I don't actually know, I haven't played the game, but for example, in Guitar Hero while you have to be pretty precise and you can't play anything other than the notes in question there's still a whammy bar you can play with, the game allows very slight delay or anticipatory note-strikes... it's not much at all, but it's there.

I'm thinking, maybe, the ability in a game like this to combine strings from different combos to get different sounds, maybe. I don't know, I'm just spit-balling here, but maybe a function like a whammy bar in this game as well.

I realy haven't thought about it in terms of specifics.

Werrick

@Tiber: Well, it would be possible, and I'm sure someone with more background on music than me will be able to say something with more sense.

However, I can see how it could work. You could have certain loose guidelines of what spells would be cast by what, and you could improvise (which could affect the spell) as long as you didn't really screw up, while recieving feedback from the game. If you moved towards more bass, you could get, say, a slow, powerful fireball, while higher tones would increase speed and decrease power, or something to that effect. Of course, a very, very easy baseline of a successful casting would be set, so that people without the musical creativity or skill could still play without being handicapped.

Basically, it's a very simplified version of the improvisational characteristics of Jazz.

Grive

The only I could think of to introduce creativity would be to have effects based on things like scale or beat. I'm not really into music, so forgive me if I'm screwing up the terms. But how would that affect the gameplay?

I'm kind of with Tycho when he was talking about why he doesn't like Patapon. There's no room to be creative or to be interpretive with what you're doing in the game.

Beat'em'ups are pretty rigid, you can do any move you like, but it has to be done properly to get it off. That being said I'm actually okay with that becuase it's not about creativity so much as adaptability and knowing what move to use when.

The problem is that once you introduce music into the event it becomes a creative experience, meaning that I'm going to want to interpret the music the way I want (within reason, clearly, you don't see me complaining about the fact that you can't win at Guitar Hero by mashing whatever the hell you want whenever you want).

Assuming there's some room for freedom in the interpretation on the part of the player then I'll probably love this game.

Werrick

what would be sweet is if you could play this game with a rockband or guitar hero guitar!

... or at least, you could have a controller hooked up at the same time, so you play with a controller, but then you switch to the guitar whenever you want to instantly start some "magic" attacks.

...okay, maybe its not the GREATEST idea, but still...

seriously, i cannnnnnnot wait for this game though. its going to be sooo rad.. i hope it goes the way of frank miller, and doesn't hold back on the mature content in the SLIGHTEST.

joelface

Team up Tim/Veryfine, Jack Black, and a ref. to RB and bingo-bango!...and you've got brillance!! Sigh...I'm very interested in this game, but why do I get the feeling that this will get much more love than other button mashing favs of mine. No offense to Mark (maybe he likes button mashers like myself), but what makes that play mechanic diff than Conan, Beowulf, KUF:COD, and Dynasty Warr....what is normally descibed as tired or uninspired in certain games (see the above list), but with something like this (or insert DMC4 or GoW)....GET READY FOR THA PHATITUDE!!! HELLZ YEAH!!

GameraTheGreat

@Darth Navster: Yeah thats my only hesitation about this game as well. I don't doubt Tim Schafer, Psychonauts is the best platformer of the last 10 years quite easily (Hon Mention: New SMB), but I really, really don't care for Jack Black. If its going to end up as just him reading the lines Tim gives him without any of his own "wit" mixed in I'm sure it will be fine, but we'll see.

DaiMacculate
