I just think you're confusing causal relationships regarding the types of crime. If these things are more profitable to steal, it's far more likely that's motivating the violence of the crimes, not the idea that the mugger is a fan of one platform or the other. Sony and Microsoft tend to be shooting for the 16-29 year old contingent. If you look up some data, you'll find that folks between 15 and 24 commit more violent crimes on average then folks in other age groups. For example:

2003 - Arrest rates per 100k people for violent offenses:
Total of all age groups - 205.3
14 and under - 50.1
15 to 17 - 504.6
18 to 20 - 645.9
21 to 24 - 654.4
25 and over - 175.4

So, for every 100k between the ages of 21 to 24, 654 of them were arrested for a violent crime in 2003. That is significantly more then the average population.

All population - 551.9
14 and under - 280.1
15 to 17 - 2,387.1
18 to 20 - 2,102.2
21 to 24 - 1,208.2
25 and up - 361.2

Now the question of "Why the heck are folks in THOSE age ranges so violent?" is a good one, but the reason for why Nintendo hasn't had quite the same violent press is probably just because they are aiming for the wider market.

It's also notable that crime rates are going down since 1995 or so. Must be the video games! :-P

(Please note - I'm not saying all folks between 15-24 are violent. Since those rates are per every hundred thousand people, it's still like 2% tops in the worst age range. It's just that if you get mugged, he's most likely going to be in that 15-24 window, statistically.)

Okay. So why is it that out of all the video game related crime news stories that get reported, the worst and the most seem to be coming from microsoft/ps3 camps.

We know, based on how we see Nintendo/Microsoft/Sony, that one of those products is not like the other. The one that tries to appeal to family time together and smiles. The two others are all about how awesome they are and how much more awesome they can be. About being competitive, about having something that will explode your brain in your game system. Also very much about having fun, like Nintendo, but in a different way.

That being said.

I dont get why you're not seeing this. If a certain brand image (that of being 'cool' and 'the best') doesnt lead to a more asshole-nonasshole ratio, then...

Were game boys and game gears as popular as the psp is now? Think about the market exposure. Gamers were not as big of a lucrative market back then as it is now. Back in the day you don't see gameboy and think I'll jack it. You just think silly little gamer geek. But nowadays EVERYONE plays with a psp/ds/ipod and therefore those things are much more envied and lucrative to sell. I'm just saying everything should be put in perspective of their relative times.

Besides, when I was a kid, I couldn't fit the gameboy in my pocket (or the pocketversion). It was always in my backpack. Then again, I was a fat kid....

Its obviously grandpas' and little timmys gaming system. Thats fine, I love the Wii, play Virtual Console all the time. But the image... cmon. You have to admit the image for it is in a totally different place than the image MS and Sony throw out there.

1* Last generation, SONY built themselves an image to appeal to the 'gangsta' crowd.
2* XBOX/SONY are seen as more expensive so they are better targets for theft.

And finally - my own observation:

3* We are lying to ourselves if we don't admit that "hardcore" gamers are more prone to be socially mal-adjusted than your average consumer. And XBOX/SONY are the more 'hardcore' oriented brands.

You're drawing a completely WRONG conclusion from the evidence at hand. It has nothing to do with the fact that it is a Sony product or Microsoft product.

Do a google search and you'll find PLENTY of cases of Nintendo products being stolen. You see it with Sonys & Xboxes more because they COST more, so they are WORTH more on the black market.

Really...it has NOTHING to do with the fact it's a PSP and not a DS, whether you can see that or not.

Here's my guess- Sony and MSoft products have a tendency to cost more. Even though the prices are rather close, people see Nintendo as the "cheap" consoles. Violent criminals are likely to risk less for that which they consider cheap.

Even if you did the research and it does indeed show more media reports of crimes related to Sony product over Nintendo products, it still doesn't prove your hypothesis.

Correlation does not equal causation, your accusations of "Nintendo fanboys being more stable" is insulting because I doubt the people behind these crimes are typically Microsoft or Sony fanboys.

On the contrary it seems most of the time they are just regular people or perhaps even casual gamers who do these crimes. They'd steal an Ipod or nice television if they could.

So no, the Nintendo fanbase isn't any better then the Sony/Microsoft fanbase. Fans typically wait until they have the money to buy their systems.

Why are so many Sony-followers mean spirited, unfriendly people? Ever since launch, people have been getting shot, robbed, beaten etc over psps and ps3s...

Then theres Microsoft, in second, with owners killing children over video games, kids beating each other with baseball bats for xboxes... and then theres xbox live.

I don't care what people say about Nintendo, or Nintendo fanboys. They've got a much more socially adjusted userbase than the other two. And with a larger userbase, there must be some sort of magic there. Theres been some stolen Nintendo products, but nothing where I've seen people getting hurt over it.

Maybe the fact that DS/Wii is so 'uncool' is damn fine thing.
