I don't see how this game will push the envelope, especially for online gaming.

If it's true that there is no online mulitplayer, it is Nintendo deliberately ignoring its (and would be) supporters.

With Sony's "home" coming, there's going to be a higher bar set for information exchange and standard options in a console. The Wii badly needs an update to make it more community and data oriented - and I don't mean scoreboards and ghost data.

(I wouldn't mind seeing some more true rpgs for the Wii as well, not this action/adventure masquerading as an RPG stuff...)

@TOPolk: Well Metroid is also one of Nintendo's "B" franchises and Mario is their "AAA" franchise...though I think SSBB is gonna outsell Galaxy which is a shame. They're different but I can say I like Galaxy better. Brawl is still good...just not Galaxy good. Oh! Prime 3 is also a damn fine game...think I'll pop that in now. Brawl needs a break from not working online.

@Catalyst: Keep in mind that this is a FREE SERVICE. If Nintendo doesn't have all of the features of Xbox Live, so what? We're not paying $50 a year for it, and it still works flawlessly when you've got four friends sitting on the couch next to you.

@TOPolk: I don't think the release date for Brawl and Mario Kart matters much. After Melee and Double Dash hit, you couldn't walk into a store that had GameCube games without them being there, until the death of the system. Heck, some stores STILL have copies of Melee. Given that these titles are evergreens and demand won't die off quickly, Nintendo can release it whenever they want and it'll still sell fine.

@crescentfresh: True, but the last time they did this they trampled all over themselves and a lot of people wound up overlooking "big" titles.

After that stretch where Super Mario Sunshine, Mario Party 4, Animal Crossing, Star Fox Adventures, Metroid Prime, and Zelda:WW were released seemingly on top of each other Nintendo went back to spacing releases out as they wound up cannibalizing each other's sales. Mario Galaxy did the same with Prime 3. Mario's going to sell a gazillion copies regardless...but if you move Samus further away, she gets a chance to shine on her own as well.

Smash Bros. and Mario Kart may be the only titles Nintendo has that can outshine the plumber's main series. To release them so closely together is very, very, very surprising.

I have to be one of the lucky few that is not having online issues nor disk reading issues with brawl what so ever. I'm in mexico and playing with strangers (no friends arond with wii and brawl yet) and save some lag at the beginning of the first fight, i had no problems, not finding people and not lag issues.

I do however miss hearing people since i always play melee with friends across the room. So it would have been nice to have voice chat... of course that would make the game even more likely to lag. I also would have liked to have some sort of online leaderboards.

Strangely enough the only game that i've had with online issues is Guitar Hero III on my PS3, fortunatly i have my friends and brother to play aginst locally and that game is great fun even in single player mode.

As for mario kart. I hope it doesn't have many issues, I don't know if i'm gonna buy it right away, since i still play the DS version and there are so many games comming. I may not have enough money nor time to buy them all.

@crescentfresh: It's about to start hurting their business. I will NOT be buying Mario Kart after the epic shitstorm that Brawl has turned into. After this many delays, this many years to figure out how to get online play to work properly, that fact that it does work on DS, and that Brawl was out for over a month in Japan, made me think Nintendo got their act together.

Of course, they didn't. Brawl doesn't even get simple leaderboards or stat tracking. Their reasoning is that it would make us "feel bad" that we weren't the number one Pikachu in the world. The probably reasoning? They don't have the first clue what the hell they are doing. I have yet to even get in a game in Brawl, and others don't even see certain modes. And MK is going to have advanced features? Please. They are rushing this out against GTA, and it is going to suck.

not even surprised at the problem though, the Xbox had it, the PS3 had it.

So why should it be any different?

If it worked without flaws, critics will say that's because the demographic of nintendo players don't do online, or some other type of excuse.

the thing is, they are dammned if they do, and dammned if they aren't.

all i can say is that in the end if the game lives up to the fun factor, that's all that matters.

I doubt that they expected the game [smash] to be this problematic. My guess is they scaled according to the DS and got burned. I'm glad though, big mistakes (when you don't go out of business because of them) lead to big improvements.

I'm not as worried about the release schedule (after taking 3 mins to look at some previews) but storage and the re-release of the wavebird would make me happy.

I don't think it's that Nintendo got caught with their pants down, they just don't care in the least about online. With Microsoft having already done all the work finding a formula that works with X-box live, it should be really easy to clone the formula. Nintendo simply doesn't want to. I'd say it's hurting their business, but it's not at all. They're making more money from games that Microsoft and Sony combined (which isn't difficult considering both companies are still losing money on the gaming front).

I want to like this game. I want to care. But Brawl just came out 4 days ago. I played Melee for seven years. I expect the same from Brawl. With that said its hard to care about a Mario Kart this close to Brawl's release.

I rarely have lag issues on the DS. And when Pokemon Battle Revolution came out last year for Wii there weren't any issues like this presenting itself. Provided, PBR is menu driven with stock animation (so it doesn't have to have the kind of real time interaction that Brawl or Kart would demand)

ign appears to have the only test copy in existence at the moment, and their reaction to the game has me scared. They're claiming that graphically, the game is barely on par with the DS version (which is downright insulting), and that even at 150CC, the game runs ridiculously slow (though at 60 fps), making the game more of a "bridging the gap" title to lure casual gamers in. They say the game's fun, but as of their early impressions, they like the DS version more.

This has gotta be Nintendo trying to combat GTA4 being released for PS3 and 360. They are probably worried that the media hype will shift to 360 and PS3 instead of the Wii then, so they are gonna have Mario kart come out then so people still talk about the Wii. If it was up to Nintendo, I'm sure they'd hold onto it a bit longer to give Brawl more time to shine, but thats what competition does.

As to the online, again I remember having all sorts of fun with Halo 2 on its release (lag, dropped games), took them a few weeks to patch it all up. I don't see why Nintendo is getting ragged all over for going through the same phase with Smash and probably Mario Kart, as this is their first real online system. Could it be better, and should it be better? Probably, again lets see how Nintendo responds. If the online play in Smash is still broken in 2 or 3 months, I'll be just as pissed as anybody else, if not moreso.

That's why I was/am pissed at the 360 for breaking down more than Britney Spears, and why I am pissed at Sony for not getting their PSN up to snuff in any foreseeable time frame with the release of Home. Stuff like this pisses me off.

You sell something, it had better damn well work. A hiccup or two could be excused, but SSBB has been out in Japan for over a month with the same issues, and they have yet to fix THAT.
