Leon Trotsky described Germany on the eve of the Nazi takeover this way:

"Not only in peasant homes, but also in skyscrapers, there lives alongside the 20th century the 13th. A hundred million people use electricity and still believe in the magic powers of signs and exorcisms... Movie stars go to mediums. Aviators who pilot miraculous mechanisms created by man's genius wear amulets on their sweaters. What inexhaustible reserves they possess of darkness, ignorance, and savagery."

I was immediately reminded of this quote when I read the "Haunted Ms. Pac-Man" article. We're here on kotaku.com, on the internet, one of the greatest technological innovations of all time, discussing games and amusements that our grandparents could have barely conceived of when they were our age, walking around with our iPhones and PSPs and Bluetooth receivers, and we're still stuck on the question of whether ghosts, demonic possession, etc., are real? It's unbelievable to me that superstition is still so prevalent, even in 2008.

texicali74

so, so very glad i didn't read this last night before going to bed.

i'm a taphophile.. i greatly enjoy visiting cemeteries. they can be beautiful, peaceful places. they can also be downright creepy. certain ones i've gone to were reputed to be haunted, but when i actively looked for ghosts, i never found one. but a couple years ago..

it was the end of a day of cemetery touring. i came upon this huge gnarled tree. the light was fading, so i took a pic with flash, saw something funny on the LCD screen.. so i took a pic immediately after that, with flash again. second pic turned out normal, but the first.. well, i've seen pics like it, but i've never had the privilege of getting such a shot. i'm certain i came away with a spirit. so certain, in fact, that i was afraid it would follow me home :) i thanked it for revealing itself for me.. for what purpose, i know not. for people like tsathoggua, i wasn't looking to capture any ghosts. it just.. happened. and so far, this is the only time it's ever happened to me...

geekgrrl

my mom used to tell us how, back when she lived at her parents house in mexico, she'd sometimes see an old elegant man, sitting in the drawing room. people believed he was the ghost of the houses old owner who'd died in the war. he would sometimes switch off the lights in order to scare my aunts or sit in the drawing room. they were all convinced he'd hid gold somewhere in the house... the gardener found it at some point near an old well, she told me. also, when she went to university one day, she'd left the front door open while eating breakfast (dunno why, maybe to ventilate?)and it would repeatedly shut itself. my mom would open it repeatedly (again, dunno why...) nad he wouldn't let her out, always closing the door. when her taxi cab arrived , the driver spoted a man hiden in the bushes, a burglar apparently... he obviously called the police.
now I take this with a grain of salt, because its obviously hard to believe, still its nice story I think :)

laencythe

@comedy: Ok i got one for you then......

My grandfather died about 6 years ago. At the time I was house sitting his home, as it was on the market to be sold and the family felt it best if someone stayed with it (that and it was near NCSU so.... Win win situation for me)....

1st lets do some back store about my granddad. He was a WW2 vet and enjoyed watching the history channel, often falling asleep with it on (I guess reliving the war). He didnt like to leave lights on and "waist electricity" and he frequently checked the door locks via jiggling the door handle.

Ok, let me say i sleep with a fan because i enjoy the noise it makes, kinda soothing to me. At this time I had a large fan that i put at the end of the hallway leading to the bedrooms from the den (1 story house with basement). About 1 month after my granddad died it started. I leave lights on because i dislike finding my way in the dark, so i always left a few lights on in the house to make it appear as if someone was home. AS you can guess when I would go out to the store and come back said lights would be off.

More over the tv was always on and i made it a point to turn it off. It would be on the history channel every time. I always left it on comedy central and USA network. I frequently would walk into the den in the mornings only to find that tv on.

You think thats good, it gets better. in said halway with the fan there are a few things worth noting. One is the door way to the basement, two the front door is off this hallway and three is the bathroom. My cousin came back from UNC Wilmington for spring break and he stayed at the house with me. He experienced one id never experienced. He was in the bathroom when he thought he heard Granddads voice coming from just out side the door. Said it was muffled and not understandable but was defiantly his voice. He then told me and i told him about numbers one and two.

Number One, happened to me one knight at about 11pm. (which coincidentally is when Granddad like to be in bed. He usally woke from his chair and checked the doors and then went to bed) At 11pm about once or twice a week, the front door knob would jiggle. The first time it happened i got my hand gun and started searching to see if someone was there. Nothing. No wind, no nothing. If that was the only door to jiggle in the house id wonder if it wasnt someone playing a joke. (though who would prank an old mans house) The other door that frequently jiggled was the basement door. Also in the hallway and similarly, no one was in the basement to jiggle it either.

Number Two and this is the fun one. At night as i lay in bed and listen to the fan... You can literally hear something move in front of it and walk down the hallway towards the bedroom. Upon checking you get nothing. No one is there. It was freaky but not freaky as it was a very familiar routine that i knew my grandfather did nightly.

As a final note. The house has been sold, no clue if the new owners have these problems. The tv moved with me to my apartment, It never turned on or switched channels by itself again. My cousin doesnt believe in ghost but still cant explain the bathroom incident. Ive done research and the form of haunting that best fits what i experienced is known as Residual. But agan my cousins experiance would be classified as intelligent and if it stopped after we moved out that would be different as well.

Believe it or dont, but i know what ive heard and experienced. I often want to drive to that house and ask the owners if they have experienced anything strange or not but you know how weird of a conversation that would be.....

ShaggyB

"One day a young friend of mine went into the house to explore, our babysitter, a Thai women, was beside herself with worry, telling him he would anger the spirits in the house. That night his father was killed in a car crash after veering off the road."

Oh man. Hopefully he doesn't think he somehow caused his dad's death.

As for those who have witnessed ghosts or still do, I suggest you consult a doctor. I'm not trying to be flippant or insulting. Serious mental health issues such as schizophrenia (of which more than one in a hundred people suffer) can lead to halucinations (sometimes even shared by other people, look up Shared Psychotic Disorder) like the ones some of you have described. If you think you're possessed, or that a friend of yours is possessed, or that the house you live in is haunted, get help. And I don't mean a priest.

L_K_M

@Byakko: At least its still on topic though!

Yeah I do agree with the whole thing about "Asian ghosts are alternatively more benign than Western ghosts, but have a greater capacity for viciousness if that's their nature."

My friends mother kinda told me more about the western side of things which seems a lot less scary than the shit that goes on with the eastern part of things.

Also with Hawaii Polynesian spirits / ghost and such seem to be on the ball with the eastern types in terms of how incidents and such go down.

If theres one thing Ive learned from the 2 different cultures is to basically really respect the dead. Since there can be asskickings from beyond the grave as far as Im concerned. :x

While granted ghosts may not be what most people make of it or the movies and such, there is totally something that exists beyond our normal knowledge and personally it shouldnt be screwed with.

Witzbold

Heh, on the night my grandfather died, he was heard talking and wandering about the house. My mother said she could hear his footsteps and his voice and smell him as well.

I saw one of my uncle's employees possessed while at the job site canteen about 10 years ago. He started talking in accentless Mandarin (he was a Malay) and in a woman's voice.

The spirit or whatever it was demanded an offering at one of the small shrines up a hill a little past the job site because she claimed that they had disturbed it. Then she stabbed an orange and ate it without peeling it.

Then my mother pushed me behind the canteen counter presumably so that I wouldn't be traumatised or something. Yup, that totally worked.

Fishballs

http://kotaku.com/366465/on-ghosts-and-how-they-creep-me-out#c4654045

Asian ghosts are alternatively more benign than Western ghosts, but have a greater capacity for viciousness if that's their nature.

My closest ghost experience was through my mother's tale of my grandma returning in the last week of her funeral rites. This is actually natural as the final farewell, and she left her mark (a depressed footprint) in her favourite cake which they had baked for her and left in the oven overnight.

However, it should be noted that it was unfortunately my mother who may have caused my grandma's death. It was an accident, because my grandma was epileptic, and my mom was quite young and didn't know what to do. She tried to give her water and she choked to death.

Left in her coffin, my mom tried to put the coin into grandma's mouth that would have paid for her passage through the underworld. Her mouth wouldn't open, no matter how she pleaded. Her jaw just wouldn't open.

Eventually, another sister took over, and her jaw slipped open easily.

My house is 'clean', and so's the area around it, so I don't have much supernatural encounters. My father's a devout Tibetan Buddhist, and the sheer presence of his prayer room and annual blessings and visits by various Tibetan monks from afar (my dad is a liason between Singapore and Tibet in this way. You can prolly Google for him), keeps the house and area 'clean'.

However, animals tend to arrive at our house to die. Which isn't pretty.

Another link to the supernatural is me. I'm not making this point up that since I was very young, I had this 'game' where I climbed up on the marble table in our garden and yell into the wind. Every time I did this, even on a very still day, I would get a response with a strong gust of wind blowing back at me. At that point, and some years after that, I didn't think much of it, and I stopped doing it when I was 12.

When I was 16, I went to China on an exchange trip. Between two buildings on a flat plain, there was a very powerful and constant breeze, which me and my classmates were enjoying.

For no real reason, I started playing with the wind, so to speak. I gave it simple directions. 'Higher' and 'lower', referring to how much force it should blow at me. I did this for five minutes straight and the wind did everything I told it to. At one point, I told it to go almost down to zero level of breeze, which my friend noticed, and commented that the wind was really following my commands.

If you're going to ask me whether I can do it still. I'm honestly not sure. I'm still figuring all this time it was a coincidence, and I don't have any 'power'. Maybe an empathy and a knack for judging the direction of wind, but not really a commanding power.

For one, the wind doesn't always follow my commands anymore, at least not in Singapore. I can think of it personified, Chinese culture DOES have a Guardian of the Wind which is the White Tiger. The White Tiger itself is my own patron saint, so maybe that's the reason, but not likely. Personally, I think it's pissed off with me for abandoning it when I was small, and calling it up for no real reason, heh.

Byakko

...the main reason people refuse to believe in anything other than what they can see and touch and read in their high school textbooks is simply because it's uncomfortable...

if human beings truly DO have a spiritual aspect to their being, surely it could not be something we simply evolved...does that mean a God must exist?

Well i can´t blame ppl for not believing, it is something that you can´t really explain to someone else, you need to experience it.
Believe me i am very down to earth kind of person, i always look for a logical explanation for everything and most "ghost" stuff you hear is absolute bs too.

Sometimes in life you witness things that make you doubt, you try to resist and deny everything with a supposed logical explanation, but its just not possible.

I have witnessed too much to remain in complete denial, i do believe there is something more, i just can´t really give a form, shape or a logical explanation.

Its not about ghosts and haunted houses, its something else, its the kind of feeling you get when you start thinking about how the universe was formed. How did the first atom appear, how did the first particle of matter appear, is it just a fact that it exists, period? weird :p

Oh, i hate all religions btw, i think they are the root of all evil and they can bring out the worst in all mankind, blindly following a book (they all have a book) that some dude wrote years ago is idiotic at best.
Imagine that the Lord of the Rings was writen 3000 years ago, we wold probably have some kind of religion believing we fought orcs and dragons, that elves lived in the forests and could do magic...

Krumm

Ghosts, regardless of if you believe in them, are a pretty fascinating topic. I've been really into them since I was a little kid, though I haven't personally ever seen one. I worked as a DJ at a radio station during the weekend night shift throughout high school and I swear the station must have been haunted in some way. Things would go missing all of the time and there were always really strong scents in the air (like perfume, etc.) when nobody else was in the station with me. Creepy, yes.

I did a feature for my newspaper this past Halloween about ghosts and various haunted areas in the Cincinnati region, as well. I was all set to go on a ghost hunt with a group of supposed "hunters," when the person asking for the investigation pulled out at the last minute. My girlfriend was of course delighted that I was not going to be bringing any sort of energies home with me, but I'm still kind of sad I missed out on that opportunity. Maybe next year!

Goataroo

Several years later (fourth, maybe fifth grade) I woke up and needed to use the bathroom. I didn't bother turning on any lights, but I glanced up as I passed the bathroom sink and there, clear as day, was my father standing behind me.

Scared the crap out of me, so I screamed. The image in the mirror immediately vanished and the room was filled with what I can best describe as an emotional vapor...it wasn't visible either but it was clearly palpable, an almost physical message of sorrow that he had frightened me. I immediately started crying and wishing that he would come back, that it was okay, but it never happened again.

Islandkiwi

@NINJADEATH: believe... in evolution? ok, now i know it's rather a pedantic standpoint but i'm a little worried about the american education system. (i apologise if you're not american, but you've somehow managed to pick up on one of their major issues). effectively there is some sort of problem with teaching evolution as fact, instead it's referred to as theory... the question is, if something is quite clearly there, do you really need to question it's truth?
if i stand in front of a tree and it's obviously there i don't need to 'theorise' that there's a tree... there IS a tree.
basically evolution is as true as the sky is blue, as water is wet, or as the sun shines... it's truth.
maybe you just chose those words because they were convenient, but i have to say this kind of stuff when i think there might be some doubt.

i used to shy away from theological debate, but frankly i'm getting sick and tired of people blindly dismissing the truth just because they want to.

comedy

Really does science know everything now whose to say that years from now science doesnt develop technologies that can sense things we interpret as ghost be them that or not. Whose to say there are not places that certain energies that are visible even if to a few people under ideal circumstances or even if it is a product of imagination stimulated by outside elements(more than just being spooky).

why must it be so common to get haunting in deserted buildings? why in the dark? what does geography have to do with it?

I'd like to throw my two cents in, if I may:

I never believed in ghosts either, until about ten years ago. I dated a girl who had graduated from Syracuse and moved back home with her family (Williams Twp, PA--look it up, it's known for it's creepyness) and she and her family swore up and down they had a ghost in the house. Over the next two years, I saw a man standing in the garage late at night, another night I woke up at 4am to find the man standing beside the bed looking at me, and one night after dinner while I was washing some dishes, I saw an arm reach around me and turn the faucet off. When I spun around, there was no one there. My favorite story, however, happened one Saturday morning. My GF was taking a shower upstairs and I was downstairs reading the paper when I heard her scream for me. I ran upstairs and opened the door and written on the fog in the mirror was the alphabet from A to Z, perfectly spaced so it fit from one end to the other. She said she saw a hand ruffling the shower curtain and thought it was me so she peeked her head out and saw the letters. Shortly after that we did some research on their property and discovered there was a schoolhouse there in the late 1800s/early 1900s.

Now that my heart rate has paced itself once again, I can't stop asking myself this one question: Why is there a Wellington boot anywhere near my door anyway?

Draig

Another hard to belive but intriguing thing we have here in Newfoundland is fairies but these aren't you're average Tinkerbell pansy ass fairies these fairies are manly bearded fairies badass gnomes more or less, apparently they steal children and turn them into fairies if you travel into the forest alone and break a bunch of rules: like dont wear green and dont join the fairy circle and other things like that and if you are captured but escape when you return you will still be the same age but years could have passed and other messed up things like that. And at the end of it, if you said, I still don't believe in ghosts, I wouldn't even disagree with you, because I'm the same way. As a matter of fact, I'm still skeptical about other ghost stories I hear, even more so now, because they don't have the detail I do.

At the end of the day, if you don't experience it, it's just too damn hard to believe. Just a funny factoid, the Whaley House in our hometown is the first house in the US to be deemed "haunted" and #1 haunted house according to Travel Channel. Funny stuff.

dangj307

I don't believe in ghosts.
Simply put, there's no scientific proof of it. It's all hear-say and the rumor mill.

If I ever hear a story of somebody actually accurately, and consistently being able to detect spirits, and in a way that is quantifiable measurable, then I'll believe it.

Part of my problem is that all ghosts also fall into stereotypes of ghosts. If you hear a ghost story, ten bucks says it'll be a woman. Another ten says it'll be either a very young or very young woman. I'll lose a couple of those bets, but I'll still come out ahead at least 4:1.

Kirbytheslayer: In-Kirby XMB

the one thing i find wierd and spooky about ghosts is that so many people are convinced they exist... they're like the embodiment of our insecurity - when all is quiet and there's very little going on to notice, why is it our minds trick us into thinking there's some malevolent force taunting us, cursing us and causing general mischief...
that's what is creepy about ghosts, so few people can be really at peace given the chance.

comedy

I don't expect anyone to believe my story, but apparently my sister was possessed for a short while. It's a long long story but I witnessed dozens of weird occurrences with her. 10 times out of 10 when someone tells me a ghost story even I don't believe it, and I don't expect people to believe me. I tell the story, but don't try to convince anyone of it's veracity. The only saving "grace" is the fact that most of my friends also witnessed a couple of episodes themselves (she was dating one of my buddies) therefore they end up vouching for the story.

This was like 15 years ago. We don't even talk about it anymore.

dangj307
