@kubevubin: As I understand it, compression takes CPU/Memory cycles from the game. If you are trying to make the fastest game possible, dealing with decompressing the sprites at "load time" to cache them up would be an issue. Especially if you are trying to cache sprites in on the side band because of memory constraints.

Would seem that allowing a larger game in this case is just the way to go.

Bluvox

I'm not terribly familiar with texture compression in games as far as what format are used, but - honestly - I'm not understanding how it could be so difficult to compress sprites like these. Granted, I don't know if any of the texture formats supported would use a compression algorithm similar to that of .gif or .png images, but these would compress beautifully as .png files and easily allow the game to fit within the 150MB size limit.

If there isn't such a compression algorithm available for Xbox 360 games, then I'd say that it's quite an oversight. While it may not sound terribly glamorous, using .gif or .png files as textures or sprites could be a huge space saver.

I suppose that developers could also implement .png or .png support into their games, anyway. There's really no good reason not to in this case. These sprites don't have a lot of colors, after all.

kubevubin

There are only a few compression techniques, and they are well-known from all programmers. I have one that I picked up for my original xbox, when I was running emulators on it. It's a multi-tap, so it works with GC/Wii, and PS2 as well, and was made with actual arcade hardware. Sometimes you are lucky and find one at GameStop still for about $6.
