Hollywood definitely has more to worry about than a silly game being released. Stop blaming poor ticket sales on the game, and look at the products you're putting out. People are sick of the same shit over and over again (yes, including the plethora of bad superhero movies that come out. I'm not saying Iron Man is going to be bad--my hopes are somewhat high for this one--but Fantastic Four? Spider-Man 3?) Maybe if Hollywood would realize that it underestimates the intelligence and taste of its audience, more people would go to the movies because we would have something better than the normal schlock to spend our hard-earned money on.

I'll see what the reviews for Iron Man look like before I make a decision. I think I'll probably only stop playing GTA for three reasons: 1) Eating, 2) Shitting, and 3) Sex. That's about it.

Please, that logic's just moronic. The reason why Halo 3 may have had an impact on the movie industry was because Halo 3 was released at a time when Hollywood released a slew of utter crap. As The Onion ironically pointed out, it should be Bungie complaining about Hollywood crapfests driving up Halo 3 buying more than anything else.

For Iron Man, the comparison cannot be made. GTAIV very well may outsell Halo 3, but it won't have an impact on Iron Man, or vice versa. Both GTAIV and Iron Man look amazing, and I can honestly tell you that I'll be in line for both of these suckers the weekend they come out. GTAIV will be among the best-selling games of 2008, and Iron Man will be one of the highest grossing movies of the year as well, period. I guarantee it.

GTA will not hurt Iron Man's sales. If it is an excellent movie, then many people will forego whatever activity they intended to pursue that day and choose to see it. If it is another crappy Fantastic 4 level comic movie, the public will choose to do an assortment of other things instead of watching it. This can be said of any movie. Hollywood is only now realizing that videogames have entered the mainstream and either see them as a threat, or wish to use them as a scapegoat. I believe it's a little of column A and a little of column B.

If I see it in a theatre, it will be during an afternoon showing when no one is around, and I'll have my ds on hand with headphones so I don't have to watch those AWFUL, HORRIBLE, miserably obnoxious ADS they play endlessly before movies these days. What's the deal with those? It used to be they would play an ad reel before the lights went out, and then go right into the previews and the feature. Now, it's lights down, everyone seated, then 15 minutes of the worst ads you've ever witnessed. And for some reason, the ads you see in movie theatres are way more insulting to the intelligence than those on tv; they seem to be specifically formulated to make my skin crawl.

Will GTA cause problems for the movie industry? Yes, I'd say it's probably plausible that it will. Is the movie industry equally if not more capable of shooting themselves in the foot? I've watched maybe a hundred movies in the past few years, and only two of them (Spiderman 3 and Snakes on a Plane) were in a theatre, so you make the call.

I'd be more likely to see Iron Man if my pals are in town, or I'm in their town. However, it won't be GTA IV that keeps me in, not at $60 new. Chances are I'll rent the Iron Man DVD in 3 months for 5 bucks less than the ticket cost, and pick up GTA IV for the 360 or PC when the price comes down to something more reasonable, like $30~40. Otherwise I'll be playing Brawl or working on some machinima.

@GMR2008: 2007 Video Game sales < 2007 Movie theater receipts. Average movie costs: ~60 million. Average ~$10-$15 million. Trending: Video games (increasing yearly), Movies (plateaued with some variance).

I think your wrong about the assertion movies are generally more profitable. DVD sales still tip it, but VG is eating away at many peoples entertainment budget. DVD, CD, live Music, Movies etc.. are competing with video games for time and money and video games are holding their own.

GTA4 is probably last on my list of things to do after hell freezes over. Screw R* and their crappy games with bland, boring gameplay and crappiest-real-effort-on-their-respective-system graphics. Media will hype it to hell though like the R* puppets they are and everyone will buy it for the "ooh, I just killed a hooker" feeling. It'll sell extremely well and I'll have to put up with the hype for even more half thought out, poorly made games that are "cool and mature" enough to sell millions regardless.

Iron man I'll probably see the week after opening weekend. Man I hate the crowds at comic book movies' opening weekends...

I doubt it. When Halo 3 released no big Hollywood movie was coming out. Movies still bring in way more customers than video games.

Halo 3 sold something like 8 million copies. With movie tickets at 10 a pop a movie that makes $100,000,000 sells out to 10,000,000 people and if you do the math a movie that makes more money sells out to even more people.

The movie business will always be more profitable and get more people than the game industry not to mention the top movie studios are 10xs richer than the top game studios.

I do beleive GTA 4 will more than likely murder Halo 3 in sales but I doubt it'll hurt Iron Mans release.

Neither one, since I don't go out to the movies and I don't have a PS3/360. I am currently playing Vice City Stories, which I am enjoying, but I will need to wait on the latest GTA. The only movies I have gone to the theatre to see in the last 4 years were Batman Begins, 300, and Beowulf in 3D, with Batman being the only one that I loved. I may end up seeing Indiana Jones or Batman in theatres this year, but nothing else. I almost always prefer watching something on my home theatre.

So, if anything is keeping me from seeing Iron Man on opening day it would be:
1. Awful audiences

This won't affect me one bit. I'm still going to go see Iron Man. And I don't even know anything about it, as I'm a non-comic book buff. I just think putting Robert Downey Jr. in it was brilliant; I love his acting.

It will, however, be my only venture out into daylight that weekend. After the movie I'll race home, back into my GTA-induced coma.
