Fads tend to be very short lived, tend to be fueled by perception.

Trends, while not always permanent, do tend to last longer and tend to be indicators that things are changing.

I would argue that the Wii is a trend rather than a fad, for three reasons.

1: It's successful. While fads do make money, they tend to be very short lived affairs, limiting their overall success. The Wii on the other hand has sold over 20 million units, and has put out quite a few million seller franchises. Which indicates that not only are people buying the console, but they're buying games for the console as well. Which of course means they're continuing to use them rather than letting them gather dust on a shelf.

2: Nintendo's market is expanding. Seriously, I know somebody at church whom has grandchildren, and still owns a Wii, uses it frequently, and has bought multiple games for the platform. The games he has bought are of course, not the typical hardcore gamer titles that fans focus on, however the fact that Nintendo's market is expanding into demographics they do not typically play games, is both an indicator of success, and indicates that it is not a fad. People that tend to buy into fads, tend to buy into the same kinds of fads over and over. For example, somebody that owns one piece of cheap miracle working exercise gear, is liable to own more than one. What this says to me, is that for this to be a fad, it has to largely be fueled by people who are into, "fadlike gaming experiences." Since I'm not seeing that, I would say this makes it less likely that the Wii is a fad.

3: Hardcore gamers are buying it too. Sure it may not be their main console, but most self described gamers I've met at least consider it a viable gaming platform, if not a downright good one. Typically when a fad product comes out, it's almost entirely ignored by people who are more serious about what the product is supposed to do. For example, cheap miracle exercise gear is largely ignored by people who already exercise regularly and know how to use tried and true equipment. Seeing as how hardcore gamers do buy some of the titles on the Wii, that would seem to suggest that the platform is not a fad.

What the Wii is however, is a trend. Nintendo saw that the casual gaming market was a growing, under served gaming market, and created a platform designed to meet it's needs. Since the machine is primarily designed with casual gaming in mind, it's not as heavily utilized by the hardcore gamers. However it's still a viable gaming platform with lots of bonus's and uses, so when games come out for it that meet the tastes of hardcore gamers, they will play those games.

Overall, this indicates that the gaming market is diversifying. Which is not a bad thing. I mean, just because you're say, a fan of mindless action movies, does not mean that there being a couple romantic comedies at the same theater is a bad thing. Gaming diversity means more opportunities for the developers, it also potentially means new franchises, new big names, and potentially new games that both hardcore gamers and casual gamers enjoy.

So like I said, not a bad thing.

Not entirely surprised, because for the past few years Microsoft has been doing the vast majority of it's selling during Holidays and big game launches. Wii - expected. Printing money like crazy.

360 - fine numbers I'd say. I think their growth is gonna slow a bit, but they are doing fine. 250k is still a lot of boxes. MS is fine, despite the naysayers. The software numbers continue to be crazy. Another 200k almost for Rock Band is insane too.

The whole industry is pretty healthy which is good for everybody who likes games, I'd say.

1. any game that does not appeal to hard core gamers is not a REAL video game, these include a) anything availible on any nintendo system b) anything that appeals to a broad range of people, c) anything MARKETED to casual gamers

2. if it takes less than 80 hours to complete then it's not worth playing

3. when you start a game you are REQUIRED to play it until you finish, (by finish we mean unlocked every secret gotten every endiong, in short do everything that is possible to do in the game)

4. if you have played a game 5 times but finished it 4 that means you never finished it at all

5. you are not allowed to play any other game until you finish the one you are on

6. you will NEVER under any circumstances use a walkthrough, cheat code ask a friend for help consult the instruction manual, ect. if you cannot figure it out on your own you are not worthy of playing it, you are a pathetic loser who has no buisiness gaming

7. games are to never be purchased in big box stores or online equivalent thereof, forbidden are Walmart, Toys R Us, Target, ect, also forbidden are Amazon, eBay ect, ideally you will import your game directly from japan or the manufacterers website, failing that gamestop or EB is ok....I guess

8. above all remember this, games are never played for fun, they are for bragging rights over how superior a gamer you are to everyone else, after all, gaming is Serious Buisiness

if you do not abide by all 8 rules you are NOT a Real Gamer

I'm also rather surprised Nintendo hasn't shelled out the cash to both up the Wii's production fivefold, and dropped the price down fifty bucks. They'd have no problems selling every single one at this point, and that larger user base would only make their jobs easier. Less need to constantly crank out titles when third parties are actually eager to produce things for it.

I would say this increase in sales for Sony is likely in large part due to the win of the format war and may not necessarily mean a big increase in software sales. When HD-DVD finally lost, I went to ebay and picked up a 60GB unit for Blu-ray primarily. I also got a used copy of Motorstorm for $30(the only PS3 game I own). I still prefer the 360 controller and Live so any cross platform titles will be bought for the 360.

There really isn't a reason for the Wii to be doing so well. It just is. Usually that signals a fad. Unless Wii goes the way of DS then it's still entirely possible. Some fads lasted years before falling off the map.
