Oblivion isn't in front of Mario Galaxy. They have the same score. Whoever made up this list just picked that order... It would've been better to show 'joint' places.

Same goes for every other game that got a less than perfect score from Famitsu. I still claim that Smash Bros. Brawl would have got a 39, had it not have been for the inclusion of Nintendog references within.

Microsoft has helped reinforce this negative opinion by building the worst console hardware in history. They seem to agree with me - - tons of great games, but not great enough to make it worth the hassle of constant RRODs. If MS had a quality story to go with the library story, they might actually be relevant outside of NA.
