Mostly agree. I've always looked at the friend codes as a necessary evil and I still do. Adventure mode: the levels are really nicely paced and sized but I have much more of a problem with how co-op is implemented. Overall I've only really played the main quest and I can say that I'm absolutely having a blast.

Cerif27

Anyway, you forgot one CON, the ability not to play the user created levels online. That kinda sucks but maybe we will be able to in a future update, MAYBE!!!!

finally played a random online bout last night and it was kinda laggy but not horribly so.

I love how everything is so balanced now! No more stupid tier systems and certain characters being overly powerful than others. Most notably, Sheik's forward A swipe barely hits them far even at a higher %.

I also like how you need to get your opponent to an upwards of at least 120%+ to successfully smash them off of the stage...unless you get hit by a pesky smart bomb lol.

ddrmacintosh

totally agree with all the points.

Subspace Emissary disappointed me immensely. The first half was alright, but then afterwards it just kept getting more and more repetitive and eventually felt like a chore getting through those levels. And the Subspace maze that pretty much is the last 20% of the game is a total nightmare of backtracking.

Sandbox_Emperor

@vibe: Agree

Feels much slower, has nothing to do with Wavedash... Is the Japanese release faster??? From what gameplay I have been watching up till the US release it appears that way...Also some jump height is not in proper proportions to the "Gravity / Heaviness" of the character.

Like most of the things incorporated in gameplay. Stage Editor will always keep things interesting. Like the new Items/Smashes/Pokemon/Assist Trophies(pokemon...)

Wish you could flip some peices in the editor vertically or horizontally... Would like to have spiked ceilings. I have only unlocked the first set of pieces getting close to 10. I hope that is one of the additions.

Would like to have the ability to use snapshots in game as backgrounds and or pictures from the SD card.

Danjaranja

Marth and Roy had mostly all the same animations in Melee, with different damage properties, but Ike is a completely different beast. They both carry a sword and that's about where the similarities end.

Same goes for Ness and Lucas. They're both little boys with "PK" type attacks, and the same mode of recovery, but almost every other attack has significantly different properties and animations. It's still 10x a bigger difference b/w them, when compared to the brawl clones: mario/doc, marth/roy, pi(ka)chu, c-falc/ganon

teh_sideburns

just unlocked sonic this afternoon (by beating Classic Mode w/ 10 diff characters) and he is my fav so far. marth and pika were my mains in Melee but i think Sonic just won my heart with his crazy speed and nostalgia-inducing spinny sounds.

and his final smash is just too fun. especially when it goes away and you're left to fall helplessly to your demise.

i dabbled in the melee tournament scene and learned all the advanced techniques, and it's taken some getting used to, not wavedashing or l-canceling or crouch-canceling runs into c-smashes. but i love the new game, and i've vowed not to get "serious" about it for at least a year. i want my friends to enjoy playing me again =)

teh_sideburns

@Garcia: Yeah, "People" will create good stuff with the level editor, of that there is no doubt. I think we were all just hoping it would be a little more intuitive so that we could use it for ourselves (those with lesser talent for such things) without too much trouble, again I hold out hope somebody with programming skills will step forward to crack open the map format and build a PC/Mac/Linux editor that lets us do it on computer, would be much easier if you could draw/proof maps in other programs the way I usually try to do with other games on Mac/PC, again usually just for my own use rather than to share.

@KM91: Hell, its even easier than that, pop open WordPad, NotePad, Stickies, Textedit, Word, whatever you use for text on your computer and just make a master FC file, add Kotaku/whatever nicks next to each code.

I don't miss the random "friends" I pick up in Halo/XBL in general, half of whom stop playing the game within a month of becoming my friend or start sending me "game spam", by which I mean invites to crazy custom games sent to their whole friends list, until I delete them. I prefer the online company of real friends and those I meet through places like Kotaku.

I love the effort nintendo spent on making the game feel balanced and great. Everything seems so polished... that is until you get to Online and Adventure mode. The best part of adventure mode was finishing it and knowing you never ever have to go through it again (to get the characters at least). I wonder who the idiot at nintendo is that designed this online service. Why only give us 4 simple chat commands when people have to go through some NORAD style defense system (typing in Wii and Brawl friend codes)?

Ramza

Ike -> Marth (sorta expected)

Now the next one we unlocked was Snake and he definitely has a unique set of moves and tricks, much love for the remote-detonator mine :)

However I, sort of expected Marth, Nes and Falco being unlocks from the original to be starters and Lucas and Ike are frankly carbon copies. I'm sure each has one slightly different move or Super Smash but their similarities make them less appealing as unlocks.

In the previous eddtion Marth and Nes (and IIRC none of the unlocks) shared move sets so closely (exactly?) with already playable characters so they added more than a new look to the available characters.

Gwydeon

I agree about the adventure mode. Great cutscenes, gameplay actually not all that fun.

Friend codes wouldnt be such an issue if random matches werent so limited. At the very least there should be the option to turn items and time limit on/off.

What i do really like though is the spectator betting gimmick. It seems so pointless until you start losing big money on that idiot snake player who keeps hiding in his box. I found myself getting genuinely interested in these matches and even yelled at the tv a couple times. Also noticed myself getting caught up in that "just one more bet" mentality to try to win my coins back... very addicting.

Btw, anyone know what the bonus chance when you're betting does? Doesnt seem to payout any bigger...

Thrillhaus

I think SSE is pretty well designed and fun, of course I wasnt expecting too much out of it seeing as smash isnt a platforming game. I think the game is great for newcomers but i found it hard to get used to the new physics of the characters and the buffing/nerfing of characters from melee. I'm sure that somebody out there on Kotaku knows somebody that wants a Wii and doesn't yet have one, and yours is obviously in fine shape since you never play it.

The fact is, most Smash players see online multiplayer as a happy perk, not something that is vital to their enjoyment of the game. Same with almost every other Nintendo franchise. Given that, why should Nintendo blow a bunch of time and money competing with MS and Sony at a game their core audience either doesn't care about or already has 360/PS3/PC to fill their need for?

DaiMacculate

Thanks kiden, I guess I have a lot of levels to replay.

I like playing the subspace and fighting the enemies (rather than just running through) becuase it forces you to play with some characters you wouldn't normally and gets you used to them - maybe even find a new favorite (I never liked yoshi before and now I play yoshi a lot - except it really sucks when you screw up and roll in an egg right off the side - there isn't enough time to cancel from egg mode and jump to make it back on).

Hmmm some characters still seem fast (I like Shiek personally if you wanna talk fast players). But then I haven't played Melee for years and never really got into melee so I could be totally off.

oh did I say friday? - that couldn't be right!?! LOL don't worry its 100% legit - its
called "friends and family".

Ice climbers are my favorite - its fun to beat on people with cute and cuddly ice climbers.

Has ANYONE had success with Olimar? I had a party and we played 4 player brawl for hours and I don't think even the best player of the group was able to win with Olimar. Hes a very cool character just really weak - hopefully everyone was just not playing him correctly. I think of all the characters I had at the time of the party Pit seemed to win the most.

MysteryMachine

@wheezo: Batallion Wars, probably. Ouendan (Elite Beat Agents) was developed by INIS and published by Nintendo. Not sure if Nintendo owns the rights to the characters. I heard there are Ouendan stickers in smash; if so, that suggests they do. Are we counting new Monolith Soft stuff, since Nintendo owns them now? If so, Soma Bringer would count (plus Disaster: Day of Crisis soon). Also, the Fire Emblem and Famicom/Advance Wars franchises embody gameplay traits, not characters (although they'll sometimes keep a set around for a second game).

Torgen got his apology faceplate but not his fixed GH3 disc

I have one outstanding issue with this game, and it's this. I'm not going to lie, I'm a pretty damn good Melee player, but when I started playing Brawl, everything felt incredibly slow. It's not just because they removed wavedashing; jumps are floatier, dashes are slower, even attacks seem slower. There aren't any really fast characters anymore, even Fox seems like he's wearing cement shoes. This hasn't ruined the game for me, I still like it and imagine that I'll be playing it for years to come. I just feel a bit betrayed that Nintendo has tried to accomodate new players by slowing down the game.

The developers were obviously trying to balance the game, and, unfortunately, they succeeded.

Maybe I just haven't quite gotten used to it yet. I don't know. But one thing I do know is that I won't be playing it at all for another effing week because, apparently, my Wii has contracted cancer. Stupid disc read errors!

vibe

First, I love the single player emissary mode. its fun and you get to use all the players. i would have actually hoped for a longer adventure. 10 hours isnt enough.

Second im not sure what people are saying when they say the level creator needs to be more user friendly. You select a piece, and then place it on the board. As you build more stages more pieces become available to you. its super simple. I haven't unlocked everything yet but i am seriously hoping they include mario bricks and backgrounds. i've made about 5 so far and i am loving it.

haven't tried online yet. i'll check it out tonight

justaj

@MysteryMachine: Crown means you beat the level entirely (all the items, trophies, etc.).

As for my impressions, the adventure mode was mediocre from a gameplay perspective. All I did was run through the stages fighting only when I had to (about 30% of the time). That said the cutscenes are amazing. It's worth playing through campaign just for the cutscenes (falco's intro ftw).

Multiplayer-wise, I'm a bit disappointed. Casual to Regular gamers probably won't notice or care for that matter, but the game slowed down a LOT. All advanced techniques are gone and combos don't exist. All attacks knock back the opponent so much that its impossible to follow up with anything (please don't show me any combo vids, I've seen all of Brawl's combo vids and those aren't combos, a decent player could escape all of them with DI and dodging). O and throws are useless, they don't kill, do much damage, or lead into any attacks.

I'm not saying Brawl isn't fun, I'm just saying the "fighter" aspect of Smash was dumbed down a lot in Brawl.

Kiden4911

Been playing off and on since Friday - went through the subspace adventure thing and the classic mode already - anyone know why some levels when you beat have a green flag others get some kinda crown? Is one when you find all the secrets of the level or something? (cause I beat subspace and only had 87% so obviously missed a lot of stuff)

The co-op on the subspace adventure is great: I can be playing it single and a friend can drop in at anytime without starting a new save or exiting the level (except they can't drop out).

The "bosses" in the subspace adventure mode seemed really inconsistant on the difficulty (I played on easy first, since you unlock different things at different difficulty might as well start with easy). Some were too simple, a few were pretty hard for playing on easy.

But WTF about not allowing us using wiimote drag and drop for level creator?!?!? (or is there some way to do that which I am not seeing?) That and the friend codes are the worst. Its bad enough registering your friends once on the wii but then again inside SSBB? Seriously...

MysteryMachine

I really don't understand why, with all the configuration and button mapping options you have in the game, Nintendo didn't allow people using just wiimote or wiimote and nunchuck options to map waggle or controller shake in place of a button press. Might sound awkward but, for example, it would be much easier to shake for shield in wiimote only mode rather than reach for the b trigger. It couldn't have been terribly hard to program something like that in. Only accpet "1 motion = " option and your done, so no worrying about motion recognition, etc. Also there should be IR control for the freaking menus and definitely the stage builder if you want it. Especially the stage builder.

ajay42

Hey everybody, just got back from picking up my pre-order! The status of my adventure? I still don't possess the game. Technically, I own it, because the store still has my 50 dollars plus tax, but after playing the demo unit they had set up in the store, I decided that I'm still undecided as to whether I even want the game.

A little background into my experience at the kiosk: only control choice was the Wii remote w/ Nunchuck, and it was so unbearably awkward that I couldn't keep up with the level the game chose for me. Can't remember the name of the level, but it starts on an airship and the screen automatically scrolls so you have can't stan in one place for long or the screen makes whatever your standing on disappear and then you fall and die. So, coupled the awkward controls with a level that won't let you stay still, and I couldn't do anything properly and had absolutely zero fun doing it. And finally, the CPU character I was fighting against didn't do a damn thing except the bare minimum of jumping in order to not be caught standing on a platform that would eventually disappear off the screen. It didn't attack me at all.

Everything about it seemed awkward, so I decided not to buy it and come to the trusty internet and ask around and see if playing it with the Classic controller is as awkward, and whether or not the majority of the levels are as annoying as that one, what with the automatic scrolling and so forth.

And another thing: I was never a big fan of the earlier games in the series. I did enjoy them marginally, but only when I had 3 friends to play against, and ony then if it was the only game that all 3 of them agreed we should play, otherwise I have more fun playing other multiplayer games.

So, yeah, does this game sound like something I should go ahead and pick up or did I make the right decision by leaving my pre-order copy in the store?

baked ham

@moviebob:
Metal Gear started on MSX, not NES. Nes games were ports, and not the best ones either. That's what makes me wonder why he's there. If you're going to choose only 2 non-Nintendo characters, there are more obvious choices than Snake I'd say. I know why Capcom isn't represented but that would make much more sense. Again, it's nice he's there and he is part of Nintendo history but there are characters that would be more suitable.

TrekVogel

I'm not going to argue with anything you said, definitly have to agree with the controls. It is sad (to me) that the game that will most likely be the best selling for the consoles life is one that feels like crap when playing with the systems own controllers.

As my own opinion I think the character balancing was fairly poor. The super moves are emberrasingly over powered for some, while others can end up doing nothing when they ARE successful (see Kirby's pot)

Evil_Snow_Man

I have to admit that I resisted Melee back in the GC days. I just never felt like I "got" what Smash Bros. was all about. However, I did pre-order the Wii title given all the hype, as well as a Best Buy gift card for my b-day.

I'm very impressed with the game so far, and mostly because of the terrific co-op and multiplayer. My wife can play right along with me, even though she has no fighting game experience. It's the element of luck in Smash Bros. that makes it so addictive and more of a party game offering that involves a really meaty experience.

Benjo

I have to call you out on the Wii controls bit, I haven't tried them all but the Wiimote only controls work very well. Thing is, after playing Melee for years with one type of controller(that uses an analog stick even)it felt wierd for like 5 minutes and to my complete surprise it worked very well in then end. But I stuck to my gamecube controller as it was instantly familiar also it better for me since I never liked pressing up to jump. I hated it in Melee and I still do thank goodness brawl let me turn that off. Dammit I hate pressing up to jump in alot of fighters which is practically every 2-d fighter ever, and I love 2-d fighters.

jive238

Actually, I do have a semi-valid complaint (to me) about the controls. You could always use the D-pad instead of the analog stick for movement in the other games. In this one you can't, except for when you use the wiimote, but in that configuration you're forced to use up as the jump button rather than a dedicated jump button. Digital control and a separate jump button where my personal preference and I can't use that anymore. That being said, I'm enjoying the game very much.

Mommar

Most of the hate was dumb. The Wiichuk works perfect. I think the only people whining about it are people who up until yesterday played Melee non stop. Some of us don't have a million friends to constantly play games with. I tried playing Melee again a few months ago and couldn't because of the bizarre controls. You had to get used to the first two Smash games, but anyone who has never played them or simply become detached from the controls can easily get into the game with no sacrifices by using the Wiimote/Nunchuk.

@TRT-X: I disagree with that assessment. Nintendo should have been prepared when they knew how popular SSB is in general. That's inexcusable. What bothers me about this is Sony managed to give gamers online gaming that works. Not as well as Live mind you, but PSN provides online gaming that works. Nintendo Wifi failed on the day of the debut of its biggest supported title. I had 2 TWO matches that ran lag free out of ten and got booted out of Nintendo Wifi at least 5 times.

Terrible

Terrible

Terrible

Requiring FCs for each online game is bad enough especially when Nintendo said that this wouldn't be the case but it's infuriates me that they require TWO sets of FCs to fully enjoy the game with friends. Otherwise you can't send photos (which are surprising awesome) and videos to your friends. I love the game...I really do...but I shake my head at the bone-headed, dumbass mistakes that didn't have to be.
SSBB should have had leaderboards...it should have voice chat...it should have a friend's list that is tied to the friends you already have on your Wii...it should have had dedicated servers that prevented the debacle that was online play last night...

I just hope Nintendo fixes this mess quick (at least the online portion...or it's only going to get worse as more people try to play online. I still can't understand why Nintendo would provide parental controls and still gimp the online experience of Nintendo Wifi.

@valhum: I think that SSBB takes a longer period of time to start understanding the underlying mechanics. At the beginning, it seemed all but inconceivable that this game wasn't just a button mashing fest. Defense in SSBB, for instance, is quite complicated, and easy for a noob to miss out on all together (I still haven't figured it out well enough to use). I think with a few more hours, when I graduate from "sucks a lot" to "doesn't ALWAYS suck", the game will grow in its appeal, and that'll definitely keep me playing.

ludwigk

@Neo_Deus: Definitely agree with your point on the controls. As someone who's played about an hour total of the previous smash games I just went with the wiimote/nunchuk control scheme right off the bat and I really like it, I can understand the major change in thinking if you're coming from previous games but being able to move your arms independently while playing makes things more comfortable.
I haven't put too much time into it yet and haven't been able to try out the online play yet but so far the game is a blast. Agree on the story mode. Pretty meh. I really like how you can just play multiplayer matches and are still able to unlock characters.
Stages are really impressive though at times, baffling. My first time on the F-Zero track I fell off multiple times because the track had morphed and I hadn't noticed various gaps that had formed.

LX

I've just started playing SSBB, and I'm new to the series, but The Subspace Emissary mode IMO has two major flaws:

1) Camera focus is always on player 1. This especially doesn't make sense since the game already has lots of action scaling built into the regular game play. This leads to lots of life-loss/accidental deaths for the tag-along member. It is also *somewhat* kludgily made up for by the 'teleport to player 1' effect that sometimes triggers, seemingly randomly.

2) Sometimes falling will kill you, sometimes you are supposed to travel downwards, sometimes its a mix of both. SSBB and its brethren are built around the paradigm of falling down = death. Mixing this with triggered event driven down-scrolling level play is very awkward and unintuitive gameplay. I would say it is surprisingly unintuitive for a game that nintendo puts its name on.

Still, having a lot of fun with it, learning to play the various coop modes w/ my GF.

ludwigk

Plus a Wiimote/Chuk and a second Wiimote (thanks Wii Play) and I'm set for four player with a trio of control options.

TRT-X

I am going to disagree with Fahey here and encourage (that is, strongly encourage) everyone to try to play the game with the Wiimote/Nunchuk combo, at least for a few of the many hours you'll spend on the game. Yes, it's somewhat odd at first (and tripped me up during the Gamestop tournament) but it's just a matter of readjusting what you know. Personally, I feel one of the Wii's best features is that ability to play without having your hands needing to be side by side, but rather in whatever position is most comfortable for you. The longer you play, the more you notice this (in your back, shoulders, etc.) and so the Wiimote/nunchuk has an advantage here, I believe.

Additionally, there is a bit more versatility you get from the combo controls, not the least of which being able to transfer your player name (if you're into that) into it for when you play at a friend's house.

If you're a tournament player, stick with the Gamecube controller, since you've practiced for years using it and wilt at the thought of using anything else. If, however, you want a fresh experience, spend at least three hours with the Wiimote/nunchuk controls. I think you'll find yourself pleasantly surprised.

Neo Deus

I'd rather pay for Wii net if it had the games and lag-almost-free service that XBL has in Halo and COD.

diablodevil2

I haven't played on line yet, so I don't know about the lag, but the "Hated" section seems a little misleading. If you have been playing games with the remote and nunchuck, it's pretty easy to pick up. Even after my first match in the Game Stop tournament, I had the (Wiimote & Nunchuck) controls down and it felt quite natural. The controls in Subspace Emissary is also pretty intuitive (excpet for wall jump/cling which can be very frustrating). If you don't play Wii a lot (like my wife and friends), it can take some time to learn, which is why it is a good idea to have some GC or WaveBirds available. Friend codes? Ugh 'nuff said.

danbellinger1

I've said this before. Brawl is laggy...not just laggy.

LAGtastic

LAGalisious

LAGGED the hell out

Online...Brawl has been a pathetic experience. But here's where it gets even WORSE. If you want to share content from the game, not only does your friend have to have your Wii FC they have to have your Brawl FC too. I've only had two matches that were lag free out of 10 and then I got
