Ok, I can get online "with anyone" relatively often, with no problems. BUT, I can never get a "with friends" match to work.

This is the opposite of what is supposed to happen! I called Nintendo, and they guy just kinda stayed silent and went "uhhhhh" a lot, put me on hold, and then told me to call back next week. GREAT.

KMCC

It gets kinda annoying because in general, 9 pm is the time everyone gets off from work/school ext.
I actually started realizing this problem yesterday when it wouldn't stop giving me error codes. I went home thinking that it might have been my brother's router but come to find a ton of complaints.
Wouldn't it benefit Nintendo if they could have a large amount of people on at once? Wouldn't it boost popularity ratings or something?
At least I know I'm not alone in this.

MangoWOW4me

-_-;;

Anyone who has half a brain realizes that flooding servers and stuff causes stuff to go down -_-;; in fact it is not nintendo's fault that people cant connect, rather it is the larger amounts of people that are attempting to connect 'at once'

Go learn something if you don't realize that its the technology ( in this case, servers not the wii ) that is the main issue. Unfortunately it can't support the raving demand to play online. And yes, a company can attempt to do their best to cover the players by getting more and more servers but it is not cost effective to cover 'launch time' since the number of players will diminish.

so stop ragging about stuff you can't control. you blame nintendo for lack of wiis, maybe in some cases lack of ds and now they lack the online capability? move on already it's a fault of our excessive demand not their inability.

pyropetey

Nintendo couldn't help..I sorted it by updating the firmware on my router. I can play strikers charged online with no probs now. Whereas before I always got "disconnected during data transmission". I'm pretty sure that everyone moaning about getting the error code needs to adjust their routers...The Wii and DS can be very difficult with specific routers for no apparent reason.

Arcadewolf

I got my Brawl the same night i came out, and i've tried every single hour to connect online, and im not lying... that game wont let me play online. I tried opeoning ports and channels on my router, i tried using a different router with no firewall.... i mean i think i tried it all..... THe game wont find anyone for me to play with, I do know im online, because i can be an SPECTATOR so i can watch people play, but i cant play... Friendly games work.. and LAG depends on your friensd internet connection,if yours is pretty fast and his is slower the u both lag, if yours is pretty fast, then the game is smooth... but anyways I CANT PLAY WITH RANDOM PPL, and that's the reason why i bought my wii, and i bought my BRAWL, i only bought the wii for BRAWL. I am really dissapointed.

jassonpe

Just to let you know why the spectator mode works is because while you play a match, the match data is recorded and stored on the servers. I'm guessing this makes the servers busier than they should be. Now when you select spectator mode, the replay data is cached on your wii for your enjoyment. You don't see lag because the data doesn't record the lag, in a sense it fixes it so you can see at a 60 fps. And to comment on the with anyone online, have you guys tried team matches? I have gotten a lot more team matches to work than the with anyone. Some times it's still lag infested but we have to give nintendo slack. Mario kart DS was just like this and now that game is alot of fun online. Just give it some time and finish SSE, get all the characters, unlock all star mode and boss battle mode and get all the stages. By the time your done all that ( i have just the stages to go)online will be ready for you.

PS. sorry for the long comment, had alot to say.

DarkDragon9906

I have played plenty of online matches with Brawl, and here's what I have to say: This is EXACTLY how it is/was with Mario Kart DS and Metroid Prime Hunters for the DS. It's a combination of poor network hardware and data lines, and inept network software developers. Poor hardware and lines could theoretically explain the slow connection times and disconnect errors, but when your game lacks the most basic options like voting to go ahead with a match instead of waiting for a fourth player, that's just poor software design. Here's a typical Brawl online session (when it's WORKING): 1) Load up Brawl. 2) Log in to the WFC. 3) Choose an Anyone match. 4) Wait 50 seconds for a second and third player to join. 5) Wait another 60 seconds for the game to time out while waiting for a fourth player. 6) Play the match (a couple minutes). 7) Repeat step 5, OR, go back to step 3 if the game disconnects all of you. But of course, usually the session goes like this: 1) Log in to WFC. 2) Wait 60 seconds for the game to time out and give you an error code. 3) Repeat step 2 four or five times until you give up. It's totally pathetic. I spend 3x more time beating up that stupid dummy than I do playing.

j1000

Not as bad? I'm fairly certain that the big reviewers out there were given advance copies of the title so as to avoid connection problems and therefore poor reviews of online play. I stood in line at midnight like every other workin stiff. I can almost forgive the first night's complete lack of connectivity, but on night two when I did finally connect with my counterpart (from L.A. to AZ) our 2 minute matches, quite literally, lasted for 5-7 minutes because of the horrendous slow down caused from transmission errors and whatever server issues Nintendo is still dealing with.

I love the game, gave it 5 out of 5 because the good far outweighs the bad, but there is simply NO excuse for Nintendo's lack of foresight here. And don't even get me started on the Friend Code Bullshit.

JediMasta

Right now I have some router/modem combo from my ISP but I was still having the same issues with older firmware on DI-624 and 524. Upgrading the firmware was out of the question as the latest revs. were incompatable with XBOX LIVE, then I would have problem with XBOX LIVE cennectivity. Screw that!

Again I still don't have problem connecting my 360 wireless to the home router. I still chalk this up to a poor wireless adaptor in the Wii, I haven't check my logs on the new router yet, to see what is what. Also I mentioned that removing my GC wavebirds alleviated the problem but didn't resolve it. It makes no sense that Wii-mote wouldn't interfere with wireless communication and the Wavebird would. Still, I don't plan on playing Brawl with the Wiimote.

SAKY

First of all, this is a server issue. I hope this can be the training ground for more reliable service in future, however it's a shame Nintendo was so careful dipping its big toe into the pool of online play. Here's the best way to connect: hang around on the "select a character" screen when you first try to connect. Don't select a character until you see players queued up on the bottom of the screen. Move in and out of this screen a few times. I have NEVER connected to other players while waiting around on the practice stage after selecting both a character and stage. (BTW, I'm on a weak wireless signal, and I had little to no lag during games.)

Sustenance

@SAKY: Curious as to what brand wireless you use with the Wii?

I'm not trying to be an Apple fanboy, but out of the literally 4 different brands of Routers I've tried (NetGear, Linksys, D-Link and Apple), the two different models of Apple G-wireless routers worked the best, and never had to be reconfigured after I settled on a security setting that would work for all my various devices.

The difference is marked when I go to my friend's house, takes him 3-4 times as long to get system updates or VC downloads as it does me, and we have the same ISP.

That isn't to say I haven't had a few errors trying to get into matches, but I got 5 good, relatively lag-less ones last night. Curiously, the only time I had a game completely drop out was spectating ;)

DaiMacculate

I think I have the solution: Nintendo needs MORE SERVERS! Could it really be that simple?

I did manage to get into one randomly matched four-player game finally in the afternoon yesterday, and it was lag free! It was fantastic. But every other time it's been either impossible to connect or unbelievably laggy.

Playing with friend codes works great. But half the friends I've tried to register haven't gone through yet. Nintendo's servers are even lagging on that, I guess.

stop2

Haven't been able to get a match started yet. I tried to join a random brawl and got an error message (can't remmeber which) while waiting in the lobby hitting the sandbag around. Last night I tried to invite a friend (who I gotten a message from to play against) and got a message that he either had no internet connection (though it said he was online) or that I had been removed from his list (not the case).

Hopefully they get the kinks worked out before the next big wave of online play starts with Mario Kart. Until then, at least make it so I don't get booted offline every time I get an error such as the one above.

TRT-X

I'm not sure this has anything to do with Brawl. I have been getting this error code since I bought the damn Wii and it's completely intermittant. I can tell you that if I unplug my Wavebird recievers then the problem is aleviated but not resolved. I don't get why this would help as the Wiimotes are wireless also and would generate interferance. Basically the Wi-fi in the system keeps getting disconnected. I called Nintedo and they said that there must be too much Wireless interferance and that I should try diconnecting other wireless devices. This is total bullshit as I have no problem with diconnect on my XBOX or my Laptop. I set my router to chans 11 or 1 no change. Networking is what I do and the Wii's wireless is crap IMO.

My thoughts? Nintendo knows their Wireless stuff is busted and it took SSBB to raise the masses to bitch simultaniously when folks have been dealing with this since launch. I went look ing through Nintedo's communty forums and found a post that was quite a few pages long, of people bitching about the same thing months ago.

SAKY

I've been one of the lucky ones. I've only tried three online matches (in the middle of the day on Sunday) and it worked perfectly for the first two, and was kind of laggy for the third one. My friend has a hell of a time finding matches right now, though.

Seriously though -- is anybody really surprised? If this is still happening in a week or two it will be abhorrent, but when huge releases come out, servers go down or struggle. It just happens. Obviously from Nintendo's perspective, if they expect an average 250,000 people playing a week, say... and Brawl comes out, and hits a spike of 1,000,000? Nintendo isn't going to buy more servers just to hold out for those couple weeks. Neither would Microsoft. It's just how it works out.

Nintendo also had huge issues with Wii Shop connectivity at the beginning, but they got resolved. I see no reason to believe that this won't be as well.

It is generous of people like PapaBear to take time off from masturbating to a Nintendo-related problem to post his sympathies, though.

Huckleberry

I love how many of the "hardcore" commenters on here (me, sloppydrew and davekap to name a few) agree with the debacle that is NintendoWFC. Once again it shows how little Nintendo is willing to do to actually improve their services and products. They release a barely upgraded gamecube and their online service for the wii is clearly derived from the DS, which is wholly inadequate to support itself.

Unlike Sony, who spent a shitton in the past year and a half to try and catch up to MS, or how MS pretty much re-wrote their online for Halo 3 and a few other games (see halo3 guide blade stuff and new matchmaking), Nintendo spends far too much time sitting back on its laurels and its massive fan base to care less about its service.

Here we have Nintendo's biggest game, and there is not a sole alive who didn't know it was going to sell incredibly well, and yet nintendo didn't foresee the connection problems? What makes this worse is the Japanese launch of the game had this problem and now its here again with no real resolution.

As for people saying this is an overreaction. I will put it this way... Personally I am pretty dissapointed in SSBB. Don't get me wrong, its a great game, and I didn't hype the game up for myself like most. But lets be honest here, we paid 50 bucks for an online-enabled upgrade to a series thats not changed since its original inception in 98/99. Again, its a great game, but if I am paying full price for a game I already own twice, then the one major thing that separates it from the other games (aka ONLINE) better damn well work flawlessly out of the box. Not only is the online not working, but its an incredibly bare bones system as everyone knows by now. No leaderboards, a poor matchmaking and friend list... In an age where companies are aiming for perfection and constantly competing, its unacceptable to release a game that is near on broken online. Early PS3 titles and Xbox 1 titles didn't have the constant connection problems that SSBB is having right now. Sure those games weren't as anticipated as much as SSBB, but Nintendo knew this as much as we did. Plus to comment "try again" is just not enough, and is a sick joke on their part.

Thankfully I have people to play with locally, and a fully stocked X360 library to fall back on, but I gotta say, its left a bad taste in my mouth and is another black eye, in a long series of them for Nintendo in the eyes of the "hardcore" gamers.

Scazza

I'm surprised that everyone else is suprised by this.

Has any company, EVER, in the history of online gaming ever had their servers stand up under the strain of release week?

This isn't rocket science, people. This is one of the most anticipated games of this generation, right up there with MGS4. Nintendo's services are being absolutely hammered, and everyone saying "I TRIED TO PLAY BUT COULDN'T! I RETRIED THIRTY TIMES AND STILL COULDN'T GET IN!" seems to think that somehow, they're not contributing to the problem?

Come back in a week or so and things will be noticably better.

JChaos

This is truly ridiculous. Nintendo had more than enough resources to make sure this went smoothly and completely botched it... it's not like the high sales were unexpected. I've gotten into a few one on one matches (fun when it's working) but otherwise have had a bunch of failures. With all of the people that are playing this right now, it should be dead simple to quickly get into a four player matchup. I could understand the growing pains with Mario Kart DS, the first Nintendo WFC game, but it's been over two years later and there is zero improvement here with Brawl. It's not like there isn't plenty to keep busy with offline, but it's still quite annoying.

Mezodon

Putting my Wii in a DMZ on my router made ALL the difference. I couldn't get online at all before, and then after giving my Wii a static IP and setting it up in a DMZ, I was playing online for several hours, totally lag free. Sometimes getting on with other people is a little tough, but once you're in there's no lag.

I would seriously urge everyone having problems and using a standard wireless router to set up their Wii to have DMZ access to the Internet. It really solved my problems.

Marcelo

What Nintendo needs to do is take Nintendo WiFi down and just completely revamp it to make it atleast make it due able. I don't think I've ever had a good experience with the service.

I'll be the first to say that Nintendo screwed up big if this continues -- a month from now.

But how is it we didn't here about these problems from the Japan release? What are the sales figures on the game? How many people are trying to get online at the same time?

Nintendo has consistently underestimated their own product or have we forgotten the Wii shortage already. My guess is whatever system they're using for matchmaking is completely overloaded and they are working on it, just like any other big online release. I seem to recall a certain Live getting hosed around Christmas due to a massive influx of people. The same thing would have happened to Brawl if it launched when it was supposed to, probably worse.

In the end, you get what you pay for. I'm not saying Nintendo couldn't have done better, but for the cost of Wii online, its not too bad.

That said, I've tried 10 times for an Anyone Brawl, 7 successful connections, 3 with any lag at all in addition to 4 successful and 2 failed Friend Brawls. The fourth time I thought there was serious lag, but it was actually due to that time-slowing item.

StrikerGold

I'm surprised everyone is having major problems. I have some problems and only been in one laggy random match. Other than that, I spent hours in friend matches and had little lag to deal with. I had some FC match problems, but its like 1% to deal with. I hope they fix it soon, so I can battle you guys 8D

超外人

It's been three days and everyone is already panicking? I can't be the only person who is amazed by the tons of single-player content, of which I still have tons to do despite playing obsessively since launch. Local multiplayer, still the best part of Smash, is as fun as ever. I haven't gotten to play too many 4-player matches yet, but it's still far better than facing some random people online that you can't actually talk to. In fact, I haven't even attempted to play a match online: there's no need to.

Nintendo has weak online support, this isn't news. However, even a well built service like Xbox Live can have trouble when so many people try to play a game at once as is surely happening here. I'd say the chances are high that this problem will be continuing for a while. However, it's hardly gamebreaking. Anyone who can't find something fun to do in single player clearly isn't trying hard enough, because even without online this is still one of the most polished games I've played in a while.

Xenigma

I was going to comment, but I don't even know if it's worth it reading some of the trash here. Is it good that it's not working? Hell no, they should've known they needed a stronger backbone for it all. Does this ruin the game at all? Not by a long shot. Still a fun game. The only way the game would be ruined is if Nintendo doesn't fix the problem, and I don't expect they're going to have their ducks in a row in the matter of a day or two.

Ampillion, Dayman.

@Sloopydrew:

"[I wish Nintendo would leave] the industry entirely before they destroy it with their arrogance"

You certainly give them a lot of Earth-shattering credibility as far as one game's online hiccups go. I doff my hat to you.

The point is, a lot of this 'hell to pay' is virtually nonexistent. XBox Live has had issues - people, legitimately, have a bone to pick when a service they pay for on a monthly basis works poorly for more than a small length of time. But guess what? Microsoft does not make promises that say Live will work 110% all the time, every time, even from the Moon. They advertise what it can do as far as enhancing your experience, it does not promise perfection. You don't HAVE to pay for Live - only if you intend to constantly, actively play online games all the time.

If I owned a PS3, and it lagged for any new game, I'm pretty sure I'd grumble a bit about it. Who wouldn't? What is different is that they do not charge for their online service, and therefore is much more 'is what it is' as far as functionality goes. Obviously, they'd be suicidal to let a part of their service languish like that for longer than a week or two, but I would hardly be screaming for the end of a company just because of one game's issues, or service problems. But I apparently am in the minority about such things because I'm 'used' to lag because I played PC games online for a lot longer than I have console games. I have learned to manage my expectations a lot as far as ANY company promising online play, and am especially skeptical of those that promise a perfect one.

Long story short, people need to step back and realize that this was not going to be perfect straight from the box, and that nothing ever is. This game has insane amounts of content - go and enjoy that, and by the time you get through a good bit of it, I bet a good amount of these issues will be worked out.

PsionicMonkey

Nintendo could only get 3 games right when it came to online play. Mario Kart DS, Tetris DS, and Animal Crossing DS. Even with these games, the NintendoWFC website is still a broken mess, lag and disconnects are still a problem, and Nintendo has done nothing with their newer games to prove to me that they care about online gaming at all. I have yet to play an online Wii game (I have 3 of them) that actually let me play, smoothly, with another player. I was hoping to test out Brawl but obviously I've had nothing but disconnects.

Whatever. I expected this as soon as I saw the phrase "friend code" when the DS's online functionality was premiered. Nintendo can't do online. I'll stop expecting it to get any better now.

DaveKap

As for me, my friend matches work great, but I have yet to have an ounce of success on the "With Anyone" option. Guess all we can do is wait and hope?

It's too bad...the game itself is awesome, and something stupid that other companies implement rather easily is the only thing holding it back.

No, I'm not "overreacting" much at all. Why would you consider it overreacting? I paid $50 for this game to play it online. It doesn't work online. I think, if anything, I was restrained. But I should have known not to say anything wrong about the almighty Nintendo as they are constantly given a free pass. If this would have happened with Halo 3 on the 360 or Warhawk on the PS3 there would have been hell to pay. But Nintendo? Of course not. They're just taking baby steps -- give them time. Even though online gaming worked fine on the Sega Dreamcast a decade ago. Nintendo needs to catch up.

Sloopydrew

Nintendo is going to move fast as far as relieving the lag issues, but this is not a matter of turning on a bunch of servers and hitting interns with chairs to fix routing issues and seeing magical improvements. It will take, I would venture, a few weeks to iron out a great deal of the issues that plague ANY online game, including Brawl. The way it seems with some people who endlessly bitch and moan about playing a game online, for free or otherwise, and expect magic resulting fixes to materialize within the span of fifteen seconds is incredible to me. I'm no network engineer, but I have seen firsthand how that kind of thing works - it takes a lot of time, money, and manpower to expand capacity even a little bit.

Yes, the game is laggy at times and often in peak periods. But its not going to stay laggy in perpetuity. Thats clearly bad PR if it was, and something that will scare the hell out of Nintendo when they see its potential effects on their bottom line. They will fix it. There are metric tons of content to find on that game, and people shouldn't miss the forest for the trees, here.

PsionicMonkey

So far, the first thing I do when I turn on SSBB is to try to find a match online. When (if) that fails, then I go ahead and play the SSE and regular Brawl part of the game. If this does not get fixed soon, I will have finished those parts and then have no interest in playing the game again. I don't have people to play against at home so I need the online part to work.

I'm hoping Nintendo will take the oodles of money they have made and fix this problem.

thinkfreemind

i go back to school on sunday and its a pain to get consoles on the internet there. I want to get my online brawl fix before going back! Nintendo, stop kicking our asses with the online play already. You've gotta be raking in the cash by now, what with Wii's selling out fast and now you have a hugely popular game that everyone who owns a Wii will most likely be getting. You don't want to go into the serious online business until there is money involved? You sell a million copies of brawl at whatever price (50 dollars is the markup of the stores, so we could probably say around 25-35 dollar profit per game sold) that still amounts to 250-350 million dollars. I'm not sure how much it costs to maintain the online services, but its got to be somewhat offset from the profits coming from Brawl alone.
Nintendo, you have very selective hearing.

trogam

Or play local multiplayer, which allows you to trash talk proper-like.

However once Monday night and Tuesday rolled around... well then friend matches and random matches were just laggy to all hell. I kind of expected this. You can't really jump into something you have never really done without hitting some glitches. And if I remember Live had a few issues when first released. That being said though. I really hope Nintendo is working hard and fast on a fix because they will most definitely feel a huge backlash from gamers.

incazteca

On my first spectation I lost 15 coins! =D

DJ_Sessum

I've been trying for the past 2 hours and it sits there "registering opponents" for an eternity and then boots me with the connection to other players lost message. What a complete joke. As I bought this primarily for some online brawling, I'd expect that to work. Is Nintendo going to issue refunds as online play has been and remains a HUGE part of their marketing for this game?

Sloopydrew
